If you have any questions on this subject, please leave them in the comments below and we will try to answer them all!
Yes! More women specific content please! Doing my first race I put a question out on what should I wear. A bunch of guys replied just wear a bathing suit or shorts and a shirt but it’s more complicated and I definitely needed a sports bra under. Could you expand more on which sports bras are best for tri?
Hi Meghan, you're right, it isn't easy to know what to wear and there are so many options like I mentioned. With running involved finding the right sports bra is certainly important but it is so individual. Look for something that still works well when wet and won't get too heavy and soggy. Also be aware of rub points. Let us know when you find one that works for you.
When I did my first triathlon a long time ago, I kept my bike shorts on for the entire race, then I just wore my sports bra for the swim (non-padded & high support). I had a small towel on top of my bike to squeeze out the water from my hair (it was very long at the time) and put on a bike jersey for the rest of the race.
But a trisuit made things less complicated.
@@kwong6884 I can imagine running in wet cycle shorts to be a little uncomfortable!
Heather Fell the wet shorts dry up quickly!
I swear by a sports bra by a brand called 'Anita' and their Active Extreme Control bras. It's comfortable, dries quickly after the swim leg and is super supportive. It's expensive, but worth it.
I've only been competing in Tri for a couple years, but the female-specific tips I'll stand by are:
• hairstyle: 2 braids brought into 1 at the bottom of the head (hopefully that makes sense). has the security of 2 braids but won't bounce in front of your shoulders when you're on the run
• menstrual cups: on top of being way more environmentally sustainable and economical, I've found that they stay put and are much less worrisome overall than tampons
Mooncup = lifesaver and just heard about period pants. None of it applies to me anymore but how fantastic for the younger crowd
Interested in learning more about "busty women" triathlon needs (sports bra recommendations, appropriate garb, etc)
Yes! I’m a DD and that Orca bra would do nothing for me. 😂😂
Hands down GTNs best presenter !!
Great to see you're talking about what differentiates us women in our male-dominated sports. In the menstrual cycle video, could you please talk give a mention to menstrual cups (life-changing for triathlon and any sports, in my opinion)? Would also be a bonus if you could address how physiology changes with the menstrual cycle and should be used for optimal training (see Stacy Sim's book 'Roar' - perhaps she could be interviewed?).
Hi Emilie, Thank you for your comments, I will look into menstrual cups. I have been doing some research on the hormone changes throughout the cycle so keep an eye out for that.
And also the option to use birth control so you don't get a period near race day. I've been using the Nuvo ring & piggyback it because I have severe social anxiety that interferes with training and my period makes it worse.
I went in to discuss getting the injection (no period for several months) but my doctor said that can cause weight gain and worsen depession.
@@Tri_AgainProject There are a lot of options but we are all different so no one rule suits all.
@@heatherfell_oly yes, I understand that, but it helps to let women know of the options available to help them get though their periods. Some women don't even realize it's an option to not have a period if they're training for an important race. Not talking "rules" but options.
I love seeing more women-specific content on GTN. I would also like to see suggestions to how triathlons can be made more accessible for people of color.
How are they inaccessible?
@@richardp4292 No one suggested triathlons are inaccessible for the above populations. Wanting to increase accessibility is not predicated on inaccessibility, instead, it recognizes the potential for creating more opportunities and encourages that growth.
As I have smaller boobs (B cup) I'm able to get away with just a sports bikini top underneath my Tri-suit. And with hair, I really struggled finding a way to wear that didn't look stupid on me. I went with double dutch or French braids. But for the swim I got another hair tie and tied it into a little bun at the nape of my neck to fit under my cap easier without having to stuff the braids in. And then when I'm running through transition I just pull it out and let the braids sit and then can dry during the cycle and run :)
Thanks for your tips too, it is all so individual finding what works for you.
Excelente que tenga subtítulos en español. Excelentes tips!
My budding triathlon career is taking place 100% post menopause. I feel like I'm getting away with something!
Me too, my first one is in a few months. I'm 64. Did you wear a tri suit? And if so what did you wear underneath?
Excelente trucos; en definitiva probar todo antes de la carrera . Please your periods tips
I figured out the two braid is the best option for my fro. I'm not sure what's going to happen when it gets as big as Diana Ross'. Finding a swim cap that fits will be a nightmare!
I know that finding large swim hats can be a problem at races. If you find one that fits you it is worth speaking to the race organisers and see if they'll allow you to wear your own if you prove the race hat doesn't fit.
@@heatherfell_oly I'm doing my first Half Ironman in Asia this year, let's see how that goes! I'm hopeful they will allow it because race cap rarely fit, they usually slide off.
@@paulinejoseph132 Good luck!
I like to do the 2-braid too (my fro is pretty big, but it hasn't quite reached Diana Ross heights)! While I haven't tried it, a tri friend of mine recommended this hair & ear guard to wear under your swim cap. It helps keep bigger hair under swim caps & dry!

