- Latrice Kabamba, an Australian choreographer, dancer and former contestant of Street Dance of China Season 4 faced extreme racism on the Korean show Street Woman Fighter 2 (a rip-off of SDC).
After a dance battle between Latrice and a Korean dancer 'Redlic' (Ha Haeun) threw shade at the Australian.
''To be honest… I felt like this is so unfair… It looked like she didn’t put in the effort… I kept thinking that she won because of her physical build… I bit my tongue and did it because I really wanted it.''
- Redlic [“Street Woman Fighter 2” Contestant]
This kind of vile, outright discriminatory behaviour is common place in Korean society and their entertainment industry and should be called out every time. Since the episode aired, racist scenes targeting Latrice have been removed by Mnet. Press the [cc] for active subs.

Latrice killed it from the start just by the pose. Her limbs were so locked and fluid it was indescribable. How she manoeuvred her body while keeping her trunk set and then releasing it to mega powerful moves is just fantastic. Boy, you can see the work she's put into this in order for her body to remember and do those moves is spectacular. Latrice dressed and made up herself as well as her beautiful hair to compliment as well as not get in the way and end up a sweaty mess like the other dancer did. I'm an ex dancer, and Latrice outshone her apparent from the start. You go girl. I'm so proud of you ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉

Exactly, she looked as if she wasn't even trying, she had the rhythm too. The other girl looked like she was trying too hard to put on a good performance. It's simply skill not race.
I’m black and don’t get me wrong we got the sauce 😂 but we don’t inherently have it bc we’re black it’s because of our culture and upbringing. She has grown up surrounded by black culture so of course dancing a black dance style is going to come natural. But at the root of it all it’s due to her experience not her race. It’s like how people try to discredit black athletes because they’re black. They did it to Douglas, Biles, Venus, Serena, Gauff, and more. They base their success on some racial stereotype like black people are juiced up on something from the womb to make an excuse for why they fall short it’s ridiculous 😅. Like imagine calling it unfair that someone is better than you at dancing in a dance competition. Like biss what?! If another Korean girl had come up and danced better than her she would say she had better skills and I’ll work harder to beat her but for her she says it’s unfair and she only won due to her “advantageous physical attributes”?!

FACT. Because I threw my back out just by watching her. I'm being facetious. But seriously, how old was Latrice when she started dancing? And how old was the other girl? And here's another fact this young lady is missing: this style of dancing was *NOT* the *NORM* for South Korea. Hip-hop dancing and music didn't get a foothold in South Korea until the 1990s. But look at BTS. Look at Ateez. EXO. They WORKED for it. True, black people in the US have been exposed to this from birth. However, it seldom, if ever, came naturally. This young lady had been doing this since she was a child. She WORKED on her craft. Don't blame it on race. Because, again, I can't dance like her. I would love to but I can't.

It seems like a lot of people here only have a shallow understanding of what racism really is. Yes, Redlic didn’t say anything about the skin color, but she said something about Latrice’s ethnic physical attribute, which, for Redlic, is the ONLY reason she won that challenge. Although it’s not blatantly racist, it still doesn’t change the fact that Redlic is insinuating that Latrice didn’t win with talent, and that it was all on her attributes as someone of African descent. Latrice wouldn’t cry like that if she didn’t feel offended.
I know racism is still very prominent in Korea, so it isn’t a surprise that someone would think of it that way in that show. I’m sure Redlic didn’t realize it was a racist comment, but hopefully she will learn from this and stop blaming everyone for being better than her 💀
Yes, she was 'only' subconsciously racist. As Korea is homogenous and highly xenophobic, it'll be brushed aside as sheer ignorance at best. This stigma is deeply rooted in Korean society as a past hermit nation. It's not something that can be resolved with time.

