First planting i got 1000 white pine. Then through the game commission they had a nursery that offered great deals on a lot of varieties of habitat trees and shrubs. Got 2000 more items.
Nice work ! I enjoy your channel. I'm in the black hills, SD And of course plant Black Hills Spruce along with Ponderosa. Needless to say planting indigenous trees makes me look like a WAY better green thumb than I actually am 😅 Five years on - And I happier than Ever that I invested the time and money
oh yes absolutely! I love seeing the mix of spruce trees! I have planted them on virtually many of the properties that we have flipped and they are beautiful! Thanks have a great weekend
@@kapperoutdoors o wow! thanks for the reply! Just stumbled upon your videos after seeing the Nebraska greenhouse vdos. What you guys are doing is amazing. We live in Southern Illinois (zone 6a,6b), plan to have a homstead of my own someday
Kap, if practical put cages around those trees with T-post. I’ll be planting a bunch of Hemlock in cages next week. The deer will find every small evergreen and rub them bare if they can.
Yep exactly what happened to mine, caging them so expensive. Even a T post is 3-4.00 each. When your taking several hundred trees each year it’ll cost afortune
I know it takes some more time and effort but buy some welded wire field fence and make some small cages for them and put a stake to keep the cage on the tree. This has saved the pines that we planted from being rubbed up and eaten.
Whites and Norways are my favs...deer will nip on them if there isn't much food...but better than pine cuz they will eat and rub the pines...I also use an earth auger to put in all my trees..if you are planting these in the switchgrass you must make sure the switch isnt going to take over the roots of the new trees...i tried this and just leaving them will give you poor success rate...I found that tilling a few areas and then planting makes a huge difference...just giving my experience...hope it all turns out for you...HAPPY EASTER!!
brad brockhouse, You are right on..precisely my recommendations and experience. Joe will figure it out and he likes to learn by the multiplentious successes and busts he has had. He'll need to begin to burn that WSNG plots in the next year or so...but fire will be tough on those softwoods. Your mention of using an earth auger is my secert also. Can drill a couple dozen holes in the same time it takes to hand dig one hole. Where are you located??
@@clarkwheeler8764 I burn mine every five years and the years I dont burn the switchgrass I have a local farmer come in and round bale it...I've had that field for 10 yrs now and it turns out wonderful every time...
Not many spruce survived the deer! And I think we had a drought that season also! The loblolly pines turned out the best as they grow super fast and keep growing back even if the deer eat them down to a nub. The spruce will die out if they eat all the needles off them. But we have more deer than 90% of the country. You will love them once they get like 4 to 6 feet tall! Best of luck.!
Concolor Firs (white firs) are gorgeous trees. Prettier than blue spruce & don’t die in 20 years, like blue spruce. Softer, longer needles. Very under rated trees. Don’t know if deer like ‘em. But i do. 🤣
They won’t eat them but will rub them when they get 4-5’ tall.lost a ton at that height last season. Really irritating after all the work planting, either inundate with volume or you can punch a T post next to them when they get taller fyi.
yep you are right on that one, especially if you have a load of deer. But I do love going back and seeing them after like 10 years, at least the survivors! Thanks
Nice work Kap & Mrs K. I am confused, is this the land where your house is or what piece of land is this? Do you still have the land in Kentucky? Full-watch. Have a fine Easter, guys.
Thank you, you too. We have a lot of deer, and they ate up a lot of the loblollys, but I ordered ones with the stiffer needles so hopefully they will leave em be!
You have to make serious attempts to protect young trees, not only deer but dear little bunny rabbits eat the things ! So first off, little trees go in rabbit tubes, if they survive that and get a little taller, they really have to be protected by stakes, over here(UK) the parks departments set a triangle of three stakes joined by three tiers of battens nailed to the stakes. This looks weird with a skinny looking little tree up the middle but it apparently works ! It strikes me that if you are really serious about replanting you might be better off buying fewer trees at a time but buy much bigger ones and put stake cages round them. After all you have plenty of stakes waiting to be cut !
If we tried to protect them all we wouldn't get anything else done. We plant so many trees that there are just too much, but thank you. It would be nicer to do as you mention there's no doubt about that.
Enjoyed the video. If you haven't already, check out The Wildlife Group. They have a wide variety of fruit and nut trees for wildlife. I've ordered from them before, and received nice trees at reasonable prices.

Nice job, time consuming but well worth it. Stay safe, be careful, take it easy and keep dry
What a nice farm! I just planted 24 white spruce that are about 18” tall, about how big are your white spruce now?

I love fir trees, but I think they need moist soil, and I think anything soft the deer will eat. I also love hemlocks too. Thanks

How did your switchgrass do by the end of last summer?

Hopefully the deer will leave the new spruce trees alone!
yeah lets hope so! The trees are getting expensive!
The Spruce grow limbs thick from the ground up, so it keeps the deer from rubbing on them.
yeah I hope so! They wiped out the white pines unfortunately... thanks
Happy Easter! As you have pretty mild winters there, maybe the deer will leave them alone. If they got desperate, maybe not.

LOL, I'll have to have a pretty high markup for being prepared!!!

What’s that thing in your hand? I looked it up in Wikipedia as “stick tool” and the first thing that came up was “shovel”. Is that correct?
🤔🤔🤫
Josh Beckett Good one Josh.
How about trying spraying repellents for deer on the trees
hope the deer dont tear these trees up
Apples and fence them off until they are bigger than the deer.
That field could really use a burn.
or ist a special "wax" to put at those trees to repel animals from eating it.
Joe, Who did you order the tree's from?
I put it in the vid, It was pottedtrees.com The service was great, shipped right to the door!
Sneaky......I watched 4 times before I caught the zoom in at the tag right at the beginning.
