Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen Postgame Interview (1998 Playoffs)

  • New York Times - June 1, 1998
    By the end, there were frayed edges on his greatness and dents in his mystique. But Michael Jordan did not care about appearances. He dropped the elegance of his game tonight and simply barged into the Indiana Pacers.
    It was this brutish display that decided the outcome in the last tense minutes of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals before an unsettled crowd at the United Center. There was the moment when Jordan tossed his tired body into the air and crashed into Derrick McKey, who had menaced him during the series. Jordan was the one left standing. There was the instant he sneaked inside of the brawny Dale Davis and grabbed the rebound of Scottie Pippen's missed free throw. A possession was saved.
    This was not the polished Jordan; he made only 9 of 25 shots on his way to 28 points against a defense that showed no deference. But faced with a game that could have meant the end of the Bulls' era, he had the poise of the ultimate winner. A loss and this five-time championship team might have been dismantled on the spot. Instead there was Jordan, an 88-83 victory and relief.
    ''I'm sure people will say, and I've heard it asked, if the swagger is gone from the Bulls,'' Jordan said. ''Probably. But no one has taken anything away from us. We still have an opportunity.''
    Now the Bulls will drag themselves to Utah for Game 1 of the National Basketball Association finals on Wednesday night. It took some maneuvering around the undaunted team that Coach Larry Bird had ready to pull off the unimaginable, but Jordan put the Bulls in position to win a sixth title with the aid of Toni Kukoc's 21 points. Kukoc was 7 of 11 from the floor and the only steady hand on a nervous team that shot just 38 percent.
    The Bulls won through force. Pippen came through with some pivotal rebounds as he catapulted his lanky frame above the muscle of Dale Davis and Antonio Davis. Pippen had 12 rebounds, part of a 50-34 Bulls edge. (The advantage was 22-4 on the offensive boards.) The Pacers were left to wander off the court, shaking their heads after coming so close to shocking the world.
    ''This was probably the toughest playoff series of my career,'' said Pippen, who has played on all five Bulls champions since 1991. ''There was the pressure, and being expected to win. They gave us everything we could ask for. We just tried to make this one game the biggest game of our season.''
    And of their lives. Jordan did not give a career performance, but he found his teammates when he had to.
    ''I remember when I was a player and not shooting well, I had to help in other ways,'' Bird said. ''Michael's jump shot didn't beat us tonight, but his free throws did. That's part of what makes him the greatest player ever.''
    It was obvious that as this game arrived, there was something unsettling and unfamiliar seeping into the atmosphere surrounding the Bulls: insecurity.
    A day before Game 7, Bulls Coach Phil Jackson must have sensed the unease creeping into his team's mind, and he offered this advice in dealing with fear.
    ''I told them you can lose,'' Jackson said. ''Anything's possible. You can lose a game like this. But if you give your best effort, there's nothing frightening about losing. Fear is something worse than the actual thing itself.''
    Bird's motivational speech?
    ''Don't choke,'' he deadpanned.
    There was nothing uptight about the Pacers. They came out as if this were just another game. After hitting their first eight shots and taking a 13-point first-quarter lead, the Pacers learned about the resolve of the Bulls, particularly Jordan. With a flurry of energy in the second quarter, he shooed away the butterflies and carried the Bulls to within 3, at 48-45, at the half.
    The Bulls, leaning on the hot shooting of Kukoc, took an 8-point lead in the third quarter. But there was no room for comfort as the Pacers came back to tighten things after a couple of turnovers by the Bulls in the final two minutes of the period. The Bulls held just a 69-65 lead entering the fourth.
    The crowd held its breath, knowing this last quarter could well determine the life span of the Bulls' dynasty. Instead of Jordan deciding when enough was enough, the Pacers could be the ones to nudge him toward a sunset.
    ''I was tired, but it's all about laying it on the line,'' Jordan said. ''It's about heart. I think we showed a lot of heart out there on the basketball court.
    ''It's a big challenge to get to the finals, but you look at our records. We haven't lost in the finals and that's a great confidence to have. We're going in with a lot of confidence. Sure, it was a battle to get there, no one said it would be easy, but we're there. So now, let's just do the job.''

