Can she have a weekly segment? Her enthusiasm is infectious! Also, the anxious expressions of the band are hilarious. It's like they're watching their dad do something stupid.
socrappyicoulddie I cant agree more!!! I loved her energy too! She,made the show,so much fun!!!
I hope he at least invites her back often! Like how NDT's been on his show a bunch of times
I agree the band's faces were the best part.
I was laughing at how Jon Batiste looked when Steven's about to drop those powder on the Erlenmeyer flask. Bahahaha!
Maddie's "she's gonna do THAT?!" face at 6:04 is too good
She was my professor for Chemistry this year! She's an excellent teacher. To those of you complaining about her being hyper or squealy, how do you suppose you would react if you were on such a highly watched show? I really hope she becomes the next Bill Nye.
And we totally did those in class. On the final class day students came up to breathe fire and do other demonstrations when they answered questions correctly. She also made liquid nitrogen ice cream. Go Dr. B!
Joshua Fowler my organic teacher was boring and low key an asshole and I contribute him to my decline in mental health. Lucky you!!! Lol
Good for you
yeah she came to my school!!
@ThatOneAsianBroChick University of Texas at Austin
Lucky! I study chemistry at university of arizona. No one there is that infectious tho
"Are we insured for this?"
"Nooooo..."
S kildert I love thier banyer at the end.
I think not
I think Yes
Im gonna go
Okay I got this
XD
It's the audience in danger?
Yes, but there fine
"Is the audience in danger?"
"Oh, yeah, but they're fine"
LOVE LOVE LOVE her enthusiasm.
*"She's a self proclaimed pyromaniac."*
Hahahaha
*Proceeds to blow up stuff in manic glee* Oh dear
confirmed pyromaniac. but in a controlled environment ^^
inkblotCrisis she was alotta fun! I really enjoyed her and her energy she brought!
A star is born
This is the kind of person who will bring hundreds and hundreds into science who probably never would have otherwise. Great personality!
inkblotCrisis who lowkey isnt a pyromaniac
"Don’t do this at home... but if you do this at home..." 😇
123haninhk
What you call a realist right there; she knows the audience
Don’t try this at home. Try it at someone else’s home instead.
Or...
Adam Savage: “Do not try this at home.”
Me: “Too late.”
"...Don't get any on your lips"
*Proceeds to get it all over her lips*
I met her at the texas state science fair. She is awsome
bombingthesky were her pupils dilated?
bombingthesky Texas has a science fair????!!!!!
EAT EM UP CATS
awesome*
Vikrant Subakade uhhhh.... UT has a really strong science program & one of the largest Natural Science colleges in the country
Aww her university students are probably really proud of her for being on national television setting shit on fire lmao
John Nazario we r :)
We are😂😁
We are :)
Her reactions to explosions is how I imagine Harley Quinn should react.
she reminds me of cheryl tunt after she sets stuff on fire
+Ben Hinman
OMG! Yes!
"Whoooo! Outlaw country!"
"Take that, gazebo!"
Kate the Chemist is CRAZY!!!!! I LIKE IT!
she need to smoke a fatty n relax
HC C Me toooo! She was so much fun! Made me forget about politics during the whole segment!
We need more Kates in our schools.
you mean everywhere
Moon yes!!!!!
My kid would loveeeee her.
If only we paid teachers decently!
I was a chemistry teacher years ago. These demonstrations were fantastic for building enthusiasm. Making fire was both my and my students favorite part of class
Had her as a professor-she’s the best! Would you believe she did those as demos in our lecture hall? Also, she’s exactly the same enthusiastic-wise while lecturing lol
Can we have fewer celebrity segments and more of this, please? Pretty please? :D
Love it how happy she is... Just like a kid.
She’s ace eh?
More like someone that needs to lay off the happy pills. Jeez she's annoying.
HandjesBreda yeah happy people suck!!smh
Ash White there's happy and there is psychotic
HandjesBreda right...you don’t know what psychotic means do you...in the same way you think she’s “over the top” I think you might be projecting A LOT.
I swear to God Stephen Colbert is just a big kid getting to experience all the things that we wish we could have experienced growing up!
Buy some starch and a torch, and you can experience it
John McLeod ax
Our 10th grade chemistry teacher popped the ballons for us it was amazing
John McLeod ...and he shares it with us. I love this show !
So is Jay Leno. Having interesting conversations with famous people, buying up tons of cool cars, and he didn't do politics, so even less time keeping up with the news and researching...
I had the honor of being one of Kate’s students for introductory chemistry, and she’s this enthusiastic all the time. I’m not the biggest chemistry fan, but she made it a pleasure to go to every class.
Now we know where the term "mad scientist" comes from. I'd love to be in her class.
SHE WAS MY PROFESSOR!!
I had her class freshman year, she set off the fire alarm twice so we had to evacuate the building. She was amazing.
she deserves her own show @netflix
Derrick Truong too girly
Yess definitely!
