It's not hard to confuse Mr. Mackey. In my game, I made my character a trans girl and he just had one minor freak out after another. He had to call my mom twice just to make sure he wasn't going insane with the new information I'd given him.

The issue here is that, to someone who is progressive, Mackey looks like the butt of the joke: an old fuddy-duddy trying to change with the times but so utterly clueless as to what he's talking about he makes it worse. To a bigot or someone equally ignorant however, the very concept of the gender spectrum looks like a joke as needlessly confusing as it's worded here, and Mackey as a longtime fan-favorite character is somewhat sympathetic in his bumbling. Point in favor of writing skill that it works multiple ways, but leaving room for that second interpretation is potentially harmful.

The issue here is that, to someone who is progressive, Mackey looks like the butt of the joke: an old fuddy-duddy trying to change with the times but so utterly clueless as to what he's talking about he makes it worse.
To a bigot or someone equally ignorant however, the very concept of the gender spectrum looks like a joke as needlessly confusing as it's worded here, and Mackey as a longtime fan-favorite character is somewhat sympathetic in his bumbling.
Point in favor of writing skill that it works multiple ways, but leaving room for that second interpretation is potentially harmful.
