the longer stirrup length is a good exercise to learn to post from knee and develop core strength instead of relying on stirrup. A lot of posting without stirrups achieves same - lower leg stability. The goal should always be to direct the horse with the seat rather than leg - heel should never be ahead of the girth and toe never behind it in my classes ...
I lengthened my stirrup leathers and it improved my stability. I have long legs and riding without stirrups helped ‘lengthen’ my legs. I am playing with 1/2 holes to tweak this. Thanks for the review
Thanks Amelia for sharing your expertise in riding and using the tack properly for safety purposes and comfort for you and your mount. I love horses so much and had my own for 5yrs. I raised my colt from six months old and grew up with him. He taught me so much patience and love in that time. I was able to break him at a little over one year. The experience although difficult for a young girl, he taught me how able I was training him. Never run away from a challenge! That's how my horse taught me life lessons I keep in my heart and live by those lessons. God bless you and your horse always. ❤😊😊😊😊😊😊 🏝🌸🏝🌸🏝🌸 Aloha, Nani🌸
Changing stirrup length is so much easier for english riders than for western riders 🙈 I've taught myself to do it from up on the horse, too though. Thanks for the info!
Could you do a video about the difference between normal stirrups vs offset stirrups, what they might and might not be beneficial for, and how they affect your position and the biomechanics of how you ride?
i'm struggling with this. i ride dressage (um..try to) and one of my riding pals says mine are too long. when you say bottom of stirrup at your ankle bone do you mean the absolute bottom of the stirrup itself OR bottom meaning where the stirrup pad is where you will rest your foot? thanks, amelia. i adore your straight forward teaching methods and ALL your incredible help. i'm there with ya thursday nights. when we get both of you it's even more insightful and hilarious!! and i usually try your wednesday tip when i ride my buddy (he's the one in the bitless bridle cuz he lost 9 teeth a year ago May). so thanks for all you do. your commitment to the sport and compassion for your fellow dressage wannabes is applaudable and so rare.
I always love your videos Amelia! Not a question about the video content but can you tell me about that mare? Is she yours? Who is she by? I'm in love!
Thank you for this -I was never told why my legs were going all over the place the stirrups were too long-(I’m a beginner with dressage) Guess I have to find a new teacher.
what about changing weight in one stirrup or the other when you find your horse falling in or out? For instance, when my horse is falling in while I am posting a circle or corner, I may put more weight in my outside stirrup and post out of the circle/corner. Does that align with your thinking?
Yes, you can do some of that. But you don't want to be leaning too much off to the side! I am doing a tips and trivia party this weekend. Save your seat! www.amelianewcombdressage.com/summer-party-2022
Hi thanks for your diodes. One question: I notice while you’re firing your heels are not pushed down. What’s the correct positing of the heels while riding? Should it be in the same position in trotting? Please reply.
Your heels should be slightly below your toes. I'm doing a 30 Day Challenge on Rider Position. Check it out: amelianewcombdressage.com/rider-position-2023/
Stirrups are so weird for me. Sometimes I have to raise or lower a notch. I feel different on various days. Yes my stirrup leathers are uneven! They go on different notches as one has stretched out!
What do you suggest for getting used to a new stirrup length? I figured out that my stirrups were too long and shortened them but it felt way too short even though I adjusted for only one hole shorter, so no even much. But the muscles in my leg had a really hard time adjusting, especially during the first ride. Is that just something to just work through and get used to or is there a better or easier way to go about it?
It's hard to tell without seeing a photo. It could be a combination of reasons or just one. If you want to share a photo to my dressage club on facebook, you can get more feedback! facebook.com/groups/ameliasdressageclub
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage I tried it on my last lesson and I felt very secure for the first time in my stirrups….but now I am bouncing in my canter…almost like I am doing light seat. Thank you for this. Very helpful. The mare is just lovely - if you have time - what is her breeding?

Lots of walk helps, and readjusting your pelvis to make sure you're on your seatbones straight up and down. :)
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage thank you! Will try that if/when adjusting stirrup length again.
The rides after the first one definitely went better. :)
Thank you super helpful !

Helpful
Glad you think so!
How does one adjust stirrup length due to inequality of leg length? My left leg is shorter than my right by 1/4". Should my left stirrrup be shorter?
yes, that is the only case when they would not be even. Measure them as independent legs :)
Do you always wear spurs ??? My new horse is very lazy so am thinking about using spurs for schooling 🤓🤔
Be sure to click the link and RSVP!
what does it mean if i did the ankle-length stirrup check but they are still too short? is the saddle not good for me?

So know I am confused because I have been taught by someone else to put 80% weight in my stirrups and 20% of my weight into my saddle.
Oh my gosh! No! That's too much!!

I saw that too, in dressage with alecia and tash - they talk about that all the time and present it as a hidden secret of the top riders.
