3 things I like about Michael in this film is what he teaches Vincent like Vito would've 1. Never hate your enemies it clouds your judgment 2. Shut up, don't ever let anyone know what you're thinking 3. You have to respect Zaza for what he did it was a brilliant move it was the young pushing out the old.
I liked it too. The relationship between Sonny's son and Michael's daughter (forgot their names)disgusted me. I mean, damn, they were first cousins. They could at least made them 5th or 6th cousins. Lol
Ironically, it was Godfather 3 that got me into the Godfather series. I first watched this from a young age. Then when I looked Godfather 1 &2, I started disliking 3 a whole lot more. But taking a critical look at 3 will make me appreciate the film a bit more. I really wish Robert Duval played Tom Hagen in the this one. The lawyer Michael had was not as innovative and smart as Tom. Tom always did some digging and research. The lawyer Michael had was just a "mouth-piece". But looking into the plot of Immobiliare, it could have been better fleshed out and with Tom in the mix, it could have present Michael with a dilemma: when Tom does his research into the corporation, he could have found that it was controlled by the old rank and file mafia in Sicily and Tom advises not to go into it. Michael disagrees and not only tries to make the deal but to take it over. Hear, Tom is put in a difficult position of protecting Michael his brother or protect his Don in which he feels he can no longer do. At the end of the movie, it is Tom that gets shot while trying to protect Michael. This would either make Michael a cold Don or break him as his last brother is now dead. Well, it is just an idea. Anyways, great review, looking forward to more!!!
Robert duvall is a boss. But how would Michael end the movie dancing with the 3 women in his life: Mary, Apollonia, Kay if Tom had died instead? Maybe go back and forth in time dancing at his wedding with Apollonia, then to the future dancing with Mary at her own wedding?
I truly loved the introduction of García in the movie; he played the hot headed nephew brilliantly. For me the movie drowned afterwards into drama and emotions..i guess we had no problem seeing Pacino get weak but expected him to recover and outsmart his enemies in the end.
I expected Michael to recover and outsmart his enemies, yes. After all his work to “get there” and return to who he originally was, and mopes are left to benefit? I didn’t like Connie in Parts I and II and that didn’t change in III - and Sofia was dreadful. Ok I simply liked nothing about it and Pacino’s hair looked like a guy who couldn’t afford a decent barber
Absolutely agreed, fren. The actor nailed his role as Sonnys boy. I really felt it in him and the movie was a disservice in a lot of ways but he wasn’t one of them.
Thank you. I’ve been waiting for Godfather 3 videos. I actually enjoy the movie. No, it’s not as good as the first two, but it does have a lot to offer. I just wish Tom Hagen could have been it.
I started watching this movie but as soon as Sofia Coppola appeared with her amateurish acting, it threw me completely out of the movie. It felt like Coppola had compromised the movie just to give a career to his daughter. I just couldn't get myself to watch the movie after that.
I appreciate the dedication to very classic movies, but do enjoy coverage of Godfather 3 even if I personally don't like it. As a writer I've taken a lot of good points from this channel and enjoyed the analysis, thanks.
I truly like III. I only had two things. Those are significant only because I had no complaints with I and II. 1) Sophia Coppola. Her acting was painful to watch. 2) Michael's hair. The original stylist of I and II left III because of an argument with Coppola over Michael's hair. He was right.
Now i can understand more the third movie. Been holding out on watching because i didn't understand the plot. Now with this video and the other ones that are to come out i can watch the movie without being lost 💯
This was an absolute fantastic movie from start to finish, all the characters with their individual, mostly unbeknownst positions within the "family business" known to each other was perfectly delivered, excellent delivery of a complex multifaceted family. Beautiful x
Thanks for bringing this to our attention I like The Godfather 3 the same as I like the first two and think the third one is underrated and shouldn’t get the disrespect it is getting.
If Godfather 3 had the the images /flashbacks injected like you do during major points , it would’ve been much better and more connected with the original 2!
Not many, just enough for the story to go along. But part 3 should have been it’s own thing and it failed on many things. The meeting and the helicopter scene is a joke, something out of action movie. Didn’t fit.
Actually Godfather III is my favourite because the life of Michael was represented more realistically unlike the two movies before. Michael had to face the biggest obstacle and suffer the most painful lost. To me, it completed Michael’s Character in the trilogy.
