‘What About Black Lives?’ takes us directly and powerfully into the epicenter of the profound racial divide tearing apart the world. Dan recalls as a teenager in the ’60s, the deep alienation of being an outsider, as a child of a bi-racial family, in conservative, totally white and decidedly waspy Toronto.
Dan’s father, an esteemed and published Black historian, rose to fame while publicly and successfully fighting systemic racism and prejudice of all kinds. Dan’s Grandfather, Daniel Grafton Hill Jr, a Ph. D wielding theology professor at Howard University, frequently had Martin Luther King Jr. speak to his classes. Dan’s grandfather and Dr. King corresponded regularly. Dan Hill’s family background, juxtaposed with his own, consistent battles with racism and prejudice, resulted in Dan constantly, through his song-writing, book writing, and published articles, tackling the confounding issues of racism directly. In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, Dan was asked to comment, post on Facebook, his response to centuries of the police genocide of innocent Black people. In response, reluctant to post a comment that could be perceived as lecturing, self-righteous and judgemental, Dan instead, wrote ‘What About Black Lives?’, carefully positioning his song as a question, a heartfelt plea, a way of reaching out to the world, seeking connection, answers, solutions, and, ultimately compassion, in the wake of the the world’s 400-year history of profoundly systemic racial divide and crippling discrimination.Dan's single, 'What About Black Lives' was released, worldwide on November 20/2020