    "Shut up and play" "Whatever it takes to win" "No doubt what we can accomplish". This man had supreme confidence in himself. He had the most competitive attitude and killer instinct in all of sports. No excuses. No bullshit. No whining. Losing in the Finals wasn't an option to him. Winning was in his blood. No one certainly not LeBron James will ever come close.

      I think this 10 part documentary coming out later this year will give the world a different view of Michael Jordan and what made him so fierce. Everyone knows how he was a killer on the court during the NBA game and he hated loosing at anything. But this whole watching the Bulls in practice with MJ will show all of us how much he pushed each player to become a champion. If you couldn't take critism Jordan would run you off the court or team.

    I don’t know if this is an adequate explanation of why Jordan is the GOAT but I’ll try. Today’s players take too many liberties with the game meaning they go out and play and if I win I win and if I lose I lose. Jordan would never take any liberties with the game. He is that rare gem that truly never had any fear and treated the game with so much respect and professionalism. He would never say I’m more than an athlete. He was more humble than that . He was the athlete. The ultimate athlete. The GOAT.

But no one's taken anything away from us thus far..." this is old school, just a confident man speaking bluntly because there's no reason for false bravado...so different from today's 'stars' who would've answered in some overcompensating manner, full of cliches... "uh no, absolutely not..we're focused and we're gonna get it done. We know what we need to do and that is to bring our energy and our 'A' game and just really come together and make this a team win." They didn’t thought about numbers, they only cared about winning. That’s why MJ was happy with 6-0 and LeBron is happy about a triple double in a final series even if is a sweep.

    No team has ever changed Michael the way that pacers team did. I think if you asked Michael he would tell you that. I have met so many bulls fans over the years they all say that that game was the first time they were nervous about a playoff game with Michael.

    • @MrZackavelli

      +jared Earle Pacers may have been the ones closest to knocking the Bulls off their throne, but that title definitely belongs to the Pistons.

    • @CoachJCYOBB
      @CoachJCYOBB 8 лет назад

      +Matches_Malone I really don't count Detroit because they did beat 3 strait years. the Knicks, Cavs, and heat would be the type of teams that would qualify because they didn't beat them. but yes I agree the Detroit Pistons gave michael more trouble than any other opponent.

    • @MrZackavelli
      @MrZackavelli 8 лет назад

      jared Earle I didn't mean the title of 'closest to knocking the Bulls off the throne'. I meant that Detroit is more deserving of the title 'the team that changed the Bulls more than any other team did' than the Pacers were. But the Pacers as a consolation prize do deserve the title of 'closest to knocking the Bulls off their throne'.

  • @gambareiele7832
    @gambareiele7832 2 года назад

    If I may add, during 90's especially Bulls time, if someone is badly injured or indisposed, and can cost their whole career, they still played hard to the best that they could, they even forced themselves to the limit, because their mentality as one team specifically Bulls is to play with the team, to avoid being burden to the team, and to contribute and win. Like Jordan's flu game, and Pippen's back ache on where he still stood up hurting severely despite of the excruciating pain, just to give Jordan a screen and make the basket. That's pure dedication, that's pure commitment and sincerity.
    They let the payees and fans feel and realize that they are doing such passion, not because of themselves alone or to protect their finances, but for the love of the game, for the love of the sport.
    The last passionate player I saw was the late Kobe Bryant which I consider 2nd best.
    But after him, especially today...nah...I'm not saying everyone, but mostly, their playing just to protect their finances.
    For me, mentality during the 80's, 90's until Kobe was pure exceptional. Yes, health is important but, when it comes to your profession, you will do whatever it takes, just to get the goal, and a risk will always be a part of it. That's just synonymous to being a cop, military, fire fighter, electrician, foreman, kitchen crew, security guard, etc.

    Pippen injured during most of that regular season made Jordan play more minutes and put on more effort than he used to since rookie years. Phil couldn't give him more rest while nearing the playoffs, and that had a toll in how some teams like the Pacers neverless good team possed more danger than they were suppose to last against the Bulls. Jordan willed the Bulls even when this wasn't his best night or the best version of himself.

      Larry and Magic got it to primetime...from games being shown on replay at 10pm and MJ took it global....with the help of Nike, Gatorade etc....remember both those companies....were built around him....before MJ Nike was an upstart like under armour 5 years ago and Gatorade was a an unknown scientific formulation drunk by NFL players out of unmarked cups lol
