Maybe it was just the director's preferred way of portraying romance for this particular drama? Other couples in the drama also did not have any real kissing scenes. Aside from that, there was also other rumors that Wu Lei had a "no kissing" clause in his contract at the time, so it's just not clear. Also, he was 20 and she was 27, not 29.
