      I can't believe there are people believing this 250k miles scam. We have evidence from the Tesla truck where battery life is cut by more than half under load. These semi are going to be pulling even heavier loads and that doesn't even take into account the weight of their batteries. Are they pulling more goods per cargo or battery? Which is it? You can have both.

      In load capacity? You are literally transporting a battery around if you want to get the type of range 1-1 with a conventional semi. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but to make electric semis possible, there has to be a significant breakthrough in battery technology; the problem is that investors who are eager to invest now will be reluctant to try again when it is actually possible.

    I'm almost certain there's already a camera in the cabin so I'd imagine they can use the camera to tell if you're asleep or not paying attention. Both of which it can immediately let go of the accelerator and begin slowing down to a halt.
    For me the greatest benefit are for mountains. The regen braking will be a tremendous help to slow you down while going down a mountain and help maintain a controllable speed

    The vast majority of semi vs car crashes are usually caused by someone pulling out in front of you. It takes around 40% further to stop over a car. Most of the drifting out of lane is caused from crosswinds from a light or empty load. Typically if you see a flipped semi on a windy or stormy day in a open area it's because a strong crosswind caught it and it was running empty.

    In the EU max allowed speed for a semi is 50 mph so efficiency should be even better here when they start delivering. But we also mostly use twin tandem semis so they will definitely have to develop a different chassis for when the normal trailer semi market gets saturated with EVs.

    It's not surprising that the Tesla semi is legal in Europe as their restrictions are on total length including trailer, which is why cabover designs are often used.

  • @toughkix
    @toughkix 2 месяца назад +1

    The Tesla Semi is still too long for Europe. It might be legal to drive it without a trailer or with a short trailer, but there is a limit on the total length from the front of the truck to the back of the trailer. Since the Semi is so long, it's exceeding that length. And no company is going to buy trailers that are 2m shorter. So Tesla will have to make a shorter version for Europe (maybe without a bed in the back).

    What this doesn't tell us, is the absolutely massive market for charging station energy batteries that this opens up.
    Right now, not many trucks charge together. But imagine, when there are over a million of these trucks in service. A charging location absolutely will not be able to pull the 30 megawatt power from the grid for the time that trucks charge there. Instead, the charging location might only pull 5 megawatts continuously 24x7, while also having a, say 40MWh battery on-site. What this would do is lower the electricity rates that a charging location will have to pay, as then it can be pulling 5MW continuously, while deploying the stationary charging location batteries in times of peak charging. Ultimately, Tesla will have to work with utilities to be able to provide electricity at a rate of around $0.25-0.3kWh to trucks, so that they become cheaper enough to drive than diesel trucks to accommodate for their initial higher purchase price.
    I say this, because even in areas with cheap electricity rates, but where there is a high concentration of Superchargers, the demand variability introduced in the grid by them, supercharging rates can be as high as $0.40/kWh. Now for passenger vehicle use, most people can digest that on road trips, gas vs electricity is more or less within a 10-20% difference, with gas being cheaper for very efficient hybrids, while electricity being cheaper otherwise.
    For long distance trucking, and even below 400mi trucking, this is not possible as trucks travel on the road for a far higher percentage of the day versus a car, so they do not get to charge at home electricity prices.

    • @CooterELee
      @CooterELee 16 дней назад

      I am an owner operator, semi truck driver, and I feel like they are making a mistake with the superchargers instead of swappable batteries. I had heard from another video that the chargers they are using are a couple million dollars each. It seems to me that it would be a lot more cost-efficient to charge batteries slower with grid electricity when available and just swap them out. Imagine replacing the driver side diesel tank on a typical truck with two hooks where you could roll a new battery up on a pallet jack secure and lock in a massive plug. Something like that. I’m excited about the future but a lot of the people developing this technology don’t understand some of the problems where the rubber meets the road out here. Yes I have to take breaks mandated by law, that doesn’t mean that there is a charging infrastructure available at the place. I might have to take a break or that there’s any parking at the time I might be there at night. It’s not like I can even plan to take my brakes required where there is diesel fuel available all the time, it just doesn’t work like that out here. It’s OK for PepsiCo and Frito-Lay when they are returning to the same terminals over and over and I expect that the electric trucks will get adopted by, the large trucking companies like FedEx UPS, Walmart, etc., that have their own terminals. It’s going to be a long time before the smaller fleets and over the road. Truck can utilize electric vehicles.

    Based on several reports from independent reporters as well as electric truck drivers from IAA in Frankfurt/ Germany, the Tesla Semi is NOT yet road legal in Europe.
    One should always take T talk with caution - they have promised a lot during almost 20 years.
    Tesla Semi is already facing competition which is actually working on the road. And It will get even fiercer - check out the truck presented by a Chinese company named Windrose: 670 km range with full load (40 tons), 1.09 kW/km consumption, 35 mins charging 0 - 60% of the 729 kWh battery pack. That's faster and further than a lot of EV's! Will be EU road legal next year.

    The Semi is a big deal. Sure there is the business aspect and better for the environment, but people live near docs and distribution centers, as well as large retail operations, they have been dealing with the noise and air pollution at levels few think or hear about.
    In Oakland, California, the trucks would be lining up outside the docs to pick up loads, and the pollution from dozens of trucks idling their engines created major conflicts. There was a law passed to force trucks to shut off their engine while waiting to get into the docs.
    Point is, these electric commercial trucks will save lives and improve the lives in many neighborhoods.
    All kinds of other positives, but for those who live near delivery places using these large trucks, will be greatly impacted for the better.

  • @jimmysjohn141

    This will increase cost. The Tesla truck can't even pull load without destroying battery life by more than half. These will be pulling even heavier loads. When things are too good to be true then they usually are not true. The current gas semi spends about 5 minutes to fuel up. These will take at least half an hour with more frequent stops. The whole point of a smooth supply chain, logistics is to be as direct with fewer pauses.
