    A lot of speculation from people that haven’t seen it. I too speculated, I’ve seen W 3 times on stage and loved it. I did the movie mostly for my spouse. Coming into it, I feared an overly long, mis cast, preachy, woke, mess, led by a wooden Glinda with great pipes, a “trying too hard” Elphaba, an annoying wizard, a visual cluster and a decent supporting cast. I only had faith in Dinklage as perfect for his role. I was WRONG. This film was fantastic! The leads were amazing. Visuals, amazing. Supporting cast, amazing. Direction, songs, visuals, amazing. I never squirmed or zoned out, it was constantly engaging but didn’t need a physical rest and recovery period, like, say, “Fury Road.” I never sensed the time. My only fear, is the fun of Part 1 giving way to the seriousness and darkness that I again, speculate will color Part 2, but I’ll be there, I wouldn’t miss it after being surprisingly impressed and won over by Part 1.

    The main factor in this is the director John M Chu. He directed Crazy Rich Asians and Into the Heights. This is a man who knows how to envision movie musical sensibilities and he is a master - not an apprentice at this work. It's fun to talk. But the bottom line is: this project is in hands that are more than capable and creative. It will fulfill then go beyond anything we can imagine, beginning with the cast he has chosen and entrusted to transferbthis work to film an bring it to life.

    There's "over-long" and then there's stretching a 90-minute Act 1 into a 2 hour 40 minute movie. Having Wicked be split into two parts (and not putting "Part One" on the poster) is a cash-grab and nothing more. I very much fear Part One is going to be extremely bloated with lots of shots of pretty sets and pretty actors because that's where all the money went, and not enough happening to justify that runtime.

      If some of you guys would just think a little bit you would figure out by yourselves that musical theatre is NOT the same as movies in terms of acting and the way scenes play out. Movies need more depth and longer scenes to carry out the story so it makes sense and doesn’t feel rushed. Plus, they didn’t call it “Part 1” because, marketing, as movies do to give their movie their best shot possible and also because John M. Chu has said that Wicked can definitely be a standalone film. It can stand on its own two feet and has a satisfying ending on its own. Therefore, you could be satisfied without watching the next one. Also, early reviews and die-hard Wicked fanatics that were invited to the early premieres have come out to say that they totally understand why it needed a Part 2 and how once people watch it they will understand. 🙃

    This review sounds like a paid advertisement. It doesn’t mention what I have seen in clips, that Ariana overacts in many scenes where she has to show surprise or some other basic emotion. They are beginner acting school quality. In fairness she is effective in an ended where she sings and doesn’t need to stretch acting skills. I can’t find any fault in Cynthia Erivo’s performance, either acting or singing. Perfect casting there.

      Just watched it yesterday and I thought Ariana stole the show. Yes, she overacts, but her character is super extra and it's a musical, so it feels right for this context. She's very very funny while also being pretty sympathetic throughout. Her big expressions and even bigger gestures steal most scenes IMO.

      What do you mean? This movie is gonna fill in the gaps of the Broadway show and expand some plot elements. There is no way for anybody to make a single film of Wicked without the need of cutting songs, which is just impossible, given each song is important to the overall plot of the show. They are doing it right. I’m not surprised at all that it’s as long as it is, it’s full of possibilities, and a whole world of Oz to play with.
      I hope this helps, with understanding why they’re doing Wicked the way that they are.😀

      I've never seen _Wicked_ live, but I'd read the source book and have been watching bootlegs of the show. I was surprised how quickly the musical jumped from one plot point to the next. Whether a Playbill for the show explains how much time elapses between scenes or not, it wasn't easy to discern without one. I think splitting it will allow them to fill it out just a bit more and allow us to get to know each of the major characters beyond them walking into a scene and having a handful of lines. I'd think they'd be more concerned about the second film, which is much darker. By then, we'll be emotionally invested and the tragic fates many of them suffer.
      For one example, I want to see how Nessarose becomes the Wicked Witch of the East rather than sit through a brief scene that shows how manipulative she is with Boq. Considering hers is the root of the silver shoes/ruby slippers storyline, she deserves more. The second act tends to sacrifice this in a hurry to tie everything into _The Wizard of Oz._
      But above all, I HATE the ending. That's the big flaw, in my opinion.

      @boring_cheese What was the longest running, most popular musical in Broadway history? Since you don't know, I'll tell you. It's "Phantom Of The Opera". Now, beyond "Music Of The Night" (if you even know the song), name a single song from the musical. Now name a single line from that musical that has become part of American culture. From "The Wizard Of Oz" I can name one song that is considered one of the greatest of all time, four or five others that are part of American culture, and at least 20 phrases or lines that are also an integral part of American and international culture... and that after 85 years. Now, name one song from "Wicked" that is considered one of the greatest songs of all time, 4 songs that have become easily recognizable by most Americans, and 20 lines or phrases, or even one phrase as recognizable as "I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" or "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" that comes from "Wicked". I'll wait, though I know I'll be waiting forever. I stand by my statements that like the movies for "Hair", "Phantom Of The Opera", "A Chorus Line", "Rent", "Cats", "In The Heights", "Annie", "Jersey Boys", and 100 others, no one in 85 years will care or remember this "Wicked" movie version.

    I love how the “cracks in the façade” are minor. There are some major cracks, and it started with the actresses during promotion. I love how you conveniently forgot to mention Cynthia’s outrage over fan excitement and their edited movie poster.
    This film had the potential to be incredible because they had an incredible base of source material to start with. Splitting the movie, turning Oz into queer nation, alienating fans of the musical… they’ve ruined the chances of this being great. It will be okay and it might not be a loss, but it won’t be the blockbuster it could have been.

    • @g_wylde

      So the major crack in the movie is something that happened in social media and not in the movie at all? Does everyone who watches Wicked need to be terminally online to know and care about that movie poster spat and allow that to overshadow their enjoyment of the movie itself?? Also Idk what world you're in where musical theatre hasn't always been "queer nation", but here on planet Earth it has always been the case and no one is surprised.

    • @whitneylivingston5706
      @whitneylivingston5706 Месяц назад

      @ my problem is that with all the promotional faux pas they had, I’m afraid that when I look at the screen I’ll see Cynthia and my frustration with those faux pas will get in the way of enjoying the show. She made sure to use the words “I” and “Me” when referring to Elphaba, so I see her version of Elphaba and I’ll see what she wanted us to see which is Cynthia. There are also many people who don’t appreciate being told what to think or how to interpret something. If they had kept their mouth shut and kept their opinions and interpretations to themselves, then the audience would have been free to interpret Oz in their own way. Its not just social media, that’s where it started, but the entire promotional tour for this thing put a really bad taste in a lot of people’s mouth, if they had kept their mouths shut and just promoted the movie it would have been great, but they interpreted the movie for us and it’s their interpretation that ruined it for many of us.