Godfather 3 was a brilliant movie. People didn't really understand it because of its exposing of the illuminati powers and it's connection with catholic church.
Only thing I found confusing and inconsistent in Part III was the complete change of character of Michael. Michael who had been a cold distant calculating ruthless man with an explosive anger, suddenly transformed into a charming funny easy going warm old man in the last movie. Yes old age mellows a person, but it would be nice to see this giant transformation of the central character of the overall story, especially since he became the darkest soulless cold scary psychopath by the end of the second movie. Just watch the end of Part 2, and then the opening of part 3 where old Michael socializing and making jokes at the party, and thy are like two different people. And how he flirts with Kay is really unbelievable; those two people hated each other so much at the end of senod movie, they would never come together, or remember the past with rose colour glasses. They could never ever forgive each other.
Some folks still perceive the Immobilaire bit fell through. Michael did obtain immobiliare his lawyer confirmed that the new pope ratified the deal during the opera scene, this was prior to the pope dying so he did get it done, just never got to enjoy the spoils lol
Immobiliare is basically a stand-in for the Italian company Società Generale Immobiliare. Michael's purchase of Immobiliare is basically a stand-in for the purchase of Società Generale Immobiliare by the American Company Gulf+Western around 1970. The irony is that the studio that financed the Godfather movies was owned by Gulf+Western. Gulf+Western was run by Charles Bluhdorn. What Charles Bluhdorn did with Società Generale Immobiliare was inflate the value of its real estate to cover up losses at his other companies. Società Generale Immobiliare was tied up in a whole bunch of banking scandals over many years both with the Vatican, the Europe and the United States. Where the godfather III goes wrong in terms of the real-world story is in making Michael into some kind of victim. The real-life michael (Charles Bluhdorn) was no victim in the deal. He was an arch crook. The real-world story that Godfather III is based on runs from the late 1960s to at least 1978.
I’m one of the few that actually enjoyed part 3 but it’s just misunderstood in most parts for a few different reasons, I guess the story could’ve been executed differently with a few parts changed that could’ve made it more enjoyable to a wider audience. One thing I always wanted to know that even with immobiliare which would’ve made Michael extremely wealthy due to real estate prices going up would he have also made money like a landlord and earn rents? Cause immobiliare was worth billions with all the real estate he had so I’m sure a good chunk of that was land with either living occupants and maybe even businesses paying rent for offices and land as well
Licio Lucchessi is inspired by a man, who at the time of the Vatican Bank shenanigans, was the Prime Minister of Italy! 3 clues: the line, "he who builds on the people, builds on mud"; the uniformed police escorts; the horn-rimmed glasses (ironic, considering Lucchessi's final fate).
I really appreciate your understanding and insite on the movies and books of "The Godfather." Your passion and love for these mythos is obvious by the way you describe your perspective and your understanding of these great fiction and perhaps somewhat nonfiction stories. And I look forward to more of your insightful comtent; Brilliant Bro
I personally think most people didn’t enjoy the third because it actually shows the consequences of Don Vito’s actions long after he was gone and for Michael the torment of his brother demise is a constant theme.
In an interview Francis for Coppola said the 30th year anniversary version of this movie is the one to watch, he said he went back and re edited the whole thing and he’s much happier with that version
People Constantly say that...I on the other hand, think it's a damn good movie ! Don't forget it was nominated for BEST PICTURE !!! Connie was a show stopper...and the Opera House scene alone for me, puts it in GOOD STANDING. It's not 1 or 2 but damn...what is !
Main problems I have with part 3. 1. Sofia as Mary was terrible, especially her scene with Pacino on the rooftop, she didn’t know what she was doing. Sofia didn’t have acting experience. Winona Ryder would have made a better choice, and I’m still mad at her for not being in the movie. 2. The meeting helicopter scene didn’t not fit in a Godfather film. It was something out of an action movie. 3. George Hamilton didn’t fit either, Robert Duvall was needed in the movie but paramount didn’t want to pay him. 4. They made Connie and Kay look too old, they were still good looking women and they made them look like grandmas even though their characters were in their 50’s. 5. They should have done more New York scenes but they out too much time in Sicily and the opera. Overall a disappointment movie. I understand to make Michael legit business man but why still have him in mafia meetings then. Story doesn’t make much sense.
