    The New Gibson Les Paul / SG Soft Case / Gig Bag had me really curious when I first saw it. I wanted to know if it was any good or not so when I got one with my new 2019 Guitar Center Exclusive Les Paul Special, I was ready to put it to the test. I compared it with a regular Gig bag in this video - • Is the New Gibson "Sof... ?sub_confirmation=1 and I concluded that these are many times better than the original style.
    However, how does it compare to a proper soft shell case? How much do they cost new? $149. That is quite a lot for a 'Soft Case' especially when a hard case costs $199 new.
    In this video, I will go over many pros and cons of this soft shell gig bag case as compared to the hard case. In the end, I found myself being able to take both sides. With just a few minor improvements to this new design, I could find myself liking them better than a hardshell case. Until then, the Taylor made hard gig bag cases will be my favorite style!

    Overall, after I've beaten this thing up, I now have a better understanding of this soft case. I truly believe there are situations where this would be more ideal than a hard case. These are great for students that have to take their instruments to lessons as the storage capacity in these things are great! I can also see these being great for city buskers for similar reasons. I REALLY like the Taylor hard Gig Bags (I like them better than hard cases) so with a few tweaks to this Gibson design - they might be on to something!

      SBK used to make over cases for Fender cases. Basically if you were flying you could put the Fender case in the armoured SBK case and not have to worry about transferring all your stuff over. Not sure they still make them, I don't imagine they sold that well as you might as well just buy an SBK case.
      A more homemade solution a guy I worked with bought a large equipment case from Sam Ash and flew to London with his guitar in a cheap gig bag, some pedals and his clothes inside. All fine. However this was pre 9/11 so you wouldn't be able to do that now.

    When I was young and trying to learn, my mentors showed me the "turn your guitar case so that if it fell open the lid will fall against your thigh", possibly saving you from a tragedy. Also wear your belt buckle at your hip instead of your front to prevent buckle rash to the back of your guitar

    • @Jb-of8tl
      @Jb-of8tl 5 лет назад +1

      Steven Kimsey that’s really useful, exept for the belt thing. Guitars are built to be used and abused, don’t worry about a couple of scratches from your belt and just focus on playing. idk

    • @stevenkimsey7039
      @stevenkimsey7039 5 лет назад

      I never actually wore my belt buckle to the side. The older guys just told me about it. I have several nice guitars with buckle rash on the back. I sometimes wish I had turned that buckle. I always carry my case with the lid to my thigh though, better safe than sorry 🍺🎸

    The price points of both make the hard case the better buy every time for me. An extra $50 is a small price to pay for the added piece of mind. If the soft case was around $75 - $100, then it would give me reason to consider it over the hard one if I absolutely had to have a Gibson branded case.

    I’m starting to dig a gig bag more nowadays. This leather/faux-leather one seems pretty good to me. One thing that makes no sense to me is the outside pocket with no lock. Either it goes inside or it should be able to lock. One thing that would send it over the edge is like memory foam around the bottom edge to really secure the instrument. Very cool

    honestly compared to any other gig bag that thing has hardshell level protection (in comparison especially to any fender,epiphone squire or lower gigbag) but at the end of the day the hardshell is tried and tested for decades

  • @phayzyre1052
    @phayzyre1052 8 месяцев назад

    Given how pricey Gibson’s still are, if that thing doesn’t come with a hard shell case, then forget it! Yeah, the softshell case might be easier to carry and all of that, but given how Gibson guitars are so prone to neck snaps, a hard shell case still gives better protection! Also, if you are a musician who travels on an aircraft and given how they handle luggage, good luck because you’re going to need it.

  • @MechanicallyMusical
    @MechanicallyMusical 5 лет назад

    Hard shell in my opinion is much more protective especially if you have an SG because they are prone to breaking at the headstock. Putting a neck lock in a hard case would be cool also because it has a combination lock which wouldn’t randomly pop open. I’ve use both and I’m a lot more confident in a hard case.