I'd love to see what she and Martin Polyakoff (from Periodic Videos) could come up with
I'm not so concerned with getting girls into science - they're doing fine on that score. We need to keep them there, and we need to get the boys to crack open a book at all. But I think this is a case where what's good for the goose is good for the gander. An engaging personality speaks to everyone.
A little bit too squealy for me personally, but if other people are into it then I say throw money at her to make a show with.
If it spreads the word and gets people excited about this kind of thing, there's really no downside.
Wow. We need more scientists and professors like her. What a charming and jolly lady she is! 😍
Colbert looks like those nerdy scientist in the movies developing weapons for the villain
Shayan Givehchian and I think he nailed, a future part in the next Hollywood megasummer blockbuster. Good guys are two a penny, but a good villain, he could do that.
Shayan Givehchian he looks like that Draken guy from Kim Possible
Nah, he looks like an older version of Q from the recent Bond films
Yes, James Bond, this shrink ray I had my minion Stephen Colbert develop shall help me take over the world, AND THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!
He looks like the Medic from Team Fortress 2
She is so energetic!
Its adorable
Maddie's face in the background at 6:31 was brilliant. I can just imagine her thinking "Stephen's going to set himself on fire. I think we're going to need to find a new gig, guys..."
i was waiting for Stephen to yell "IM SMAUG! at the end
Simon Vikhammer 🤣
Simon Vikhammer missed opportunity!!!
My favorite was the copper balloon, the color... I think some sorcery happened there
Hm, du sier ikke det..
Not sorcery... Science!
John Early
Hm, you don't say..
;)
Try watching other metals like Lithium and Calcium burn. It's beautiful and it's even funnier to do it in a flame test
Is that Kate the Chemist or Kate the Rockstar? 'Cos that was awesome.
Don't see why she can't be both.
The 1 Takes pretty sure she is.
"I'm sure it's fine"
- The motto of everyone's favorite high school science teacher
Curtis Holsinger Sorta like the shop teacher who's missing a finger or two.
If she was my teacher/professor I would have LOVED science in school.
My friend goes to UT and posts videos of her on snapchat all the time, and it is so much fun to watch her get so excited
UT student here, she's amazing!
My life could have been completely different if I'd had enough even a few school science moments like this! (;-) (;-) Damn, this audience had a helluva treat!
And people say science is boring.
Jason Jimerson I wanted to be a scientist, so bad. But now my 8 year old is in love with it. I’m so happy
Most of it is really not exciting if you don't have a basic understanding of physics and chemistry. It's understandable that people are bored by it when we don't emphasize education in the United States.
That is a sad truth!
Sometimes, it falls down on how Science is taught. We cannot all have the brilliance and passion of DeGrasse, Greene, or Kate in teaching Science. We wish but it's really not possible because not all teachers can be like them.
I was lucky to have a Chem teacher in high school who's a watered down version of Kate. She was fun, too, but not on the pyromania level. Lol. That teacher made me change my mind about Science.
@@anamahilom8978 its sad because most people in college dont want to teach. Most do it because they have to so they can get back to their research at the university.
Her enthusiasm is so awesome!! It’s on Mabel Pines levels!!!!!
Is it bad that now that I'm older and see what everyday life is like, anytime i see somebody(adult) this enthusiastic and/or happy, i automatically assume there on opiates.!?
Jonathan L it’s not bad...but definitely not a very wise mindset!
Alien Bacon lol yeah says more about my life than theirs.
Opiates are pain killers and soporifics. Dear Katie was far from somniferous.
Know your drugs.
Mabel Pines levels. I like it!
She's so bubbly and energetic; she makes science fun. I wish I had her as my chemistry teacher in high school. If she had a show, I would watch it.
with enthusiasm like that, i think she would make a great modern version of Bill Nye. i could definitely see children being able to really get into science with programs starring her kind of energy and content.
my friend at UT has her as a professor and she loves the class
Oooh, burning salts. We used to do that in high-school chemistry. Takes me back. For those curious about the experiments:
1. The reaction we see here is H2O2 + 2KI (Hydrogen peroxide + 2 x Potassium Iodide) ----> I2 + 2KOH + heat. This makes the solution really really hot, so the dish soap boils and creates a soap-bubble volcano filled with water vapour (the peroxide solution is only 35%, the rest is water). The tiny bottles are just colouring agent of the kind you can buy anywhere.
2. The first balloon is H2 + O2 + heat (Hydrogen + Oxygen) ---> H2O + fire. Hydrogen gas is flammable when mixed with air, and it takes very little for it to catch fire if it's exposed to heat (remember the fire triangle from grade school? Hydrogen is good fuel). When the balloon is doped with salts, the salts become part of the fuel and decompose in the fire. The salts create metal oxides, which are coloured (as an example, rust is a metal oxide of iron, and is brown). Magnesium burns yellow-white, copper green, sodium clear yellow, and so on. This is what happens in every 4th of July rocket you launch.