I agree with all but especially #1. I hate it when these Hollywood people cast their relatives to give them a start. Sofia ruined the movie. I can stop there.
*"I understand to make Michael legit business man but why still have him in mafia meetings then"* That is actually the point, it is very difficult for someone of status within the criminal underworld to disentangle from it, and there are no formal process to do so. It's a not uncommon plot point for many crime story, a gradual process that requires great care and a period of weakness where your enemy can get at you.
I rather enjoyed the George Hamilton character. His presence made an impression the family was moving in a different direction. He was strictly by-the-book, and no sleaze-ball conniving tricks like framing a senator for murder (even thought the senator was a sleaze-ball himself).
Sofia did all right; Ryder had issues back then. Hamilton was pretty good but Duvall needed to be in the movie! Connie could have been shown more; especially her new personality!
Here's the thing. In the late 1970s/ early 1980s I became very interested in the recent history of the Vatican (anyone alive at the time couldn't escape the reportage of the financial scandals/ P2 / Assassination of Pope John Paul I). So, when I first watched The Godfather 3, I was completely aware of what was going on with the Vatican side of the plot. I didn't then, nor do I now relate to the criticism of the plotline, as I was au fait with the background that was used. Just to give you a parallel - I'm a Dubliner (Ireland). When the movie "The Commitments" was released in the United States, there were moves to subtitle this English language, Dublin accented movie. As a Dubliner, this seemed silly to me, because I would never need such subtitling. Similarly with Godfather 3. As someone familiar with the Vatican Scandals of the period in question, I didn't need any long exposition. Clearly many movie goers did...
At 5:01, "But what Michael is really seeking is redemption". Reminds me of what an old priest told me decades ago. He told me to give myself over to God while I am young. That way, I won't be crawling back to Him when I am old.
My only real issue with the third movie, but it's a movie killing issue, is that it is redundant. We ultimately see and learn nothing new. Think about the ending of the second movie. Now think about the ending of the third movie. Isn't Michael's position and fate the same? He's sees yet another close family member dead due to the Corleone family's criminal existence. The third movie has a lot going on but it's all just busy work. Pieces get shuffled around but to no apparent purpose in terms of advancing the characters or their story. If all you wanted is more Godfather material it's fine, but it doesn't tell you anything about the nature of their futures that you couldn't guess from what you saw in the first two movies.
In my opinion the 3rd film is the best because of the story, here's why; Michaels flashback during the song of his son, Michaels confessions to the priest, the death of his daughter (although the acting is't great on that scene, it completes the first movie where Vito swears on his grandchildren that he wouldn't hurt the other family bosses, but this scene proves he díd set it up). I like it too that they made the subjects bigger, like even the church is involved so it proves that power is corrupting even on the holy people. and last, the death scene of Michael, with that music, the house where he and Apolonia were back in the days and no one else to notice him dying but a dog (to great contrast of Vito)
Only thing sadder then a powerful old man looking for redemption in his winter years is a one who ait. The first at least you can see that there are still traces of humanity. Even tho it is probably a exercise in futility in Micheal case beacuse after decades of being up to his eye balls in the corsive elements of the stuff When it makes It's final call to a person like Michael It comes dressed up in all the dreadful ways it was wielded. Hence the reason he had different end to his father at that house where if things were different he would have being a different man. Still believe if his ex wife was not killed it would have ended naturally between them and on good terms beacuse his path was set for him already giving us a less destructive man he had the intelligence training and stamina to outmaneuver anything or anybody put in front of him in that world that he was born into but It would have being less bloody and ferocious. Italian's really do tell the tale of both sides of the coin well. It really shows who is fresh on the block and who ait.
My biggest problem with G3 was that it leaned too heavily on the success of the previous two movies, reusing all the devices and scenes that worked for those. I found it to be more of a trip of nostalgia, than a unique story unto itself. Also, after the casino massacre, "Zasa, you son of a b!tch" was just so lame and cringy.
GF3 is a perfect way to end a trilogy, bring the story around 360 degrees! The most notable line in the trilogy is in GF3, it's a changing of the guard & promises trying to b kept......truly a masterpiece!!!!
The ending of the movie is brilliant. The flashbacks of him dancing with the three women who drove him into that path, a path inevitably led to their loss. He gave everything for them, and ended up in nothing.
