Listen to the Ramones, the Dead Kennedys and of course the oldest oldie, Communication Breakdown by Led Zeppelin. If you want some modern punk bangers listen to some Lovejoy. It's not all guitar.

my green Russian big muff seems to have that perfect blend of fuzz/distortion that I use it for both now. it can be dialed in to sound like each, also. my current fave pedal
Those sound great with batteries that are about to die, or you can buy power supplies that are adjustable, to get that sound all the time.

overdrive has a distinct clean / mushy tone that sounds best to these old ears. Never stop playing Guitar !!!!
Fuzz is the overdrive lifted to a high level of LoFi. It has its beauty.

I'm conflicted but satisfied. I searched "overdrive vs distortion" to try and figure out what I wanted. I was looking for an explanation...I guess explanations don't always require words and don't have to be lengthy.

It can be explained using the words "hard clipping" (distortion) and "soft clipping" (overdrive) but you are correct, hearing examples of each is much better.

@@castleanthrax1833 This is incorrect. Overdrive can be hard (Boss OD3) or soft (Ibanez TubeScreamer) clipping.
I like to think of Overdrive vs Distortion in terms of intensity / effect on the sound.
clean > boost > overdrive > distortion > fuzz

@@castleanthrax1833 For anyone who's not an arrogant dickweed, try looking up "JHS What You Need To Know About Overdrive Pedals".
In it, Josh Scott (the most prominent pedal guy on Earth) describes several hard clipping overdrives including the Klon and the DOD Overdrive Preamp 250.
Hard clipping overdrives were around for a long time before soft clipping was ever a thing :)
Fuzz is the heaviest and most fulfilling

i'm a big overdrive guy, some of my favorite heavy riffs are played with just overdrive and it sounds fantastic

I can never get fuzz dialed right. It's either way too weak and clean (sounds like a crappy overdrive/boost) Or obnoxiously distorted. I have a fuzzface and play a strat, everyone seems to get an amazing tone with a fuzzface tthrough a strat except me.

New realisation for me. Ive never owned Fuzz, but it sounds as driven as distortion, yet with more clarity to the notes. Although, personally i prefer the tightness of OD over the looser Fuzz sound. Also OD's can get more gainy than that sample if needed. I started with distortion in the 80s (Boss Heavy Metal Pedal, and Ross Distortion - the black one), then thru a bunch of amps with gain or vol/master combo. Nowdays i love my SD-1, with the GE-7 together. If i want more grit (metal styles) but at low volume without the loudness of valve breakup on my princeton(bedroom volumes), i use a MIAB pedal. Fuzz seems a little messy for my tastes, but some people love that. The closest i would wanna get to fuzz is a ProCo Rat with drive at about 9 or 10' o'clock.

It depends of what genre you want,if its hard rock then its distortion if its rock and roll you go with overdrive and for fuzz its still hard rock

@@megaknight6958 I feel like fuzz would be good mixed with distortion. Weird combination but there’s a lot of possibilities. Probably perfect for doom metal.
In the old days there were only two pedals... a fuzz and a wah. Over the many years they've made so many pedals I've long lost track of which is what.

my first fuzz was a Morley power wah fuzz, first overdrive 80s pro co rat, first distortion, boss hm 2. Still have all if them pedals, but line 6 made me lazy. ( pod hd pro x rack mount) it can do anything! You play great, but I want that shirt!👍
Fuzz and overdrive are just two types of distortion. I guess they mean different things when you’re talking about pedals, but from an engineering perspective they’re all just variations of the same effect

Damn, my amp kinda has some fuzz into it when I plug it to my electric guitar. I dunno why but I kinda like that, both the amp and guitar is over 20 years old or so.

I could be wrong by my analogy but I’ve always felt like distortion was like for classic rock type music, overdrive was for like metal, and fuzz was for like almost blues type of rock like Hendrix or something. But I know some of them can be mixed and matched. Like certain distortion pedals can be used for metal while some overdrives can be used for classic rock. But that’s just my analogy or what not lol.
I think overdrive is classic rock and distortion is metal. overdrive first came to be when people in the 60s or whenever started cranking their tube amps. Cream and Led zeppelin is overdrive. Metallica is distortion.
They are "for" whatever you want them to be for. There are no rules.

Technically, all 3 "dirty" sounds are distortions, which is usually obtained by overdriving something. Please be more specific, what are you calling "overdrive"? An overdriven amp? A soft clipping circuit? A fet circuit?
