    Yes, well technique makes up a lot. I've had a Zildjian 10' splash for 15 years, it doesn't have a crack on it.

    That's so cool how you can hear the tone in the drum shell and that DW selects the right tone.

    I still have my Tama set from 1977, Saturn 12 plus 1. Still sounds good as do all the Zildjian A and K cymbals.

    You know, I love absolutely everything about the quality, and sound, and all the work they put into making every drumset. Everything about DW is amazing. Except for their lugs. I absolutely HATE their lugs. Thus, the reason I will sadly never buy a dw kit. :(

    John good doesn't even play drums not that they don't use top-of-the-line wood and Hardware , they do but they're sure going to stick you with that premium price too . John would be a good car salesman

    I got Pearl Octobans made out of maple as well on my 13 piece Pearl Masterworks Stadium kit. I use to have Peace Octobans before and they were made out of wood not acrilic. So there are many options for Octobans these days!

    Error #1: DW can make a 14"x11"
    Error #2: You do not tune top & bottom heads to the timbre matched note. Note is for bottom head only.
    Error#3: Hardware os gold, not brass.
    Error#4: Zildjian break no more or less than Sabian as they are made from the exact same formula & process.

    • @jonathannlauner3493
      @jonathannlauner3493 6 лет назад

      No errors. Yes DW can make a 14x11, I chose otherwise. Yes you DO tune top and bottom head in the timbre for perfect reference. For this last album, they were way higher, but still at the same pitch. And my hardware IS brass NOT gold! Thanks for watching. Keep rocking!

    • @RAWKdrummer1
      @RAWKdrummer1 5 лет назад

      Really just depends on how you prefer to tune your drums: some people tune both heads to the same note to get more resonance, some people prefer to tune the reso head higher to get more of a thud with quicker decay

  • @Launerfilms
    @Launerfilms 11 лет назад +2

    Actually, I did in fact play Meinl. And Ufip, and Wuhan and many more. While they all had certain sounds that would work for for different applications, Sabian was the only one that worked for what I was hearing for this band. Thanks for watching! Keep rocking! :)

  • @Chris05161967
    @Chris05161967 5 лет назад +3

    Rack it. Yes, I know, the shockwave can transfer throughout the kit, when on a rack. But there is more stability, and less need for extraneous hardware.

  • @thewickededge4291

    High end Zildjian, paiste, sabian cymbals last long if you treat them correct

    • @JLP7769
      @JLP7769  9 лет назад +5

      Aaron Ulrich It's NEVER been a matter of treating them right. If that were the case, Neil Peart, Terry Bozzio, Buddy Rich, Simon Phillips and hundreds of professional drummers would never break cymbals. But we ALL do. It's a matter of which ones break less often. In my case it was Sabian. Phil Collins breaks chinas all the time, and they are Sabians! When you tour often, and you go through cymbals. Period.

    • @fartsare2023
      @fartsare2023 8 лет назад +4

      I agree. I own both high end Zildjian and Meinl. Ive never broken any of them. But then again my technique is proficient so that both cymbals and heads are never broken.

    • @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power
      @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power 8 лет назад +1

      i've never broken a cymbal either, & i've played cheap cymbals as well as the staple companies. i've even played cracked cymbals bought from other drummers that got no worse ( before i started drilling & repairing them ). all about the playing style & the sticks.

    • @D_sull93
      @D_sull93 8 лет назад +2

      +kodiak wild Honestly never saw someone break a cheaper cymbal it seems its usually the higher end ones. THe worst are a crashes by zildjian they feel so good and buttery but have a rep for breaking

    • @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power
      @Pure_KodiakWILD_Power 8 лет назад +1

      VerdiKtagrad i love buttery cymbals-- zildjan and sabian ( even meinl has a coupla smooth ones ). still never broke em. my sticks go before cymbals, but that's usually the light ones i cut from 3/8 and 1/2" birch or other light wood dowels, & even the lightweight dowels i've used last a good number of sets before giving out. but even when i used to play with hickory sticks, or the promark 727 oaks i used to love, cymbals & heads lasted ( though when i used to go a little wild back in the day, i did dent a few drumheads ).
      *shrug* i don't tickle the drums ( unless for effect ), but i don't strive to beat the snot out of them either, so i've never unintentionally broken a cymbal or drumhead or percussion accessory or well made stick. i suppose even if you play at moderate intensity long enough, anything will eventually give out. many other things in my life wear out prematurely ( especially vehicles & work gear ), but not drumset components :-P

    Because this is not from DW. It's from me. This simply the gear section of the L.A. Underscore DVD (soon to be released) and every band member has one. It's just me showing my own personal choices and why, due to my 45 years of experience. So weather you call them concert toms, or tubs, or cans, it really does not matter. It simply gets my point across! It's just fun talking about drums, right? Hell, when I would talk to Armand Zildjian, he used to call cymbals PIES!! LOL!

    Wow, what an astoundingly beautiful kit!
    Ironically I have nearly the exact same set-up in terms of drum placement and sizes (a fewer number of 8" toms though), even down to the splash arrangement, the bells and the damned tube stick holder! Hah!!!
    My shells are nowhere close to the quality of yours (it's just an old Rockstar DX kit LOL), but like you, I use its entirety in the music I play.
    Great video!

    Yes, chinas are supposed to be played that way, but for the stax, Mike Portnoy (the inventor of them himself) plays it with the splash on the bottom and the china with the bell facing upwards on top. But since you have the china on the bottom and the splash upside-down on top, it's basically the exact same but upside-down so it doesn't really change the sound.

    i was lucky to be endorsed by two amazing companies roc drums owned by glen quan and atlas cymbals imported by vincent ceherelli who called himself jim atlas in new york. these gentlemen helped me more than they could know with my session and rehersal and live work with the likes of pete bardens when he returned to the camel catatog after not playing it for many years.

Just asking because I've been seeing a lot of small drum and cymbal companies lately but I've never played their brands before.

    If your breaking a lot of cymbals your doing something wrong, hitting at bad angle or if its around the bell ,people forget to change the plastic sleve that your cymbal sits on, i check mine every week , if it wears through its metal on metal , then you get hairline cracks. People will crack a $200 cymbal because they were to lazy to change a $2 part .

    I've been playing Zildjians for over 40 years (started when I was 12, I'm 53 now). I can hit as hard as anyone else and I only ever broke 1 8" splash cymbal (that I used to invert to make it like a mini-china). After all the inversions it finally cracked. But not from actually hitting it, but from manually inverting it. My 1st Zildjian 20" medium ride is still going strong and sounds great. I don't know what Jon has been eating (or where he buys his Zildjians) that he breaks them all. Weird.

    SaBiAn(n) actually are made by Robert Zildjian. SaBiAn is an acronym of the names of his children. I don't really like Sabians, because I find the bell usually sounds like a "Firebell." But he says they do not break... SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!! (even if I don't totally like the sound of Sabians...).
    Whereas... UFIPs are supposed to be the easiest to break, as they are roto-cast, rather then forged... But I have never owned one...
    Short stack drums sound neat!

    how did you get to where you are today. Who gave you your foot in the door connection to be a known studio drummer... I always wonder this about people who become established in the music industry because it is so difficult to make a career out of it... I have been told by established successful name drummers that there is no session work anymore. If there is no session work anymore, and its a longshot to play with a band that tours... how can one make a living in music????