Great video and thank you Sooooo much for making it. I had asked you too a couple of months ago to explain Imobillarie and what type of company they were and you did. Again Thank you.
@@TheCultureMafia How could I not ? You put out some of the Best, Informative and Deep Videos that explain ( IMHO ) One of, If not the Greatest Trilogies in Cinematic History.
@@TheCultureMafia Would you make a video about all the smaller families: Forlenza, Molinari, etc.? Some non-canon books said the bosses of those families would be taken out by Michael for scheming against him so I think it’s interesting enough to talk about.
All of this was based on Real World events in the Vatican. Immobiliare was based on SGI a multinational real estate company, which, at the time of the Watergate break-in OWNED the Watergate complex. The Swiss Banker was closely based on Roberto Calvi, an Italian Banker and "associate" of both the P2 Masonic Lodge and the Italian Mafia. He was also known as "God's Banker". (The actor who plays the "Swiss Banker" looks awfully like Calvi!) The senior figures in the real world were Michele Sindona, a Banker and real life member of the Gambino Crime family and Licio Gelli, the leader of the P2 Masonic lodge. None of what Calvi, Gelli or Sindona accomplished would have been possible without the assistance of Bishop (later Archbishop) Paul Marcinkus, US born head of the Vatican Bank. I hope in later videos on tis topic, these Real World parallels are made clear.
I love #3! 🙄 I just hate the ending where Mary gets killed! It makes me cry too much! She was a genius touch to the film also being cappola’s actual daughter…. 🥰 I love a 3 films!
Great video as always but how did no one understand this movie??? I got this the first time I seen it. I think everyone wanted more killing instead of a story line
Thank you sir and this channel alot of people shit on gf 3 but I all ways look back at nd its jewels in it so thank once again for the breakdown and getting in depth of this movie
Apollonia being killed is what screwed up the whole godfather story, had she never got in the car or started it when Michael noticed Fabrizio was acting up... it's more likely that upon returning to America, Michael would never have had Gredo
killed, would never have been stressed out by Kate and would have made bigger power moves much better and more powerful so even Tessio and Clemenza would have stayed more loyal to Michael and Vito would have healed his wounds much better cause Kate pretty much cursed the Corleone family.
G3 shows the price Michael had to pay for his acquisition and maintenance of his power. His daughter was murdered. In the end, Michael could not protect his family from "the horrors of this world". Michael never understood he was one of these horrors.
One of my biggest issues with this movie is...I believe Al Pacino had lost or forgotten Michael's character. Al was way too animated, and vocal, almost even crude playing this version of Michael. Whereas in the first two films, Michael was tacit, tactile, and extremely balanced. That for me was the essence of Michael, not the animated, almost cartoonish version.
Al Pacino himself has gone on record as saying that he would've liked to have redone that performance, because he "didn't understand at the time" what Michael would be like at that age until he, himself, got older and understood how to have played an older Michael better.
@@josephadorno92 I didn’t know that. Makes a ton of sense though. Maybe it’s me…but Al Pacino’s acting style took a drastic turn right after Scarface. He went from a methodical, intricate actor (Serpico, Panic in Needle Park, Author Author, And Justice For All) to an exceedingly animated style. I understand the Tony Montana character had to be larger than life to work on screen, but maybe it’s me….but all his work since Scarface has very heavy Montana imprints on them…..so I chalk up the misinterpretation of Michael in GF3 to that.
@@mikehammer1777 "Sea of Love", "Frankie and Johnny", "Glengarry Glenross", "Heat", "The Merchant of Venice", "Looking For Richard" and "Donnie Brasco" all offer good latter-day performances from Al Pacino that show he can rise to the occasion and offer unexpected and different performances from his 70's films.
I saw part III as the first of the three and with _zero_ prior knowledge of the saga. Just people said, yeah, Pacino is famous and the prior parts, too, lets go to the cinema ... that was 30 years ago. And I am still confused about the story. Don't know if that was intended ... after all a bunch of mafioso trench wars where most of them get killed. Beautifully filmed, yes. But the story remains strange. To me at least.
I didn't have any problem with the Godfather 3.i saw it at the cinema when it came out and understood it perfectly and where it fits into the trilogy. The worse thing about it clearly was Sofía Coppola's acting but the rest of the cast did fine.