The Korean dancer was making excuses for being inferior to Latrice. They were both good but the black dancer's movements flowed one into the other. It seems unprofessional for a great dancer like Redlic to use the word "physical" as a way to not accept defeat. Honestly, Latrice's choreo has a lot of groove and flavour. It's definitely not easy (Latrice does it so well that it looks really easy). Yes, some movements may be simple but the overall performance and way of doing every move is NOT simple. In dance, you don't have to hit every beat, you don't have to follow the lyrics of the song, you just need to show what you want to show through the melody of the song - making sure you're in time and finish on the right count. There is no language barrier in dance, and Latrice has said that already. I feel Redlic is too focused on getting the choreo that she missed out on small details that Latrice may have shown which is one of the reasons she lost. But personally I don't think it's embarrassing to lose to such unique choreo and dancing, like that choreo suited Latrice extremely well and she does it the best, so it was really unnecessary of Redlic to make such comments after/during the selection. - Dancer since 3 (does hiphop, ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, ballroom)

If i say physical violence is bad and it should never be tolerated as a response to words and my example is someone slapping another person, that example is much less visceral than if i say kill instead of slap. Why do you not apply the same standard for Cleopatra? She was one of the most, if not the most influential person in Egyptian history. That is either dishonest or hypocritical. Fictional or real character does not matter, ofc its worse to race swap a historical person because it distorts history, the meaning and what we should take from that historical "lesson". Would you accept it if we race swapped characters black panther? Ofc you would not like that. The Cleopatra example is incredibly offensive to Egypt and the rest of Africa. Africa has incredibly rich history, why would we make a fake documentary for this narrative rather than make a documentary about some of this rich history? I dont want Black Panther to change their characters race, i dont want Cleopatra to be race swapped, i dont want viking movies to be race swapped and i dont want to watch a movie with a Nelson Mandela that is not black. My logic and argument is consistent, i dont want to erase fictional characters history and especially not real history. It seems like you are okay with doing that if it fits with your beliefs.
@@Mas-ij3ti The reason why people use that reason for abortions, is because that's what female reproductive rights attempt to solve. Since womens reproductive rights have been erased, people are being forced to carry their pregnancy in several states in the US, including victims of SA.
Race-swapping a character isn't to purposely swap pivotal and culturally relevant people, because I think we can all agree that people who have made that large of an impact on the world should be depicted accurately when character accuracy is relevant to the media you're watching, as it's the respectful thing to do regardless of race.
Also, the reason why I wouldn't consider Black Panther's race-swapping to be a good thing, is because of the cultural and racial relevancy to the character. The character just wouldn't work if they were white... And, plottwist: I feel the same way about Snow White.
I haven't touched on the Cleopatra argument because I'm not too sure *which* movie you're talking about. I don't watch TV, so I don't bother to keep up with movie releases. But yes, I do agree with that argument. Cleopatra shouldn't be race-swapped.
Plus, as a Lingard (Aka, a viking noble family based in England), I personally only care about a vikings race in a movie depending on how relevant they are to the culture. Key figures in my history shouldn't be race-swapped, but I don't agree that the random background viking that's on screen for five seconds needs to be racially accurate, because the background characters aren't depicting real people, they're just stand-ins to reprisent the idea of Vikings.
Also, my argument is also consistent: Race-swapping is a valid form of reprisentation for as long as cultural relevancy to/and race are not intrinsic to said character or relevant to real life.
So Cleopatra, Nelson Mandela, Black Panther, and Snow White should all be their original race, because race and culture are relevant to the media and real life.
Whereas, Ariel, or random background characters depicting vikings, don't need to be racially accurate, because their race isn't intrinsic to the character.
Am I missing something, I didn't hear her mention race?
I think referencing physical strength when talking about a black woman is a delicate situation. Black women are constantly made out to be more masculine, so I can see why it feels racially coded.
It’s complicated because physicality is a term in dance, and talking about someone’s physical abilities is common, and it’s been said about Korean dancers as well.
Im not a black woman and I’ll never be in this position. If she’s offended she’s offended. I’m just saying this feels slightly more complicated
It felt petty of Redlic to say though and pretty racially coded. Latrice didn't win because of her physical appearance, she won because she was so much more groovy and just had more musicality. She looked like she was having fun, whereas with Redlic I could kinda see how she "grit her teeth" which doesn't really go with the music. Redlic definitely should reflect on what she said. It doesn't make her evil of course, but she definitely needs to get out of that mindset.
Would be complicated because you can never understand it because you are NoT a black woman.
Black women have always been the butt of the joke about being strong, but people don't realize, racists used to test shit on us with no anesthesia because they said we were built strong and more resilient than other races. And we all stuck with the strong Black woman image even when many of us could never be that strong.
She does look masculine though

how when the an example of the Irish Jig was found in Ireland and you didnt make that. That started in Ireland from 1400 by a clan. No you didnt make all that but ok. And yes the girl was insulting. Not everything is black run, owned, produced and taken from Africa. I mean can you even take credit for Venitian Courtesan artistry? no. yours was called Placage, theirs was in 1400. Stop it.

