I had a similar experience with a young buck deer hunting. I could literally reach out and touch em. I let em go. The experience was 100x worth more than taking a tag
That’s what I don’t get about hunting purely for trophies. I’m a wildlife photographer and shooter, but I never understood hunting like this. I’ve had magical experiences like this, except I know they’re still alive out there. I don’t feel the need to own their body parts, the memory and photos are enough. Buck hunting seems like one big dick measuring contest, no offense. But I have the utmost respect for those who do it to feed their family. I would respect people who hunted for the best/most meat on a deer, but idk ending the life of one just for a wall ornament seems kinda sad to me. But some populations need to be culled, so hunting will always be necessary. Making it about the antlers and artificially selecting out strong bucks from the gene pool seems kinda messed up to me though.
@@CitizenSnips69 maaaaan 10000% with you on that one. I'm a put food on the table hunter. Just being out in the woods alone and seeing a deer if it's not in a shot distance is enough for me. There really is something magical about having unforgettable experiences.

@@yurdinger1656 Man I love to shed hunt. I know this isn't what you meant by your comment, but I just thought I would add on to what you were saying. Being to find and hold a part of a deer that is still alive is something else. They tell the story of the deer through scratches and broken tines. Additionally, you can tell the health of the deer/herd. Furthermore, getting to hold something he traveled all throughout their domain with is so cool.

Now, there’s only so many antler themed tools and furniture pieces one can make, so mounting a skull is not all that bad as long as it’s used. The whole dick measuring contest is real though. In my opinion, if you go out there with a camera hoping for a photo op to show off, you’re already approaching things with the wrong attitude. Celebrate the hunt, not the killing, so to speak. Especially given that most of the time these animals are killed at range. “Took down” is never the correct word for this because, well, no human could take these guys down without weapons they themselves did not design or create.

Not such an awesome experience for the elk.
First year hunting, I decided to try a new field during gun season. Walked to the other side of the field and sat up on the side of a ridge for a better vantage. I sprayed doe urine on my boots as a cover scent. Little while later a doe comes running across the field with her tail down. I figured there was probably a buck behind her and, sure enough, a few minites later, this tiny little forkie comes trotting out of the trees with his nose in the dirt following her trail. He cuts across my tracks and starts following them directly to me. I did want to shoot him because he was so scrawny and barely had any meat on him, but he was getting so close I had to keep my gun trained on him because I was worried he may run me over. He walked in to about 9 yards, stopped, looked around for a minite, and kept following my trail away from me where I had tried to find another spot to sit when I got there. I wasn't really even trying to be still, he was just so preoccupied with that doe that he didn't care. I regretted not shooting him almost immediately because that would've been my first deer, and I ended up getting skunked that season, but looking back, that deer was almost too dumb to shoot. It all worked out in the end; the next year, I ended up shooting my first buck on the last day of the late muzzleloader season, last day I was planning on hunting for the year, and he was way bigger body-wise.

My uncle shot a bull once. Had no intention on killing one. Was just hanging out with his buddies. He found a nice spot under a tree to take a nap. He woke up with an elk smelling him. He said he shot it because nobody would believe the story if he didn’t.
I always say I’m not after anything specific it all depends on the hunt and if it gets the heart racing.

people dont understand that this is THE BEST POSSIBLE AND MOST PEACEFUL DEATH this animal would EVER have living in the wild, and they will argue (well you didnt need to kill it you could have just let it live) and sure you are right, it would have lived for years and then eventually die a HORRIFIC death either being eaten alive by wolfs, and yes i said eaten alive, they will pile on top of this elk, and just start tearing its body open and the elk will be alive for a good 10 -20 minutes sometimes even longer while it is being EATEN ALIVE!!!... I can tell you one thing, IF I WAS AN ELK I WOULD MUCHHHH rather die because of being shot by a hunter and dying a VERY quick remotely PAINLESS death, rather then running for my life from wolves and when they finally catch me being tackled by 6 or 7 of them and torn apart while still alive.... and at least now that hunter has a freezer PACKED with meat that he can give to his family and friends to enjoy REAL FOOD... people that have a problem with hunting JUST SIMPLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT HUNTING IS, and what hunting means to millions of people on this earth..... if we have to deal with your vegan asses blocking our roadways when we are trying to go to work to provide for out families, then you can deal with us HUMANELY killing some animals to feed our family and friends.
