Yeah Fu@K KTM. My 20 890 dukeR blew up at 8400 miles. It was past the 2 year mark (covid cut into my riding) So they said "so sad, to bad" I had 2 groved cam lobes, and one of my followers broke in two, snapping my cam chain, top end was shot. the bike was a total loss. Lucky for me, I had a third party extended warranty that cashed me out, but a about 2K below market value. I was happy to get that. So I bought a Yamaha, no more KTM for me.

As a current KTM 690 owner and previously owned a 1050. Wonderful bikes to ride, currently looking at upgrading, would love the 890 but I won’t due to all the engine issues. KTM really need to get their act together and match quality of components with the way they ride.

Ktm has made the camshaft lobes a subscription service. The OEM ones come with 5,000 miles of service, and then begin reducing power by automatically reducing lift and duration. If you'd like reinvigorate your engine, you can subscribe to the annual camshaft replacement plan.

Keep Taking Money. I had a 990 Adventure. KTM acknowledged a claim for a selector plate in the gear box failing in the middle of no where. Oh, they don’t cover oil, filters, seals or labour for those bits or my lost time. Rode brilliantly when it worked but I had so many issues I just gave up. KTM are terrible to deal with and I cannot trust their products to do anything but fail. Honda CRF 1100l. Zero issues and I trust it.

Could someone explain to me, in this era of modular bikes, how the 690 Enduro R has been around since 2008, and KTM never had the bright idea to design a fairing and slightly larger gas tank to make an adventure version like they did with the 640? How many iterations of their other adventure bikes have came and went in the last 16 years, while they stubbornly avoid this low-hanging fruit?

    • @HartyBiker
      @HartyBiker 2 месяца назад +3

Probably because they keep selling ktm 690s for a lot of money and people do their own adventurising of the bike. As far as ktm is concerned, they keep selling the thing as is, so why bother changing it? I agree, of course, that it would make a fantastic dedicated offroad adventure platform, but I can also see why ktm wouldn't bother.

2022 KTM 890 R bought from new, lots of qc issues, engine vibrates so badly past 6k that the motto is ready to slow. Bad starts, TFT completely clouding up at the sign of any mosture in the air, part never replaced by KTM. At 11k km the engine sounds like junk, it is obvious that this engine wont last, bike still under extended warranty, KTM says they will inspect the cams but at my own cost. my KTM 1090 R was solid, my 890R ain't. we all agree that the 890 is a very capable bike, the lower center of gravity a game changer, but im absolutely and totally done with the brand and the way they are dealing with a massive design failure of the paralel engines and the significant deterioration in overall quality control. thats my 2 cents

The old 80s Honda Xl600/650/700 Transalp was never a lightweight. They sold like hotcakes and been everywhere with many RTW trips. Bombproof. The "adventure" market is getting a bit broad, but there is always room for the "everyday man" all-rounder. The 650 platform has proved its worth already.

Ha! Interesting to see how my rendition of the potential Ducati 698 Mono dual-sport/enduro has started making rounds :D
Though, having now owned the 698 Mono for a short while, they do have a number of issues to sort out before they could put that nice little engine into anything meant to be ridden for more that 20 minutes.. Currently it is just way too raw and buzzy and annoying that would not be good for much anything other than a track.

Hey solid. I've a 701 enduro, it's amazing. What I think we all need is a 450 enduro r or enduro rally. Something with a subframe that we can build a proper adv from. Something legitimately light 120/130kg with great suspension. Honestly, I'd pay a premium for a light premium adv bike. I'm not sure we need more 701 /690 competition, they're already too powerful and too heavy for your average biker... well, me anyway. I can't extract all the power from the bike, thats all wasted. The service intervals are perfect, but I rekon, we need a bike with 50hp that is about 120kg ... that's the sweet spot.

Regarding the KTM cam problem; this has shades of the cam wear problem had with the early V65 engines back in the early 80's and the flat tappet problems Moto Guzzi had with their 1200 engines around 2012. Makes you wonder if a new generation of engine engineers coming in need to relearn lessons the old guard had learned when they started.

KTM is digging a hole on this one…likely their best answer is “a whole new engine not sharing previous architecture” being included shortly on new models.
The KTM double speak, if true are basically saying everything was built right using poor geometry, the wider rocker is to lower point load and buy time, likely not “fixing” anything long term.

Ducati should definitely go after KTM with their big single. Ducati is also a "premium" (i.e. expensive) brand, so they will be able to charge high prices, and competing with KTM means they are not going to be perceived as less reliable...
That RE ADV bike also seems like a good idea, sort of, but the ONLY thing that will make them more desirable than the CF Moto options is that they are not Chinese. That is not nothing, but outside of the US and down under, it may not be enough. RE should stick to improving the 450.
That CSC will struggle to be cheap enough compared to the already cheeeeeep Honda. The Honda is perfect affordable transportation for a high school kid. Freedom, confidence inspiring, and no worries about Junior killing someone while texting...

Looking at how many compainies offer aftermarket rally/adventure fairings for the 690/701, it still surprises me that there has never been a factory version. If Ducati is clever, they bring a Desert X light version! However, from what I read in test, the Ducati single needs quite a lot rpms to come alive, this does not fit an offroad bike.

If they put 890 style tanks on that coming Ducati single it would be perfection. Hopefully it doesn't get a tea cup tank to win the spec sheet wars but instead something for the real world.

    I want to but one.
    Upgrade the warranty.
Including 2nd hand, because ppl are dumping their problem bikes.
Offer a recall warranty, for whomever owns the bike, for 201x years and after.
I hear so many good things, but as many reliability issues.
KTM, just step up, any you will rule the adv market.

Honestly, fuck KTM. Just admit there is a problem and do something about it. I hate that there doesn't seem to be a good competitor for the 790 ADV yet, because that's the one bike I've sat on in that general category that I actually have a decent amount of foot on the ground, but between this and making you pay extra for features that are already built into the bike, they can get stuffed, I'll wait until another company produces something similar.

All for quality components but to say this is only a Chinese quality issue is an invalid statement. Every US manufacturer has had cam issues at one time or another…big mfgs. Even aftermarket mfgs., as well suffered this, I can go back to the 70’s having cam failures in rebuilds, am very familiar with Caterpillar cams or fuel pump cam issues…Harley, too, could go on and on…yes not admitting the issues by any mfg. was and is horrendous…personally experienced that with Cat, and yes made in USA. The final metal treatment process goes off - the end user pays the price, no matter, if small cc or large…sad that QA process is missed so many times. The challenge for us two wheel riders can leave you stranded in a bad way…for what it is worth…enjoy the video format on this channel! Continued good luck and rubber side down…