Honestly that girl danced way better than the korean girl
Latrice Kabamba, an Australian choreographer, dancer and former contestant of Street Dance of China Season 4 faced extreme racism on the Korean show Street Woman Fighter 2 (a rip-off of SDC). After a dance battle between Latrice and a Korean dancer 'Redlic' (Ha Haeun), the latter threw shade at the Australian implying that she had an unfair advantage due to her racial physique and ethnicity:
''To be honest… I felt like this is so unfair… It looked like she didn’t put in the effort… I kept thinking that she won because of her physical build… I bit my tongue and did it because I really wanted it.''
- Redlic [“Street Woman Fighter 2” Contestant]
This kind of vile, outright discriminatory behaviour is common place in Korean society and their entertainment industry and should be called out every time. Since the episode aired, racist scenes targeting Latrice have been removed by Mnet.
She didn't mention her race tho? If no this isn't racism but just straight up jealousy.
@@lalapirate9203 ? She insinuated it very clearly.
The translation is talking about body type. I don't know how that has anything to do with her skin color. I have a strong, athletic, curvy body type very similar to Latrice's. If I were on this show, dancing power moves like that, she could have easily made that exact same comment and it still apply despite me having white skin. To me, this translation, is not a direct comment about her skin color. She's saying Latrice is strong and she is which makes doing power moves easier. Many different races can have Latrice's body type, it's not a direct reflection of her skin tone. Also, you're allowed to think whatever you want, but it's very rude for you to call someone illiterate just because their thinking didn't match yours and for simply posing a question.
@@sn6484 It can be taken either way. But let's not kid yourself, most saw this as a racial shade thrown at Latrice and that's why she took it sobbing. And yes, illiterate was bit harsh. My bad, I have edited the comment.
@@sara.cbc92 thank you for editting your response. My problem is that you're inferring it was meant in a racist way. I'm not saying that it wasn't meant in a racist way, I'm saying it *could* have been meant in a nonracist way. I dance and I asked a good friend of mine who is a dancer and is also black and she said 'it sounds as though she's mad Latrice's moves are more powerful than hers and instead of just saying that, she's blaming Latrice's stamina and her ability to use her power'.
I think people should just be open to the possibility that she's merely commenting on Latrice's strong body type instead of jumping to the conclusion that she means that she's better because she's black.
I'd also like to point out that what she said is a very common thing heard said by women speaking about transgender women competing in women's sports. I'm just saying this to point out that it's not a strange thing for someone to find certain body types to have an advantage in sports.
Style isn't a physical thing you can inherit. Latrice just had a better style while redlic was too focused on the technicalities of the dance and forgetting the artistry in dance. Its not an exact science.
That’s a lot of hip-hop from Asia that I see online, they are good at the technical aspects of a dance but lack the musicality and the fluidity of movement.
That's how they truly feel about all of us.

chile I was JUST about to give kpop another go but I stumbled upon korean omegle content creators who react to racists and the korean comments made me go NOPE! In one video there were 2 white racists and 1 black racist, guess which race the koreans roasted in the comments.🙃 Mind you the black boy was the least racist (he said ching chong) and was the only one to apologize after the youtuber called him out. Meanwhile the comments with the most likes and replies were calling him a cotton picker, saying he got shot by the police, and that black people have low IQ.
I watched tons of these videos where almost all of the racists were white and the comments NEVER addressed white people in a negative way. At most they would say that foreigners are cruel and would cry asking why Asians are treated this way. I felt so much sympathy for them, that is until I saw the one video with a ignorant black person. All of a sudden them Koreans were with the shits and had ALL the smoke lmao.

The anti blackness is this world is grotesque. As a black person, I get put down when I am successful at something then my qualifications are diminished over racial stereotyping.
Thank you for reposting! It pissed me off so much I refused to watch the show after that. The fact that they erased that scene after people started calling her racism out to save her ass enraged me. The fact that also like, no one seemed to acknowledge afterwards?
Yup, they tried to wipe it out of existence.

