Hello! I am a 62 year old female so not really a target viewer per say, but let me tell you... you are amazing! My father was a master carpenter/cabinet maker and general handyman and he would be so impressed with you! You are excellent at this! I have watched almost all of your videos since your renovation of your concrete slab home and you are doing so good. Keep it going! Don't give up. You are smart enough to know when you need to step back breath and refocus when you hit a roadblock. There are always people who will know more or think they do but you let people know when you don't know what to do and then you figure it out. Yourdking fine. Keep up the good work.
This is honestly so impressive. This is amazing how he just raised the roof off and re built the entire walls
Ehh, people freak out when they hear the word "structure" but it's not that big of a deal. I'm a dumb university professor and I've fixed an off-kilter structural wall. Just go slow and double check your measurements.
Hi mate, I'm a carpenter and the reason your walls are bowing out is due to the main ridge beam not being supported hence its sagging. If you can raise the ridge beam to its proper height the walls will pull back plumb, you may need to replace the ceiling joists as well as they would have sagged from all the weight. Hopefully this helps mate, keep up the great content!
I agree with the statement, also for such a long span, a steel I-beam would help in the long run for such a long span as an older garage rebuild.
Lol that, or the foundation is sh¡t! I'd go with foundation LOOOOONG before I'd start talking ridge beams. Just my opinion 🤷
He didn’t check if walls are plumb. Carpenter might be right
I really appreciate how transparent you are. Each time you confess messups it builds trust with your subscribers like me. Keep up the good work. Really enjoy the videos.
Agreed. Like the pressure treated bottom plate
If there ever was a project where hiring a structural engineer as a consultant was worth the money, this is it. Better to have a pro map out any unforeseen issues up front than the added stress of these surprises. Maybe worth considering for the next project. But really awesome job so far!
You don’t gotta be a prob to see the issues this garage has
structural engineer would give him plans for a new garage and tell him to rebuild.
When you were telling us your checklist on building the wall, you definitely didn’t mention the fact that you need treated lumber when touching concrete. Also code is when u have a splice in your bottom plate. u need anchors on both sides of the splice. Love the vids
Collar ties Bro, you need at least a 2×6 or a 2×8 spanning from wall to wall tying into each rafter, and probably need to gusset all connection points. That will stop the weight of the roof from pushing the walls outwards and distribute the weight down the wall properly.
This!
collar ties will definitely help fix the issue! I wonder what the span of the garage is and what the code in his city is ~ after 24 feet we have to use trusses here in san diego
At that point I would just tear the whole place down and build from the ground up 😂
Kinda late now haha but that would have been better as you know it'd be done right
The way he is breaking it down may cost 2k-5k in disposal. He does it once like he said it’d be 20k-30k. I always surprises me every time I have to do something like that but demo guys charge a ton.
Why would he start doing something the right way now? 😂
I think you did an awesome job. I think the job is gonna be a whole lot cheaper doing it that way than replace in the whole building. I really enjoyed the video...
He actually did it correctly to code and save himself $15-20k. Good on him man.
I’ll be honest, and this in no way is meant to start off like I’m a hater, the quality of the videos overall felt weak since the “great door painting” of a couple years ago. BUT this episode, for me, completely erased any doubts. HUGE props to you for raising the roof and reframing everything the way you did. GIANT respect!
I would add a roll up or double door to the back of the garage for bigger access to and from back yard. Also, you should sit down and do the math on those truss spans vs the size lumber used, not sure your there.
You should have used a laser level to make sure all the framing is level to one another because the concrete is not always level
Was going to type the same thing. Not a single level was seen all video. Is plum and level lol
No acro props under there either. How you even going to raise a roof if you’re not able to Jack it up properly?
I ask the same question then saw your comment.. floor is never level.. :D
@@BudlongTaco I don't know what video you were watching but the level was in almost every single shot
Your work ethic is astounding.
Thats an impressive amount of work my friend. Pretty cool seeing you take on a big project like this...
Got to give the OG some props - the mess of a wall was still standing and kinda functioning 😂😂 Plus the mess means sooo much more content you can make xD
Nice to see you with a respirator on this time!
Dude! There are times watching you that I'm fearing for your life. I love that fact that like myself you work alone almost all the time. The thing I like the most watching you is that you appear to be fearless and will take on anything. Keep your ears peeled because if God ever wants another Ark built you may have a job.
Where you started from to where you are now shows your motto of courage. First time commentor but a long time watcher.
Man. You looked so pissed on that last turn. Feel the pain. Respect the effort.
Everything looks like a tornado went thru, before it looks better. You have achieved that. Lol
OMG ... YOU ARE THE MASTER OF COURAGE AND SWEAT!!!
Highly suggest checking if any permits were ever pulled or inspections were done during construction, I doubt it. If that's the case some places will force you to demolish it even if you re-build it up to code and get new permits. Check so you wont be throwing away all this effort and money. Also probably a good idea to frame in a side door or two while you have it all taken apart, especially if you plan on making separate back rooms for storage, much easier access.
