    Unstructured yapathon time
I first watched Evangelion in 2020 in Discord vc with my friends, and honestly I didn't love it from the beginning but it's grown on me so much since that. You can endlessly criticize it for plot holes, poor pacing, and general lackluster execution but it's so powerful that I don't think any of that matters. I haven't even really thought about how EoE compares to the final episodes because I really don't think technical details like that are what should be discussed with this franchise. You nailed it with that final section, the entire thing (the show and EoE at least) is so confrontational that you're either gonna get nothing from it or literally have your life changed by it over time. EoE may be my favorite movie ever because of how it completely tears down the fourth wall and pretty much transcends the medium of film in so many ways. The final beach scene may be my favorite scene in anything ever because, again, it's so confrontational. Shinji attempted to reverse instrumentality or whatever, and either nobody in the world wants to exist outside of that, or his attempt didn't work. All he can do is revert back to his old ways and express his emotions in unhealthy ways. It's so dark and I love it so much, this franchise means a lot to me

This is really my favorite thing of all time to be honest, no other form of anything has made me feel as connected with it as Eva. Nothing else has made me so connected and related with it's characters and lore, very personal show for me.
I actually did really love it at first, unlike what you said, I found the characters SUPER compelling and really human, flawed, and just super relatable. On rewatch I think I found it much better though. I understood it really well on the rewatch but not as much as the first, as you were describing.
What I love the most about Evangelion (Besides the characters) is probably how it's two endings intersect with End of Evangelion showing a more physical aspect of the ending while the original series shows a more mental aspect.
I love the soundtrack, art, themes, and quite literally every single thing about this show. Time for another rewatch!
Asuka is probably my favorite character ever, tied with Shinji, and the rest of the cast.
I'd recommend Pathologic 2 if you're into crippling depression, gives similar vibes.

Also, I think episode 22 is my favorite, the whole Asuka scene really builds her character so much and it kind of helped me come to terms with realizing and acknowledging my own trauma instead of repressing it and making my PTSD worse.

Last year I got to see 3.0+1.0 in my local cinema with a bunch of friends, I hope in the near future I could repeat that with End Of Evangelion since I loved watching 3.0+1.0 on a large screen.

saw it in theaters too, had a great time. I recommend the podcast "Will it send me to hell?"'s episode on Evangelion, they get into the movie alot and talk about the actual christian themes it has

I personally think the 2 endings are connected. I think the series ending takes place first with shinji getting applause and such. Then afterward is taken out of instrumentality to choking asuka.
I think it could maybe be taken in the way that, because he's now in a flawed world, is flawed himself with the actions he just took towards asuka. So after a bad part of living is shown, the world shows a good part of itself by asuka stroking shinjis face, I presume forgiving him. Let me know if this makes sense or if I'm just a yapper

Actually great fun video to watch. I saw it recently in theaters, and thought the experience was great. I’d yap and dump a bunch but honestly I don’t got the time rn but I’ll just say the rebuilds end up kind of just being a worse version of the series/EoE for me, with parts that are particularly bad in 4.0 that I don’t wanna say since you haven’t seen it yet 😭. Nonetheless, this was legit actually a nice video to play in the background, the unscripted nature made it feel real asf, maybe this’ll pop off for you 🗣️🗣️