Honestly, I rewatched it recently, and I can accept her bad acting. She did the best she could. The 3rd Godfather is the worst, only because there had to be a bad one.
Absolutely. When Mary was killed, that was a powerful tear jerker for me. Also pretty awesome when that guy killed the other one with his Eyeglasses!!!!
What is often overlooked is the music. Nino Rota wrote one of films's great scores for the first two Godfathers. A good part of the positive feel we have for the Corleone family is thanks to Rota's emotional music. Rota died in 1979 In G-3 Rota's music is poorly re-used and aranged, lesser music added, and even Mascagni's time tested masterpiece, Cavalleria, is not used at all well dramatically. That's what happens when you cast your daughter and hire your father. The less said about script, pacing, acting, direction, casting - the better. Inspiration cannot be bought.Coppola said. “Frankly, I needed the money,… NY Times, Dec. 2, 2020
@@TheCultureMafia Can you imagine a Fellini film with Rota's music? Or Spielberg without John Williams? E.T.? Even Spielberg says the music saves the film
I liked it. First two are masterpieces. Three is a good movie tho. Thought Sophie Copolla was quite good in it to. It's not perfect but the moment on the steps is a great ending.
The thing is, he didnt heed what Vito said near the end, of the first film. "I work my whole life - I don't apologize - to take care of my family, and I refused to be a fool, dancing on the string held by all those bigshots. I don't apologize - that's my life" Vito never sought redemption for himself, he owned everything he did and accepted whatever judgement awaited him in the next life. What Vito did want, was a better future for his family. For Michael to be the first to emerge untainted by all of Vito's actions. Michael should have strived for the same thing. He wanted to leave the life and still be a powerful man. But what he should have aimed for was to allow the criminal empire his family had to die with him and whatever remained to be left to those who were content to stay in that life. Meanwhile, his children would be free of it. He should have made sure they would have the chance his father gave him but lost because of the whole Solozzo thing that started the domino effect.
Coda somehow restores G3's rep. Its obviously still not on par with the first 2,but a worthy entry in an almost perfect trilogy. Still don't ge the cousin love or why it's important to the plot.
The film was weekend significantly by the absence of Duval and and the addition of Sofia Coppola. I don't think Pacino's heart was really in it either.
@04:43 - I've seen this before. When a movie shows the viewer a newspaper headline, they never think of making the movie more realistic by having someone actually write a few sentences that would support the headline. If you pause the video here, you will see that the article was copied and pasted from some beginner computer course. In addition, the typeface used "Immobiliare Takeover Appears Likely..." is not the same one as on the rest of the paper. And this cheapens the movie by a lot. They'll spend millions on props, but they skimp on something so simple and cheap, that it takes what little credibility was left, from the movie.
I do too. I can’t understand the Sophia bashing of some people. So she wasn’t an actress. They all don’t have to be Katherine Hepburn! Sophia was convincing enough.
Church controlled 25% of a company worth a total of 6 bilion dollar. Church's share was actually worth 1.5 bilion, but Michael was buying it for 600 million dollar. Now that's predatory
Don Vito said to Michael he wanted him not to be a mafioso but a senator, a governor... someone in the legitmate world, but there wasn't enough time. Michael answers-"We'll get there." When reuniting with Kay in part 1 and early in part 2 he keeps saying his business will be legitimate soon, Immobiliare is Michael finally accomplishing his objective, only to find out the game here is even more dangerous than running a casino.
For starters, having it without Tom Hagen was a big minus right there. Having Vincent, the illegitimate son of Santino that comes in from out of nowhere in the previous storyline go from street muscle guy to the Don was too much of a stretch. Zaza's character is nowhere near as menacing as say Sollozo was, almost came off as buffoonish. Kay's part in the film could have been completely removed altogether and nobody would have missed her. And as for the whole Immobilare / Vatican part of the story, it wasn't that it was too complex to understand, it was just boring. It also seemed strange that Altobello and Lucchesi accepted Vincent as an instant turncoat without an ounce of suspision. It's what happens when a film is made out of personal financial necessity on Coppala's part.
I feel like Godfather 3 and Rocky V are in the same boat of “bad film with great potential”, which makes it more infuriating than just a bad film. That being said, I do believe there are great moments in this movie. It’s just surrounded by stuff that ruins the movie.
