  • This short clip illustrates the additional consideration motorcyclist need to give to cyclist if they are using the nearside lane in town at traffic lights.
The first junction is actually a LH filter as indicated by the advisory white arrow in the road. But as it has no dedicated filter it moves off at the same time as the RH lane. Normally motorcyclists can use their increased acceleration to move in front of the RH lane traffic before the junction closed to one lane.
At both junctions one factor you will notice is the delay in my pull away which destroys my ability to get in front. This is because everyone else pulls away on the Red Amber light which is an offence. Holding for the green as legally required and having cyclist in fronts makes using the LH lane difficult at best.

The current form of the cyclist's advance box is antiquated and needs to be updated. The left half should be for cyclists and the right half should be for motorcyclists. Penalising motorcyclists for getting to the front of the queue of traffic is ridiculous, as is allowing cyclists to spread out across the entire lane to wobble off at 5 miles an hour. I firmly believe that much of the snarled London traffic is caused by cyclists, and they should be given dedicated routes around the city, and likewise there should be routes where they are banned, allowing for faster travel by motorised vehicles.