Could you please make a video for the best hair styles on bike for people with long hair? I have 35+ centimetres of hair and sometimes I get bored with the same style, needless to say that once my helmet is on i never take it because I cannot fix my hair again with sweaty hands
THanks, perfect timing for me!
🤣🤣🤣 It’s not about how much support I want, but how much support I NEED! I have a bra called Triaction and am a 32E! Fingers crossed it is good when it is wet!
Top top channel!!! and official Heather fan!! :)
Thank you Toni!
Heather Fell 😍 top top!!!
So I have a few questions but I’d rather not put them up for public display, where can I ask questions if I’m shy?

Excited to see the video re Period :D
We're looking forward to it too - stay tuned!
Let us know any specific questions you might have.
Me too!! This topic comes up all the time in my training group... would love to know about whether training needs to be adjusted on heavy days when you just feel sore all over... or do you ignore it and get on.
@2:59 Recent studies show that Women do not have longer torsos for a given height. That was old marketing data (not scientific) that was used by bike manufacturers in the past.
About periods and so, what about amenorrhea? When I'm in my peak I lose my period, I dunno how other athletes deal with it, my % of fat goes really low when Im training, how do u girls balance that? Thanks, Hugs! Great job GTN team, thanks so much!
Thanks Greta, we're hoping to cover it too in our next women's episode 👍 Thanks for the support.
Yes as GTN mentioned we will be doing a video looking at the menstrual cycle so hope to answer more questions around it then.
Why is that some women suits have an open back suit and men don't have one? Doesn't the open back suit have more comfort when curving you back?
I am not finding a proper female trisuit wd proper support. I am frm india , searchd AliExpress.. still not satisfied.. any other online link can nebody share for female trisuit
Have you tried to use a sports bra underneath instead of relying on the support of a tri suit? I personally would find a tri suit without support and get separate top for underneath.
Who else is a male watching this?
There's info for all I hope. And long hair is not exclusive to women too. Please share with anyone you think this could help.
I did
here
Moob support is no joke guys.
and why not? shouldn't you be educated enough to be able to answer questions for other people?
Wait what? You dont wear anything underneath the shorts????
That's right! Give it a go and we're sure you'll be converted.
Yup, get the right shorts and you'll wish you had tried it sooner.
Fine to eschew the underwear for a triathlon race, but generally I have never understood going knickerless for cycling. Especially for commuting or touring it just means shorts have to be washed very often, and it’s not comfortable. Snug fitting seamless knickers are helpful, however.
Julia Hargreaves if you are wearing Bike shorts with a chamois then these need to go without underwear. Going longer distances will get very uncomfortable.

How about Make up? :)
Great point - do you have a specific question?
I did't think about that but waterproof mascara is pretty good!
How maintain your make up so that it's not all over your face... Any products recommended that don't usually smear especially after the swim leg.. Haha!!
@@catherineacuna1244 I currently use L'Oreal waterproof mascara and it has lasted even a full ironman!
@@heatherfell_oly wooooow! Will look for that.. Well just want to look fab even though I'm dying inside.. Haha
My girlfriend experiences discomfort on her private part area on long rides. We were wondering what other women were doing to alleviate that.
Adrian she needs to look at her position on the bike as well as finding the correct saddle. It is certainly worth investing in both as she should not experience discomfort on long rides.
bike fit + new saddle (I'm loving the new specialized mimic) + different shorts . It takes a while to find the perfect combo
It's amazing how much of a difference the right saddle can make. Definitely take a look at the GCN video on choosing the right one.
Bike fit by a sport med physiotherapist :)
Some bike fitters will say to "just ride more" so your body gets accustomed to the set up becaure biomechanically it's correct, but a sports med physiotherapist bike fitter will know how to fit taking into acoount past & present injuries and imbalances.
*Guys watching with baited breaths*
Hope there's still something for everyone, and do share with female triathletes you know.
I will for sure, @@heatherfell_oly!