#3 is my favorite! It's also important as Michael tries to go legitimate only to find out it becomes more crooked. Also it sets it up nice for Andy Garcia to become Godfather. I'm still waiting for #4.
Reminds me of the scene from the Sopranos when Paulie assumed that his donations to his church was "supposed to keep me immune from all dis sh*t". 😆 that's like bribing G-d for murder, theft, the 10 commandments etc. 😇😄
I had to pause because I laughed too hard at "The Godfather 3 is unfortunately known as the 'Fredo' of the Godfather trilogy". Now I'll watch the rest of the video
Michael Corleone in this film is a symbol for the film and Coppola's career. Throughout the whole film he is seeking redemption, trying to overcome the hatred and negative preconceived notions people have for him, just the way the film has become hated without cause.
I hate it when people poop on GFIII. Coppola himself said from the beginning that the film was intended to be an epilogue to the saga, and to be viewed as such. I've always looked at it that way, too. Even he knew that coming up with something that could match the true brilliance of the first 2 would be a tall order. He took a lot of criticism when he cast Sophia as Mary, but Winona Ryder had dropped out. Most folks know that Duvall wanted more of a cut than they were offering him, so he bailed. It's a shame that he had to be written out. They could have could have written into the script that with the Family moving into more legitimate business, Hagen was a tie to the old mob world and was gradually pushed out in favor slick Wall Street types. (George Hamilton fits that bill.) It wound up being a big mistake for the Family, as Hagens advice would have surely cautioned Michael about his blind obsession with legitimacy. Bringing Eli Wallach's Character into the mix was a bit puzzling.....who the hell is this guy? He was never mentioned in 1 or 2. It was just kinda weird. He's always gonna be "Tuco" to me, anyway..."Hey Blondie!" Yep, I'm old. I saw GF1 with my parents at the drive-in when it first came out in '72. Since then, as with many others, I love anything having to do with The Godfather, even GFIII, and would LOVE to see Andy Garcia as Don Vincente Corlene in GFIV. (Come on, you'd love to see that too!)
I loved Godfather III, and think everyone who hated it doesn’t understand the significance of it. It was DEEP. People just don’t like new things and by the time it came out, too much time had passed.
Godfather 1 Enemies: people away from the law (gangsters)
Godfather 2 Enemies: People who are the law (senators, presidents)
Godfather 3 Enemies: People above the law (the church)
"The higher I get in the legitimate word, the more corrupt." How well put by Michael to Connie.

2. Shut up, don't ever let anyone know what you're thinking
3. You have to respect Zaza for what he did it was a brilliant move it was the young pushing out the old.
Definitely. These are the same lessons that Don Vito tried to teach Sonny.
That was stupid move

Ironically, it was Godfather 3 that got me into the Godfather series. I first watched this from a young age. Then when I looked Godfather 1 &2, I started disliking 3 a whole lot more. But taking a critical look at 3 will make me appreciate the film a bit more. I really wish Robert Duval played Tom Hagen in the this one. At the end of the movie, it is Tom that gets shot while trying to protect Michael. This would either make Michael a cold Don or break him as his last brother is now dead. Well, it is just an idea. Anyways, great review, looking forward to more!!!
The new lawyer had a different role than Tom but i agree.
I think the critics are the ones pushing the thought that #3 was a bust. I loved it
I agree Tom always did his homework and could have warned Michael about the deal not being above board as it looked. I wish Tom had been in this movie
Really , why ?
Robert duvall is a boss. But how would Michael end the movie dancing with the 3 women in his life: Mary, Apollonia, Kay if Tom had died instead? Maybe go back and forth in time dancing at his wedding with Apollonia, then to the future dancing with Mary at her own wedding?
I truly loved the introduction of García in the movie; he played the hot headed nephew brilliantly. For me the movie drowned afterwards into drama and emotions..i guess we had no problem seeing Pacino get weak but expected him to recover and outsmart his enemies in the end.
Loved the idea of a bastard child
I expected Michael to recover and outsmart his enemies, yes. After all his work to “get there” and return to who he originally was, and mopes are left to benefit?

He was definitely great until the end when he shouts MARY !! NO!! He sounded so unemotional over her death.
Thank you. I’ve been waiting for Godfather 3 videos. I actually enjoy the movie. No, it’s not as good as the first two, but it does have a lot to offer. I just wish Tom Hagen could have been it.