Great job! As goggins says, go back again! You got this!
Always roof first. Fix the leak then replace the wet stuff.
Great work, essentially made a new building lmao.
Tip with any glass (if you have any left to deal with) use sellotape and cover the entire pane, that way even if it shatters the sellotape holds all the shards together reducing chances of getting cut and also making cleanup easier.
Man go to harbor freight and get there air assist bottle jack. I use mine all the time for jacking up walls. Trust me you wont regret it. Hook it to a pancake air compressor and just pull the trigger. Its rated for 20 tons it will lift anything you want. I think it was $120
You’re the freaking man!!!!
I cannot believe you did that Alex, removing and rebuilding the walls. You're an absolute maniac!
Brother! You’re a machine!! And on top of it all…. You’re doing it with smile and a “f*ck it, let’s do it” attitude!! Keep doing your thing brother, much love! Cheers!
I had something like that but not as bad obviously. My whole oil heating system was installed on a wall that wasn't anchored anywhere. It was supported by 3 screws. On its other side, was a shower and sink, all anchored to the wall.
I had a plumber convert the oil system to electric. The system is used to warm water in a tank... That wad also anchored to the same flimsy wall.
What saved me was that the shower failed and I had to replace the floor. That's when I found out the wall didn't go to the floor or to the far end of it.
Rebuilt everything while managing to not touch any of the heating system. Everything now is anchored strong and hard. The feeling we get after doing such a task is amazing. Today I can say: I KNOW HOW TO BUILD A WALL A FLOOR, MIX CONCRETE, PLASTER... I KNOW STUFF NOW!!!!
Also, thumbs up for using Ryobi tools. An other proof that it's 15% the tools, 85% the craftman.
Bottom plate having pressure treated wood is BIG. Any form of a porous material that is on the ground will most likely have moisture buildup at some point. So that was a good call on the inspectors part. It sucks you had to change it, but better safe than sorry!
Looking good. Great job
Hola! 🖐Oh WOW!!! This is about the most nerve wrecking video I have ever seen. I thought for sure you were nuts for even attempting this. 😵I am so glad that it all worked out, great job!!! Looking forward to the next one. Take care and have a good one, Adios!👊
crazy. curageous. insane. faith. i thanked God that you didn't get hurt. Keep it up bro. Love the videos!
I didn't want this episode to end....can't wait to see the next video. Would love to see all that mess get cleared up so you have a fresh slate to work with but with news on the roof at the very end, it sounds like you have bigger problems for now!
Love your work and determination, Bro. Right away, I subscribed to your channel! God bless you
Just a heads up....A "T" post/brace is stronger than the doubled 2x4 when using the jack and the double topplate should overlap at your corner to lock it together...good luck with the rest of the tackling of that building
I'm addicted to this series. So inspiring honestly! After watching this I think I have the courage to make my first floating shelves now! Doesn't seem like much but sometimes it's hard to even get started!
This gives me some inspiration. I have a 10x12 shed that I have to build a support wall inside before I cut down the front half of the shed, to try and save half of it for random storage. Not cement foundation but I will remove the floor in front and see if the wood is still good. Lots of work for me but I'm going to take a look
Wow wow wow! Dang man, this is a PROJECT! Keep it up and remember to get some rest in too!
I have to do this for my garage. Replace the back wall and side and the concrete slab adding a couple courses of cinderblock for water prevention since it wasn't done properly the first time around. This video has really helped in my planning. Thanks so much. Love this channel.
i have done this many times to do the jacking use a 4 x6 bean and 4x4 post and get a couple of 4x4 and then use a couple of pump jacks
To rectify mate, you will want to over jack (pre camber) the centre of the existing roof trusses back up, then laminate some additional struts to the top/bottom chords to take that deflection (sag) back out, you need to essentially create new trusses to span across your garage brother, dont forget to add in bottom chord binders/blocking to the trusses!
That was a pretty green door🤔
Nice work sir
Cool that you have a footing . My garage walls 40 footers are on cement pilings that are crooked
Edit: I saw at the end of the video you were told to change it. But I had already made this post.
No matter what ANYONE tells you, eve with a silgasket you should have still used pressure treated lumber on the bottom plate. It’s cheap insurance to prevent rot.
Also - don’t forget to attach your Simpson Roof Ties from your rafters to your double top plate.
Man, what a lot of work! After seeing what a crapshow the old framing was, made me wonder if the slab was even close to level, maybe (optimistically) the guy was trying to compenste for a lifted slab or something. Would love to see how this looks with a laser.
Love it. I’m remodeling my 1972 brick home that my dad owned… it’s almost like the same property. Car parts in the back… cracking load bearing studs. Love it
it takes a lot to confess mess ups to 821,000 people love your work keep it up im looking forward to the next vid
I can't believe you did all of that in 30mins..... in all seriousness, you are a savage, Bro!! What a project! Every minute worked, is a dollar saved... that's what I kept telling myself when I was building my house. Can't wait to see this turn to life. The LIKES are well deserved on this one!