    It would be pretty cool if Gibson reinforced their soft case, similar to how Taylor does their "hard" cases. This way, you can carry it any way you want, and the outer padding of the case further minimizes impacts when compared to a traditional hard case.

    The first thing I think about when I see this soft case is the cheap luggage my parents owned back in the late 60s. You put lots of good graphics here to prove your point. We won’t get into you wrestling your bag on the floor. Wow, that was an image I can’t seem to get out of my head. I’ll stick with a hard shell case. But I do have a reunion blues gig bag that fits very snug. That would be my first choice or a mono bag, if I were looking for a gig bag. The fit of the rb bag is very snug and compact with lots of padding. Hey, keep up the great videos. You have a future in comedy if you decide to change careers. Thanks!

    I think the added few seconds it takes to get my guitar out of the soft case wouldn't be a deal breaker. I think we're stretching that con just a little..lol. That being said, I would still rather have a hard case. I just feel more comfortable having that added protection. Plus on the two acoustic guitars I have, I wouldn't put them in anything but a hard case. They were both inherited and I would be heartbroken if something happened to either of them.

    The hard case for my Sully Erna Studio feels like it weighs 50 pounds empty!!
    I really like that new soft case but if I was to do a lot of traveling I would want a hard shell case. A commentor in part 1 said that he gigs in a van and on planes and only uses the deluxe gig bag (old style) . He claimed he has never had an issue, to which I replied " just wait" or something like that. In my mind if I am going to be putting my guitar in something for protection and it will be getting bounced around in a vehicle, handled by other people and that sort of stuff, I want as much protection as I can get! I like the way the Taylor bag did the sides as well, but what is the weight difference in the Taylor and the Gibson bags?
    In the end it comes down to this point - what is the daily life of your guitar?
    I'm glad you pointed out about the downfall of multiple guitars will fit also means it's not a snug fit and your guitar can slide around. I wish they would come up with a liner that forms to your guitar, like those mattress pads made of foam that do that. They could stuff a bunch of that in and then when you put your Les Paul in it will conform to that as well as when you put in your SG or even an ES style, heck even Explorers and such. One outside size for all guitars with that foam on the inside. THAT would be THE case to own!!

    For me, although the soft cases are much more practical with padding and zips etc, they just don't look cool. It's like Fanny Pack vs a real leather belt with a lion's head on it, or Indy Jones v Dora the Explorer look to me. TBH I feel the same about Dayglo midnight blue zebra stripe koa wood 8-string 'performance guitars'. Whether you want to look like Johhny Greenwood or Kenny Gs rhythm guitarist of course that's up to you. It has to look cool and have rockstar cred for me. I don't think you would catch Jonny Marr being photographed with a soft case (even if his roadie insists on'em!!). Bottom line..use a hard case and suffer a bit for your rock star cred - it's all about attitude, often more than the number of notes you can shred in sweep picked Mixolydian arpeggios!!!

    Its pretty simple to say it's better than the old gig bag but of course you'd wanna keep your nice gibsons in a proper,hard shell case. And please,take it easy on that poor bag!you just beat the snot out of that thing!

    Really enjoyed that, but my guitar never leaves the house, I will stick with my chainsaw case.

    I was expecting a more practical science comparison, i.e., launching them into brick walls at 100 kph to see if the crash test dummy painted guitar inside survives. Follow that up with the drunk drummer standing on the guitar case experiment :)

      Aquila Rossa Yup the protecrion of the guitar is the most relevant and he did not even go there. It is like testing a watch with a million functions but if you ask the time they find out it is not on it hahaha.

    Hey so what about humidity? Is the gigbag good enough for a full-time case?

    I think those soft cases would be really good if you were in a small touring band and had limited space.

    To me it just seems that big companies like gibson and fender cant get gig bags right compared to reunion blues, gator etc.

    Hi there, Would you consider taking a les paul in this soft case as a checked luggage in the airplane? Do you think it was built for this usage too? Thanks so much