Mr. Robert Duvall is competent actor as well .
I just think it's like many people who have a great first half of a professional life, but in the end it all falls apart, just like in the plot.
If the studio paid them better than what the actors were actually paid, he would have been in the movie.
Yep I refuse to join in the G3 bashing, too.
I agree that G3 was enjoyable. I think Ms Coppola did a convincing job.
She did a fine job idk why people say she wasn't a good actor
@@Kakashi1isjskks For real. She looks like a real Italian girl and acted like a normal teenager.
Beautiful x
What drugs are you on?
You are absolutely right. G3 is a gem in its own right. And the “silent scream” is an awesome ender!
I agree with you. More if you know the true story about Vatican and mafia. With the freemasonry of corse. P2 ETC... VERY GOOD MOVIE, underatted.
Three was just a wasted film. 1/2 classics and will fit ever be. Three Judy didn’t have punch of the first two
Thanks for doing these. I completely agree: Part 3 had brilliant story ideas, they just weren't executed well.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention I like The Godfather 3 the same as I like the first two and think the third one is underrated and shouldn’t get the disrespect it is getting.
Sophia was just a bad choice for the role.
The idea of a Bastardo , like Vincent being a head of family is out of place .
Absolutely right. G3 was just going over familiar themes from the first 2. But still an excellent movie. So sad when Mary stops one at the end.
💯👍
If Godfather 3 had the the images /flashbacks injected like you do during major points , it would’ve been much better and more connected with the original 2!
Not many, just enough for the story to go along.
But part 3 should have been it’s own thing and it failed on many things.
The meeting and the helicopter scene is a joke, something out of action movie. Didn’t fit.
@@josecarranza7555 THE HELICOPTER HIT, WAS ABOUT TO SHOW US THE POWER OF MICHAEL'S NEW ENEMIES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dave Cornblum, agreed! I would've understood G3 much better.
@@ΑλέξανδροςΓκίνης-ο9σ
The helicopter hit was ridiculously comical!! "My lucky coat, my lucky coat!!" 😂
Apart from having a very sad ending I think this was a great movie too. Unfortunately there was never the Godfather IV
I totally agree, that for me is the reason I abhor this film.
This is how I felt too, last time I watched it I just couldn’t accept the movie as a continuation of where Part II ended
Some folks still perceive the Immobilaire bit fell through. Michael did obtain immobiliare his lawyer confirmed that the new pope ratified the deal during the opera scene, this was prior to the pope dying so he did get it done, just never got to enjoy the spoils lol
Great video! Would you do another one, comparing the events from GF3 to the actual 'Banco Ambrosiano' scandal?
Thank you for this video.
I got nostalgic for The Godfather 3 Immobiliare scenes all the sudden.
Cause immobiliare was worth billions with all the real estate he had so I’m sure a good chunk of that was land with either living occupants and maybe even businesses paying rent for offices and land as well
Most people don't know that the plot of G III is based on very TRUE events.
Continental bank, a Coppola was on the board
Licio Lucchessi is inspired by a man, who at the time of the Vatican Bank shenanigans, was the Prime Minister of Italy! 3 clues: the line, "he who builds on the people, builds on mud"; the uniformed police escorts; the horn-rimmed glasses (ironic, considering Lucchessi's final fate).
1) Vatican Bank Affair in 1980s ;
2) controversial death of pope John Paul I (1978)
I really appreciate your understanding and insite on the movies and books of "The Godfather." Your passion and love for these mythos is obvious by the way you describe your perspective and your understanding of these great fiction and perhaps somewhat nonfiction stories. And I look forward to more of your insightful comtent; Brilliant Bro
Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!
I personally think most people didn’t enjoy the third because it actually shows the consequences of Don Vito’s actions long after he was gone and for Michael the torment of his brother demise is a constant theme.
The incest doesn't help
Very underrated movie.... some of the plots on this movie are based on true events
Elaborate please
@@ghostwriter991 Google it
I have never thought of this film as The Godfather 3. I look at it as a stand alone film almost and that is why I was able to enjoy it.
To quote the great Patti Lupone “she can’t act when she looks dead behind the eyes.”
Lol
3th? Threeth? Thirth?