WHY IS WATCHING YOU REPAIR IT IS SO PEACEFUL 🙏🏽😁
After watching videos like this it makes me feel a WHOLE LOT better about the remodeling i need to do to my own home.....cause its not NEARLY as labor intensive, difficult, or expensive as this!
Oh you finally put on some gloves and a dust mask. Well done brother. Gotta make sure you stick around as long as possible for kids and grandkids
I think you had it in reverse. I think the back sections original and the front was added on. That front window was a door ahah
Thank you for documenting this, I have a couple of exterior walls in my shop that I didn't know how I was going to replace. Now, I do.
This is the type of video that makes this channel great!
I've never had so much anxiety watching a RUclips video till now. So much respect watching you raise this roof!
You, sir, are a GOD. Love how honest you are. You are doing an amazing job. Please dont ever stop. I lean so much from you. Thank you
I'll come pick up those dirtbikes and ATV's in the back let me know lol. Good work brother. I'm learning a lot from these videos.
Amazing work, Well Done!!!!
This is awesome! Watching all those ads to support you lol
Lol when you mentioned the inspector said to replace the bottom plate.... was like, "oh no, he didn't use the correct wood," as you built and put it up.
i really hope, this project brings you follower nr. 1.000.000! Greetings from Germany :)
Man, I wish you'd invited viewers to help ala Ann of all Trades. That was a hot mess, and I don't think I could have worked through all the issues, but I have an overwhelming urge to pull trash to the curb for you, that'd be so gratifying. lol.
You bought a project house for sure :)
This is going to be one hell of a shop... Got my Iced tea and is looking forward towards the beginning to finish of this shop series... 💕💕
Hey, I gotta say, after watching this video and knowing the work load involved... it's helped get my ambition up to tackle my garage. It's a 32'x26' with tin roof. It's wired but not insulated or sheeted inside. No concrete floor and as such the footer on my south wall has been walking out. But seeing how you managed to make it all happen, I'm game to make it happen and get the footer squared up again. Thank you!
Wow! This is fun to watch.
That’s the most beautiful wall ever, you did a great job
what a talented guy you are and not scared of hard work! great little series this on your new house.
When he finishes this job…he’ll basically have torn the whole house down and built it back up. Brave man LOL. I might have cried if I bought this as a fixer upper LOL.
You’ll get through it and the value can only go up for you
Been waiting for this. Hopefully the roof will happen safer and quicker.
Keep it up, bud. As long as you learn from the little failures, you're still moving forward.
I do admire your courage to take on this project. And, you've potentially saved tons of money. Is this going to be a BRRRR project?
Looks like you have got a quite a road ahead of you. I'll be here watching and rooting for you! (and maaaaybe sipping a drink)
YOU GOT THIS!!! Incredible work!!
Put a beam down the center of the garage and raise the center of the truss until they're level and then nail some extra bracing with truss plates to hold them there. Should suck the walls back in
Really impressive, good job
Wow! Just wow!!
Yikes - what's a PITA. So much work and mess and money. Killing it!
On the sag - What I think you need to do is jack the center of the ridge beam WHILE using tensioning cables attached every few feet where the walls are bowing. Jack, tension, jack, tension .. repeat - until you have it in a good place. Once you do, install collar ties to secure the rafters together and brace the rafters to exterior walls using strong ties. Oh , and the saying is "Buy once, Cry once". Almost had it!
Reference gregvancom "How To Raise Sagging Roof Ridge" this is an excellent video walkthrough on this exact issue.
I love this series its so intresting!
The amount of physical work you are doing in this video is mind boggling. Your garage is the new HAUS LISELOTTE 💚
Damn man. good job thats a lot of work! Will be cool to see the finishing product
Keep it up man! It's some hard work but it will be worth it in the end!
Wow that was a big job to take on yourself! Nice job to retrofit everything
Honestly impressive!
One of my favorite videos of yours yet! Watching the entire process was so satisfying to see after knowing what you started with. Great job and I look forward to the continued progress!
Mad skills!
Your the Stud Bud!
You make it all look fun and easy..
👊
Having Fun! flipping loving it mate! great content, with you all the way bro!
How have I never noticed this channel before?!? Great video. I look forward to checking out your catalog.
Good work man!
Such a great series. Love the idea of a full reno rather than little bits here and there. Was super satisfying watching the garage come together.
You make it look so easy. Very Impressive
I've loved your videos for years, but this series takes my love to a new level. Dude... I know absolutely NOTHING about construction, but your videos are fascinating to me. I can't wait to see how you transform this house into something perfectly astonishing (as usual). Hang in there -- we're all cheering you on!
I did demolition work while traveling in Australia and it was so hard but satisfying. keep up with the great work you are doing !
Amazing job man. You got it!
I think you will do a beam using the same method that you did with the walls.
Waiting to see your solution.
Awesome work! I am so impressed and I’m learning a lot! Thank you
impressive work, all by yourself. Well done
I've watched a couple of your videos but this series is great! Subcribed!!!
