  • The link between Yorkshires most famout pothole Gaping Gill and where the water rises at Ingleborough Cave has been sought after for decades. Geoff Crossley and Geoff Yeadon were on the verge of making the hisotic Link and in May 1983 invited Sid Perou to film the historic breakthrough

    One of my favourite films and one of the hardest to make, It records an important event in the history of Yorkshire caving.

    What a triumph of the human spirit; at the point when they began singing 'Jerusalem', it was a chills and 'proud to be British' moment....superb!!!

    Having just taken up caving again after a very long break, Sid Perou's films are an absolute goldmine.

    I saw this film on the BBC (or ITV?) in the '80s and both then and now the thing that amazes me isn't so much the cavers getting through, it's the camera crew going through the same caves with all that equipment.
    Thanks for posting.

    SId, these uploads are fanscinating and withstand the test of time remarkably well. I was a kid in the 80s and shows like this is what shaped my imagination and drove me into diving and travelling the world ...

    Following on from watching The Rescue, a Disney + film on the Thai cave rescue, I have been enjoying various caving content on RUclips. These older British films are the best I’ve found. So natural and understated. The lack of hype allows true appreciation of what these guys and girls are doing.

    One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Film stands the test of time over video. Brilliant.

    Great video and what an achievement. I work in health and safety where working at height is a massive part of our work, and I also went to the same school as Lee Craddock (2 years older than me) who lost his life in Gaping Gill in 1995. Things like that happening to people you know never leave you and given me the passion to stop people getting hurt. Glad these men came out unscathed.

    Grand job. Circa 1980. Full respect lads. It's a shame caving in the dales has seen a drop off. Loss of new recruits from the uni clubs, I guess.

    Wait a sec.... Did I misunderstand?? So these guys went from GG to Ingleborough and yet the diving team that carried them the bottles thru did the same trip but in reverse but had to set off with extra bottles to carry, did it without the same support crew, TV coverage or ending glory? Is that correct?

    • @Cavingcameraman
      @Cavingcameraman  6 месяцев назад

      Yeadon and Crossley had spent many trips setting up the connection. The support divers dived through the connecting sump and the SAME bottles were used for the two Geoffs to dive out. The support divers exited with our film team.

    I like my diving and climbing. but bugger that for a laugh. Full respect though. The only thing i've done that's dafter was classic motox. You might as well have stood setting fire to five pound notes while your friends threw muck and brick at you, stopping occasionally for trips to hospital. Still if that's what floats your boat.