@@MistaCUNextTuesday xd 3rd
Only thing sadder then a powerful old man looking for redemption in his winter years is a one who ait. The first at least you can see that there are still traces of humanity. Even tho it is probably a exercise in futility in Micheal case beacuse after decades of being up to his eye balls in the corsive elements of the stuff When it makes It's final call to a person like Michael
It comes dressed up in all the dreadful ways it was wielded.
0:20 "many negative aspects and problems..." and then Sofia Coppola comes into view.....how subtle

I agree. The story is great but the execution was definitely wanting.
Awesome video. Can't wait for the follow up.
Godfather 3 deserves more respect and love
All of this was based on Real World events in the Vatican. Immobiliare was based on SGI a multinational real estate company, which, at the time of the Watergate break-in OWNED the Watergate complex.
The Swiss Banker was closely based on Roberto Calvi, an Italian Banker and "associate" of both the P2 Masonic Lodge and the Italian Mafia. He was also known as "God's Banker". (The actor who plays the "Swiss Banker" looks awfully like Calvi!)
The senior figures in the real world were Michele Sindona, a Banker and real life member of the Gambino Crime family and Licio Gelli, the leader of the P2 Masonic lodge.
Absolutely right! I teared up, too.
Great video as always but how did no one understand this movie??? I got this the first time I seen it. I think everyone wanted more killing instead of a story line
Core theme of GF3, Michael really misses Fredo.

Thank you for this video. I still loathe it but your video is sublime!
I dont really like it personally but it has some good moments, expecially the ending.

Godfather 3 is a good movie. It has some classic scenes.
It’s sad because it really had the potential to be as good as the prequels.
Great point in regards to the music. It’s a very small but crucial detail.

The thing is, he didnt heed what Vito said near the end, of the first film.
"I work my whole life - I don't apologize - to take care of my family, and I refused to be a fool, dancing on the string held by all those bigshots. I don't apologize - that's my life"
Vito never sought redemption for himself, he owned everything he did and accepted whatever judgement awaited him in the next life.
Sorry to be that guy, but you mean to say "weakened".
Godfather 3 is Cavalleria Rusticana the hints are all over the place. watch the flash to Andy Garcia when the guy in the opera bites a guy's ear.
I enjoy 3 as much as the others. I never understood why people pan it so much.
I didn't know until watching this video that people disliked part 3. I've always loved it and thought it to be on par with the others

Don Vito said to Michael he wanted him not to be a mafioso but a senator, a governor... someone in the legitmate world, but there wasn't enough time.
Michael answers-"We'll get there."
When reuniting with Kay in part 1 and early in part 2 he keeps saying his business will be legitimate soon, Immobiliare is Michael finally accomplishing his objective, only to find out the game here is even more dangerous than running a casino.
That Fredo reference is 🤣
It was brilliant explanation , thank you
Whatever happened to Connie's kids?
Historically, Carmine always said that the Godfather III is nothing more than a glorified Cleaver
well he's very observant: the sacred and the propane. If you will. Very allegorical that guy.
The re-edit of this film make it as almost as good as the first 2. If you haven’t seen the it I absolutely recommend it!
I have a question? Showtime show all 3 godfathers during the Thanksgiving holiday. I notice Fredo wasn't at his father funeral. How come?
That's actually a great question
I feel like Godfather 3 and Rocky V are in the same boat of “bad film with great potential”, which makes it more infuriating than just a bad film. That being said, I do believe there are great moments in this movie. It’s just surrounded by stuff that ruins the movie.
#3 is my favorite! It's also important as Michael tries to go legitimate only to find out it becomes more crooked. Also it sets it up nice for Andy Garcia to become Godfather. I'm still waiting for #4.
I absolutely enjoyed III. The story line had been brilliant

Michael Corleone in this film is a symbol for the film and Coppola's career. Throughout the whole film he is seeking redemption, trying to overcome the hatred and negative preconceived notions people have for him, just the way the film has become hated without cause.
Can you compare Michael Corleone vs Tommy Shelby?
If anyone knows where I can find the original Godfather part three please respond
can you make a comparison between godfather 3 and godfather coda?
The fact that you didn’t even bother mentioning Joey Zaza as one of the conspirators is hilarious 🤣
I would have liked to have seen Andy Garcia playing the role of Godfather...one more movie...
The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone had my favorite premise of the trilogy.