This is a problem that I don’t think a lot of people really understand the full scope of. Like sit back and just think about how crazy it is that multiple aspects of a culture can be widely and repeatedly used by people who DONT VALUE OR RESPECT THE PEOPLE THAT CREATED THE CULTURE THAT’S BEING COPIED!!! It literally doesn’t get anymore sinister than that, black people are put so low on the totem pole in their minds that despite the fact that we have created things that they clearly find to be appealing…we’re STILL not deserving of basic human respect. You should respect people in general but you would think that someone would be a little more cognizant of how their actions and words affect people that are an inspiration to them. I’m NOT saying treat black like deities but considering our clothing, vernacular, mannerisms, dance moves, hairstyles, EVERYTHING is studied by Korean people, why are we not allotted that basic human respect from the jump??? You can’t participate in something like this and then be anti-black that makes no sense. But the reason why they do it is because the lack of respect they have for us causes them to believe that our culture isn’t actually ours….it’s theirs. Nothing we create is seen as significant until other people find a way to flip it and profit off of it in some way & im sick of it.

I have one answer to this…STOP TEACHING THESE PEOPLE OUR CULTURE!
I agree, we need to gatekeep what's ours and profit off of what's ours. I was watching a random video yesterday of Japanese using our music and flow... and I was reading the comments and I was heated... they were praising the group as if they created hip hop music and the flow and everything and I was so annoyed I just couldn't correct people anymore to explain their ignorance that hip hop and rap and drill and all these other genres come from African American culture... not anywhere else.... it's the same thing when people from England think they invented drill when drill came from chicago.... breakdancing comes from us.... hip hop, rnb, country music, cowboys, jazz, blues, rock.... all come from US..... yet the ignorance the the disrespect the world has for us is beyond me. It's infuriating in my opinion. Imagine if black americans took others culture and made it our own the whole world would condemn us because there is a global inherit conspiracy of hatred for blacks world wide.... i don't understand how we as black americans in up in conversations that don't pertain to us... the hate and despise world wide is real...

We as black people are the MOST disrespected people on the face of the earth… so I have to disagree until respect is given then otherwise we must protect what’s ours… our identity and our language and our culture was taken away from us and we created another in America we can’t have history repeat itself….
Latrice is on a whole other level as a dancer. It's especially apparent at 0:25 and 0:33. Not only is she good at isolating her joints and creating smooth and explosive movements, but she knows how to control her energy to match the song. Redlic just looks like she's struggling to be explosive as possible, spending excessively amount of energy and making the dance pair awkwardly with the song.
The way Latrice can't even consider Redlic a rival anymore shows her integrity. A rival is someone who can actively challenge you and push you to better levels. A sore loser has no place as a rival.
as a black person I can’t move an inch of my body so I wonder what made her think that all black people are AMAZING dancers😂
As a korean, the context of her words were kinda lost in translation and twisted to make her into some kind of racist monster. Her words were definitely not cool and not ok and most of the viewers sympathized with latrice on this point. I’m not defending her for the mean intent behind her words nor is ignorance any excuse for the results in offending someone by saying something that can be interpreted as a racist comment. I hope she learned her lesson to not judge lightly on others’ achievements just to promote their own hard work. If i remember correctly, latrice won this round fair and square, JUST by her dancing. Having a great physique doesn’t come easy either so if u want that advantage, then work for it. I hope ppl don’t assume koreans are all racists just by this unfeeling comment nor others who try to defend her actions. If latrice was offended and took it as a racist comment, then the speaker should apologize and try to be more careful. But i also want others to forgive her as a person because she’s really not a horrible monster and her words were words of jealousy and spite and ignorance, not racism.

When will yall learn that you cant imitate us and win going against the original...
I'm a kpop fan since ages, and I always liked the culture of some asian countries, but let's be honest, Korea is on top 5 or 10 if we are being generous as one of the most racist countries, and that's sad, even more if we consider that most of the inspiration and even dance and music are taken from the black people
What this people ignore most of the time is that most of the choreography and music that they study was created by blacks and Latinos, such as hip hop, R&B etc.
