    Great insight. To be fair, representing Vic Metro in any sport is very difficult as there is a lot of talent - as well as political…so to not be selected is not completely unbelievable.
    But you also raise an issue that I also have known to be an issue and discussed with friends in frustration - that is, how limited the pathways for young basketball players is in Australia.
    To “progress”, first you play for whatever local team in your area and play on a Saturday morning - if you’re lucky, *someone* will invite you to representative team tryout - e.g. Dandenong Rangers; Sandringham Sabres, Melbourne Tigers, etc - pray the coach sees something in you and you make one of the squads…again, this can be political.
    Next step - try to get outside training, you need extra coaches to train you on all aspects including athleticism because you actually don’t get that at rep team training - as a 12 or 14 year old kid, good luck finding and funding that, let alone travelling for it before or after school.
    The main thing that happens at rep team training is cardio, drills, splitting into different groups of guards and bigs for more drills; then come together for x and o’s and scrimmage. There’s very little 1-to-1 training. You have to find that elsewhere.
    Also just logistically, getting to training after school can be an issue because it can be multiple bus trips. Not as straight-forward as it sounds.
    This is the stage a lot of kids get lost to the sport to reach a higher level. They don’t have a chance to become better.
    And this is one of the main differences between Australia and the U.S….it would be infinitely more beneficial imo to abolish the “rep” teams and focus money and investment on high school basketball because simply this is where the resources should already be - the kid is already going to school so all the resources should be there - from coaches to train you before or after school; to team buses to and from games (actually one of the hidden issues of rep team games on Friday nights is literally just finding a parent or teammate’s parent to drive you to game on other side of Melbourne); to all the other resources that the school environment can provide.
    Anyway, there’s more to it that could discuss, but I’ve really digressed!
    Great doco!

      @mitchellfreeman7010 Год назад

      True on the lack of training available. Very false that it’s hard to make rep teams or that it’s political, which happens when going for the state teams.
      Trusting the future of basketball to the state education system would be an even worse prospect.I’d believe this if there were more sport focussed high schools like box-hill etc.

    • @divad23
      @divad23 Год назад +2

      @@mitchellfreeman7010 I totally agree actually. Certainly not at the moment we couldn’t leave basketball in hands of high schools, but if the investment was there across the board, I would love to see a legitimate alternative to “rep” ball teams, assuming the level of high school bball could be raised up.
      Abolishing rep ball would not be good at the U-20 and senior level, but i feel at junior level, there could be an alternative, so I’m just spit-balling.
      It would make it a hell of a lot easier for kids to get to school early or simply stay afterwards for team trainings and specialist training, as well as going on a school team bus to compete against other schools 2 times a week or something.
      From personal experience, I literally had to miss some rep games across town because I had nobody to drive me on a Friday night (all teammates were from different schools and areas and got to games differently…and probably sick of having to go out of way pick me up every other week!)
      I don’t know how much has changed nowadays but I’m sure some kids/families are logistically-challenged by rep ball (not just with bball but I know from my cousins that soccer is similar) and have no idea where to find private coaching to get better, especially the athletic side of things, let alone pay for it.
      Would love to hear what current-day experiences is for 12-17 year olds…

    he is kinda like what everyone hoped Cedi Osman would be... close to averaging a triple double already which is scary as hell, usually players get a lot more efficient starting in year 3 in the league so he may be a candidate for MIP next season. definitely has potential to lay down 20/7/7 averages but he hasn't even dialed in his outside shot. it looks like he's prioritizing fundamentals and help defense though which is great if you're a okc fan, he's one of the most promising young point forwards. some of the best instincts as a playmaker i've seen in a package like him. dude's going to make hundreds of millions in a couple years, i'm hoping the Cavs throw a bag at him if they still have issues at the 3. will be a mainstay in the postseason once his team jumps this next hurdle.
