I envy you. You get to enjoy OG Dragon Ball with next to no knowledge of Z, so you get to enjoy the twists and turns of this series without any future context.
Yep. That’ll be interesting compared to other OG Dragon Ball reactors who’ve already seen Z and GT/Super. Some future arcs are so much better knowing what transpired in the original series.

Goku is just so pure. And he can get away with the questionable things he does because as a viewer you understand that he's not doing it on purpose. He just doesn't know any better.

Just so you know. Goku is a heavy inspired by Sun Wukong. So you'll see some references of that.

Same, Z took it self way to seriously, and I love the fantasy sci fi mix, and we see so many different places....as opposed to Z, where it's ALWAYS a grassy plane with rock pillars everywhere.
Seing you enjoying this show so much it makes me so happy and I even got tears of joy for you because I also started with Dragon Ball and I was watching all of the episodes when I was 11-12 and then all the dragon ball Z espisodes after high school when I was between 13 and 15! So many memories
Kid Goku is easily one of the most likeable protags I've ever seen
Bulma is 16 and Goku is 11 at the start of the series just so you know and don't get confused by character designs.

The last time I watched DBZ series was on Cartoon Network on cable television as a child/teens. Now I feel nostalgic. It was later censored on last leg of cable television as such cartoons series are were raw and direct. Now as an adult, certain themes are relatable. I think this was better than consuming content on social media nowadays as it had quirky balance of cheap jokes and universal philosophy.

Pilaf claims to be an emperor but the emperor of what? Shu and Mai? Goku is only acting dumb because he grew up in the mountains by himself with his grandfather and not anyone else also not in the city. He dont know what anything is.

its not innocence more like ignorance, he is not really a good person as he is dumb, i mean he has no problem killing people even other species which can talk he consider as food
I haven't seen the original DB in such a long time, but thinking of all those crazy journeys that Goku had, mostly with Bulma back in the day, it makes me wonder if anime fans back then were as crazy as they are today with shipping and pairings and all that (I mean, "mary sue" came from a Star Trek fanfic from the 70's, so I mean.. some things are older than we thought).
I could only imagine that some fans reading the manga and following the anime were pushing for Goku and Bulma to end up together at the end.
The brother-sister relationship Goku and Bulma have had is just priceless. Wish modern shows had these kinds of wholesome friendships, lol.

i wish i were watching o g dragon ball for the first time again... that's ok i get to watch it again vicariously through you... brings me back to the days... Saturday morning cartoons... with leftover fried rice and french toast for breakfast... i used to have to wait a week for the next episode
In fairness to Bulma, she is sixteen years old at this point, not an adult either, talking to a twelve year old boy who already - albeit in complete innocence - tried to look at her butt (looking for a tail). So it probably seemed like a legit tactic.
One of Goku's funniest lines was sadly cut from the English dub, "Oh so instead of a tail, girls have an extra butt on their chest"
Love the series 😊. In the first episodes of Dragon Ball Goku is 12 yrs old, and Bulma is 16 yrs old. By the time she appears in the first episodes of dragon ball "Z" both she and Goku are complete adults.

人の初めてのリアクションを楽しみに見に来てるだろうに、スージーの楽しみと自分の楽しみや多くのリスナーの楽しみを潰すのは愚かとしか言えない。
I'm really glad to see someone looking back on the original Dragon Ball. I decided to check them out recently, and decided I liked it so much better than Z, for its "Journey to the West"-inspired adventure story and its gags before it all became about fighting and power-ups and Super Saiyans and voice actors making constipated noises.
I consider OG DB the superior manga/anime for the same reasons. I do love DBZ but OG DB is just something special and I consider it the peak of the whole franchise.
I'd also be a bit careful dropping some info from later in the franchise so she doesn't get confused.

They censored alot of that from japanese version that I grew up with. The context in which Goku lays on Bulma was he used to do them with his Granpa Gohan. He called it sack pillow. And they cut out few scenes as well.
Dragon ball is really something special, i remember catching it on tv when i was very young in 95 i think i was 7 and i was instantly hooked, and thinking about it, the entire journey of watching Goku go from that little adorable goof ball to one most beloved characters today was just magical.

A little information Akira toriyama was also the character Designer of Dragon Quest and many Games. So he s one of the succest Game Designers of all time plus the second succest mangaka of all time after eichiro Oda , the father of schonen. Or better the father the inspiration of the big three and many other Manga Animes.
You should put the subtitles at the bottom so you can see what's really being said. Db,dbz 90s and early 2000s butchered the script.

I miss the '80s and '90s and that era of comedy. Maybe if we tell all the "cancel culture people" to shut up and just ignore the stuff they find "problematic", perhaps we could have another cultural renaissance.

It got censored to hell and back when it first came to NA. And they were some 4kids level censorship too.
Granted this was in 95, so anime was still not well known in the US. Thank god for Metal Gear Solid and Pokemon. They really opened the doors.

You do make an interesting point, though. With some of the content in these early episodes, I do feel like there are people who would try to get all up in Dragon Ball's business, and see it cancelled, or something of the sort. Thankfully, it's protected by its legacy, so if anybody were to be so brazen as to try cancelling it today, those people would be utterly destroyed. Yet if it had come out today, it never would've had the chance to gain that following that would defend it to the death like we have.
Two things to keep in mind about Goku. He is very strong and very dumb, XD and it's magnificent. He genuinely does not know what a women is.

I feel the same. Old Animes were so carefree and i miss those. Even newer adaptations of these old animes are too rigid in comedy.

I mean, I understand your concerns, but keep in mind that Goku is basically, a little Tarzan, but capable of speaking thanks to his grandpa. He is very young still, and he has lived by himself for a while. Plus, it was the 80's, things were different back then, and this kind of humor was sort of common (based on what I've seen from movies and stuff from the time, I wasn't born during the 80's). Things that are inappropriate now, probably still were back then, but not many people cared so this kind of humor that might not fly today wasn't an issue back then. Goku was adorable though.
