Honestly the way Sylvester reads this, you really think this speech was actually written for 7. It’s so good considering he was doing it at a random convention with no real practice.
Agreed--McCoy's doctor often had that dark edge just under the surface. It wasn't quite the "fury of the Time Lord" (to borrow from "The Family of Blood"). It was...cold.
McCoy said that they were slowly building up to his Doctor becoming more darker and that, had he done a fourth season, they would've shown more of his evil side.
Favourite speeches from 7th: Afterlife: "Fear me..." Curse of Fenric: "Kill Her..." Remembrance: "Unlimited rice pudding..." + "Every great decision..." Happiness Patrol: "You like guns, don't you?" + "Do these things make you happy?" Dragonfire: "The homeless traveller and his old police box..." Battlefield: "Machines of death..." Survival: "There are worlds out there..." Can't include Pandorica as it's 11th's, with Sylvester being his crowd pleasing self - but if he was doing a televised version (instead of a cold-read), I know it would be perfect.
Considering that McCoy is doing a cold read, I think he did an awesome job. I do think that we have to keep in mind, the speech was written for Matt, for the personality that he brings to the Doctor, for his way of speaking. If Sylvester puts a slightly different emphasis on the speech, it's because his style is different.
I think what gets me is even though it was at a convention, and a blind reading McCoy is full on Seventh Doctor here. He's powerful, manipulative, dark and ready for action. I've heard 12th Doctor ones, War Doctor ones, and 9th doctor. this is the best besides smiths.

He just totally owns it! Just becomes the Seventh Doctor as soon as he starts reading :) I guess this is what the Moff meant when he said that you write for all the Doctors exactly the same...
He was given this speech at the end of his first panel at the 2011 Dragoncon...He had no time to practice it...He just read it once to himself and did it...It was so cool!!!
He sounds so goofy in the beginning (typical 7) but that last line delivers menace that not even Matt Smith could quite pull off in this speech. Bravo Sylvester!
This is one of the reasons why I think Sylvester McCoy could still play the role with a decent wig or a dye job and a sturdier umbrella to use as a cane.
If they got McCoy and/or Sophie to cameo in any shape or form in present Who, I would squee like a little girl, much like I did when I first saw the flying Dalek in Rememberance (the first ever episode I ever saw as a kid). To think the era/McCoy got so much flak due to the decline at the time. It's nice to see him get some appreciation all these years later. I don't think many people understand just how much McCoy/Sophie/Cartmel influenced what is now called "NewWho".
My impossible wish would be for each of the classic Doctor actors from their prime to have a series in the style of nu-who, coz imagine them with a modern production and murray gold
I wish I'd seen this happen in person! I was there at the con but missed this presumably amazing event. He is perfect doing this. He and the Eleventh Doctor are so good at being mean.
Out of all the Pandorica speeches done by anyone else other than Smith, McCoy did it the best especially considering that he did this on a dime! I love McGann's Big Finish performance, but his convention speeches are a bit dry considering that he has no prep time to prepare. The same goes for Peter Davison As for Colin Baker, I would love to here his rendition of the Pandorica speech as he can whip up a great last read speech read like McCoy
I can see this scene playing out a lot more menacingly, without the bombastic music but with an eerie undertown as he single handedly strikes fear into an army of spaceships.
I can just see this happening so well, another part has me sees this happening as well and i can't get it out of my head. Shortly after making the speech, and the various ships fly off. Doc "Right, that should keep them busy for a bit, now, lets see how things are going downstairs" starts heading into the bunker whilst talking on the communicator "River, how's it going with getting my tardis here"? River "On my way sweetie, this consoles just not one I'm used to, what do half of these controls do by the way"? Doc "I'm still trying to work out what my fifth incarnation was thin- Ace, why did you have to go and do that"? Ace "It's just a precaution professor, always good to have a backup you say" River "What's happening sweetie? trouble" Doc "Not exactly, ill get back to you" shuts off the communicator "Precautions, Ace, entail a fail safe that disables a device before it becomes a threat, covering the device in nitro nine does not fall into the category of safe"! and he was right, the amount of explosives on the Pandorica, if indeed it had come to setting them off, would have not only destroyed the device, but also stone henge, and a small amount of the country side in the process.
I went watched the original with the audio muted and this playing, and he landed it almost beat for beat. (mind, the editing was vague enough to mean there were basically only 3 really important zooms/beats etc,. but still) It was a REALLY cool experience to see this scene from a different doctor's perspective.
I know people keep arguing over things like 'I can imagine 4 doing this' or 'I can imagine 1 doing this', but I think this is one of those rare moments in Doctor Who where the personalities of all the Doctors comes together. I can imagine every doctor performing this speech and owning it in their own way.
> The 10th Doctor admired his 5th incarnation greatly (Time Crash) > Matt Smith's favourite Doctor was Patrick Troughton's 2nd Doctor > The 11th Doctor (going by 10's reaction before regenerating) seems to have admired his 10th incarnation even more. :)
I love the seventh doctor.. He was dark and always knew how to play the game.. This is my favorite version of this speech.. Its playful then he gets dark
He had everyone at the end Silver Nemesis believing he'd given up when in fact he was just setting up the Cybermen for destruction & Lady Peinforte for becoming one with Nemesis. Seven may always have a plan, but he's very good at making everyone believe he doesn't.
The most diabolical Doctor doing this speech is actually much much more convincing that he would win despite the odds as compared to any other of his incarnations.
I love both versions! Personally though, what I find to be the best difference of them all was how little emphasis Sylvester puts on the "I am talking". Matt's was great, but McCoy shows how he doesn't have to be loud, but the Doctor wants those aliens to stop whizzing about, and still gets the attention, because after all, this is the Doctor, they may be out to get him, but maybe it would be worth erring on the side of caution and doing what he says.
I just did this with my friends, we had a contest to see who would be the best at doing the speech, and I won!!!!! This is a very good speech, I just love how they all just turned away after it was done!!!!
Did always love Silversters darker more narcissistic tone as The Doctor, I'm pretty young but Remembrance of the Daleks will always be one of my favourite episodes, 7th Doctor is what I'd imagine a TimeLord to be mysterious, cunning, narcissistic, emotionless, looks down on others kinda aristocratic stiff upper lip pfft tone. And Silverster nails that at times.
What I love about this series is that why all the actors who played the Doctor had very different approaches to the character, at the end of the day anyone of those actors could say this speech or any of the of the other great Doctor speeches and it would still feel like the same character.
@all13Doctors You're probably right. After all, this speech fit Matt Smith to a tee. He hit every note just right in that speech. I love watching the 2010 Proms version of the speech with the Cybermen, Cylerians, and vampire girls watching the Doctor, then leaving along with the others on the screen as the music crescendos!
Cyperleader: Seal the Pandorica! _(the Pandorica starts closing)_ Seventh Doctor: I can see you are not interested in talking, then. Oh, well. Still... _(the Pandorica suddenly stops closing)_ I though you might like I to know that I figured out this little trrrap of yours out, say, five hours ago, and took my prrrecautions. Cyperleader: ...What? Seventh Doctor: See, it's quite interesting, really. People tend to think that recalibrating a statis chamber into a teleporter would be impossible, but if the chamber's hardware is the cheap kind and you have the know how, it can be can done in a trice. Dalek: STOP THE DOCTOR BEFORE- Seventh Doctor: Verrry chatty all of a sudden, arrren't you? Sorry, but as much as I'd like to stay, I can't. There's a universe to save, so I'm really rather busy right now. _(waves sarcastically)_ Byeee! _(teleports away)_
I love that he did this, and I quite agree that I'd love to hear the other Doctors try it...imagining Tom Baker or Colin Baker especially giving this speech rather blows the mind. That said, I don't think anything could top the original speech :D
I picture him sitting in a desk with his hat hiding his eyes and saying this into a mic while his face is on a giant screen. Then when he says Guess who he leans forward with the cocky little smile. Little hand motions when he talks. When he says lose I picture him leaning forward with a smirk. Then as it goes on, the smile fades and it turns more serious until finally he's just glaring and leaning totally forward. Then at the very end of the speech when the space ships are gone he smirks again.

