Lowered 321ft Underground into a Cave - Gaping Gill Winch - Ingleborough, Clapham, Yorkshire Dales

- Gaping Gill is a cave in the north western part of the Yorkshire Dales with the highest unbroken waterfall in Britain inside it. However, most people don’t get to see this waterfall because it’s inside a cave and access is restricted. You can only go in the cave if you’re an experienced potholer, the general public aren’t allowed in. Except, that is, twice a year during the winch meet when around 2,000 people get to be lowered into the cave to see this wondrous, extensive underground cavern, one of the biggest in Britain.

That's really cool! The winch event was really good. I ended up camping (Bivvying) on top on Ingleborough the night before. It's an amazing area of Yorkshire to explore..
Hello, I'm hoping to visit for the next meet in August. I'll visit with a partner - would we both be able to be in the cave at the same time? I'm not asking for 2 people on the winch at once :)

Aye its normally "just a hole in the ground". The winch is not a permanent fixture. Two local caving groups set it up for two separate weeks each year.
Do many people get turned away because of too many people showing up to go down?
Yeah they do, they turn around people and tell them to come back the next day. They run the winch on a first come first served basis.

@@ffontaine6438 That's fair enough. They do run it over a few days and its worth getting up there before sign up starts if you decide to take the risk.

Yes, anyone can rock up and go down but only during two weeks out of the year, one in March and one in August. All other times to gain access into cave you must be part of one of the local caving clubs.

@@CozyQueenAdventures Its done on a first come first served basis each day the winch is running. Only one person riding the winch at a time. They will usally be about 15 to 20 people down there.
How much does it cost.?
Can you go back the chair when your finished?
You get one go in the chair on the way down and another go on the way back up after exploring the cave chamber.
