My family is related to Elias Howe, the Inventor of the Sewing Machine. Elias was an out-of-work machinist who had a dream of the spear-like needle...told his wife he could make the machine that would speed up the work many women & girls did at home to survive - cottage industry sewing. Mrs. Howe cautioned Elias that a machine would put many of those ladies out of work...
Sadly, Elias Howe & Isaac Singer were involved in a bitter, many years long Patent Dispute; most of Mr. Howe's money went to pay expensive Lawyer's Fees!& Mrs.Howe died before she saw her husband's victory.
I first began to quilt using the, "Quilt as You Go" hand piecing & hand quilting method...later bought a BROTHER Sewing Machine to try machine quilting;. but send my quilts out to a local shop for long-arm machine quilting. I still prefer making quilts by hand, more calming, portable & no trouble with machine!

Please, discontinue the story of the underground railroad quilt blocks. It has been academically proven to not be true!