+Doctor Who Fan I disagree. Nine could definitely pull it off, albeit with very different tone and inflection from the original. He'd alternate between goofiness and tranquil fury. McCoy was my Doctor and will always be my Doctor. Also, without Ace we would not have had Rose. As for who likes who best in the actors: Matt took his cue from Patrick Troughton ... Frazer Hines recognises most of Troughton's quirks in Matt's performance. Interestingly, McCoy ALSO took his cue from 2 and played like the Clown until the moment got tough. I can see some of McCoy in the Eleventh Doctor's performance.
I said that judging on the Doctor's reaction while regenerating into 11. It was evident he admired his 10th incarnation fondly therefore his next incarnation would obviously admire it a lot.
On the note of 'Big Finish' you might like to know that they've confirmed a special multi-Doctor audiobook titled 'The Light At The End' and it feature's the 4th to 8th Doctors to celebrate the 50th anniversary.
A funny and comical, rewritten into a dark and mysterious man with secrets. Basically the characterization of every Doctor that follows McCoy. Comedy that hides tragedy.
@DoctorDragonball Guessed that, but totally agree. A multidoctor story is really the only thing fitting for the 50th anniversary, but Christopher Eccleston has already said that he isn't too keen about returning for it, like Tom Baker, but Tom Baker said that he would prefer a cameo rather than play a major role in the story, and I think Eccleston would be similarly minded, so I think that the only way we could get Eccleston in would be to have McGann regenerate into him
Honestly the way Sylvester reads this, you really think this speech was actually written for 7. It’s so good considering he was doing it at a random convention with no real practice.

+Crowley9 Maybe he is batman!

Lou Gagliardi True, but for Batman, the thinking skills and manipulation are heavily supplemented by an uncanny ability to beat people senseless.
How would he have a plan and 11 doesn't???
I've never heard the phrase "I don't have anything to lose", sound so much like a threat before.

Oh, you really should watch McCoy! He is one of my favourite classic Doctors, just brilliant!
