Raghuram Rajan on Demonetization

  • As Prime Minister Modi makes a strong case for tough decisions like Demonetization, an equally firm counter view has been presented by former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan. In an exclusive sit down with Barkha Dutt Rajan said Demonetization was a "jhatka" that hit the economy along with GST and the "stress in banks." Arguing that the business community is anxious he said they don't need "any more surprises." Rajan has just broken a year's self-imposed silence with a new book: 'I Do What I Do'. Watch this excerpt as he says "At this moment our growth is nothing to write home about." Barkha Dutt The Week

In order to lead the country you need great capacity to understand things in the right perspective and the readiness to put in hard work to tackle issues. It warrants only basic education formal or informal . Being a great economist, or a specialist in any field for that matter does not guarantee of being a great ruler. Above all these qualities the leader ought to be above of all selfish considerations. Of course India had better educated PMs. But Mr Modi stand out in his capacity to see things in the right perspective. His selflessness cannot be matched with ordinary fortune-seeking leaders the country has produced after independence. He might not have been able to provide with all he promises he made. But his promises and his struggle to bring forth them are earnest.

When one decides to do something that hasn't been done before we need to be ready for the unseen. Bold steps are beset with risks. We must not kill enterprise and boldness by pulling down people, analysing things in hindsight. Yes it could have been better executed but to say demonetization itself was a blunder is foolishness. Cmon countrymen after decades we have someone who is ready to break status quo and it is unfortunate if we are willing to pull each other down like we did when east india company came in. Looks like we haven't learnt much. But all said this chap rajan is brilliant and a great teacher for sure

Demonetisation, people talk about GDP fall, people suffered, savings lost. But it was bigger than this. The black money laundering was curtailed. Maybe the bigger criminals had a way out but the smaller ones were stopped. It had to be done without anyone knowing, meaning no printing of notes earlier, there were losses but a damn brave move.

  • @drindianguru1

Demonetization was draconian , just imagine a case where a person had withdrawn to purchase land or flat or marriage on the day and then told that it is not valid. The amount of stress PM has put on people was very high, on top of it he tried to justify that with the explicit's of corruption, getting back 3 Lakh crores dividend from RBI etc..etc...

'No more surprises? ' is the conclusive request of Rajan bhai. The demonetization could be carried out only in a poor ignorant third world country with a cheap currency. You cannot imagine such a move in a developed economy. After all there are those words of promise by a sovereign on every promissory note. Perhaps some illiterate could not comprehend the meaning of such a promise, and the implications of such an exercise. There are many other ways of pursuing the corrupt instead of this...

SIR I HAVE FEW QUESTIONS.....1)you may agrre that In kala dhan actually less than 1-5 crores people might me involved......our 120 crore people are non tax payers and poorer ...by demontenisation they were put to severe inconveniences .many of them due to illness etc possibly could not exchange their one or two notes of rs 500 and 1000 ...which was their hard earned money......what is answere to this
2)Why notes of RS 2000 PRINTED if cashless transactions were to be encouraged..mostly 120 cores genuine citizens pay by credit card or cheches high value transactions above rs 1000 . cash transactions by 120 crores is normally for amounts less than rs 1000.then for what purpose printing of Rs 2000 notes serve.is this not a wrong decision.will it not help back money again.
3)to tackle black all those issues like black money ,fake money etc......if we could have done simple method...... a)Tell banks /govt deptts to hold back all 500 /1000 notes received by them and give out new notes .of rs 500.100.50...Print only equivalent of notes received to balance cash flow.Gradually all genuine currency would have been deposited in a year or so.b)After some time give out a date that old currency will not work in transactions and can be converted legitimately after due accounting in banks .this way fake currency would have killed itself.120 crores people who did not have black money would not have beed hit by demonetinisation.Only few lacs/thousands who had un accounted large sums would have been affected ..and that was the purpose.
lastly.....all notes bear a unconditional govt undertaking...i PROMISE TO PAY......and not accepting these notes at any stage with whatsoever reason is un contitutional act.One can ask the source of these notes ...but cannot refuse any one to exchange .
And this single most factor which probably affectedly harmed 120 crores and may have deprived 100 crores pooerer to exchange their hard earned notes intime will be contributory to anger them for many times to come..

I think, Demonetization and the GST induced slowdown will not be an issue at all this time next year, but we seriously need to clear our as many bad loan and defunct or stalled projects if we don't want a collapse. reorganization and reconstruction of stalled or defunct companies need to be adjudicated quickly to free up many banks and give them a final picture and not keep them in limbo
(all this with a requisite that the govt doesnt unload any new surprises which might deter the public and prospective investors) the economy will regain its old growth projection very easily

The current govt has made corruption "organized". They failed to eradicate the same. Why is till date oil is outside periphery of GST? It is said that petrol diesel will taxed at 28% & state's will levy VAT. Again shall be a mistake....