3. This classic reaction is C6H12O6 + 6O2 + heat (glucose + air) -> 6CO2 + 6H2O + fire, also known as "glucose oxidation" or more famously as "explosion in a custard factory". Corn starch is a form of sugar that's already mixed with air and very granular, so each grain of corn starch is surrounded by heat when it hits the flame and goes up as, well, you saw. Flour is similar to corn starch, but is less concentrated glucose (the saccharides are a bit longer-chained and takes longer to ignite) so it's not quite as energetic per pound.
I hope this video inspires more people to become chemists. It's a fun science.
#3: This is also why grain elevators explode.
Thanks so much for explaining the science behind the cool explosions! I probably learned some of this once upon a time in sophomore year chemistry, but that was a loooooong time ago lol.
The first experiment is a bit different. Heat is not the reason for the soap to create bubbles. Hydrogen peroxide always slowly decomposes into water and oxygen, the potassium iodide is added as a catalyst to speed up the process. The reaction would be 2 H2O2 --> 2 H2O + O2. The oxygen that is now quickly formed because of the catalysed reaction is what causes the soap to create bubbles and shoot out of the container (also note how Kate says they could light the oxygen that is formed by this reaction). A catalyst is never actually consumed in a reaction, it only speeds up a reaction.
LOVE chemistry!!!! ❤🔥🌋💫🎇💥🎆💫💟
Obviously the science props are displayed on a periodic table.
What you did there. I saw.
Ba-dum, tish! I’m here all week! Try the fish!
James Jumper
... I'm gonna find you. -_-
's all good... I have a tuning fork.
The chairs represent the anticide and lanthanide series - though they look a bit unstable.
Damn, someone REALLY likes what they do!
My friend has her as a professor and she gets so excited when she does in class experiments
I can see why he tought it was cocaine
😂😂😂
She's one of those _high energy_ people isnt she. We dont really get those here in the UK. You can sometimes find one at a holiday camp.
Sarah Bearheart .... no she the kind of chemist that makes highly purified meth in her garage.
took me a second to get but I laughed pretty hard. you're funny
she is the definition of mad scientist, but one that uses her powers for good.
The Force is strong with this one.
MORE OF HER!!!!
she is seriously hyper-kinetic
"I'm going to regret this. I'm about to go on vacation"
- "or not..."
i've never seen someone so excited about copper, magnesium, strontium, etc.. she's so entertaining!
He normally just breathes fire in the monologues at Trump.. Nice switch up 🔥
Raxta Emu ooooooooooooo, nice
This woman seemed to have way more fun than everyone else combined.
This woman needs to have her own show! Her enthusiasm for chemistry is contagious😀
Amazing to see this, she was my Chem teacher in college and she really has that much energy even in class! Awesome stuff Dr. Bieberdorf!
holy crap she has so much energy! i feel tired just watching her! she is pretty darn awesome though
"God, I'm gonna regret this. I'm about to go on vacation."
Um... didn't you just get _back_ from vacation? Like last week?
She should've said, "Well Stephen, it's either vacation or sick leave."
Lol
His tie would suggest this was filmed June 27th, before his vacation.
Nice spot Alex.
She implied it, "Or not"
She is so enthusiastic and happy. Loved this bit and we need more. This should be a recurring segment with more fun science stuff.
Favourite professor I’ve ever had!! So so lucky to learn chemistry from such an amazing teacher - so inspiring and passionate!
I shouldn't find her manic enthusiasm for fire attractive, but I just do.
dudekazoo Yea me too...
And to think I almost skipped this because the guest segments tend to be the worst ones...
There’s still DeGrasse Tyson and Greene.
The Glorious Champion of all that is Good and Just I agree.
Like Tom Hanks guestings, I don't skip guests who are Science-inclined. They're Colbert's best guests.
I skip most o the Hollywood ones. But Science guys and gals get my views every time.
The Glorious Champion of all that is Good and Just me too😂😂
I am glad I saw your comment bc I almost skipped it too. I loved this.
Loved it!! Glad to see Colbert trying out the fire breathing trick. Super Cool!!
We need thousands more chemistry teachers with her enthusiasm! Congratulations, Dr. Kate!!!!
I love her energy
She reminds me of the character Daisy Wick from Bones.
God I love her dark humour!!
I love how genuinely excited she gets by this, awesome lady is awesome.
I really enjoy learning from professors who are as excited about their profession as this professor is. It's not a job for them but a passion.
You're only a pyromaniac if the charges stick.
If you're a pyromaniac and something sticks, you become a burns unit patient.
She definitely delivers more bang for her buck...
I love her! Her enthusiasm is amazing.
She's so enthusiastic about all of it job and I just love it.
Always great to see science at the Colbert Show
5:24 Jon looks TERRIFIED
Yes!!!
Her enthusiasm is infectious!!!! She’s rad!
Her energy was amazing!!! Bring her back! 🔥🔥🔥
She totally channels ms frizzle, totally needs her own schoolbus... and also reminds me of moira brown #fallout3
Can we find a way to harness her energy? Because I'm sure she can power New York City.
That was genuine enthusiasm of which I have never and will never experience at work.
She definitely found her calling.
John's expression is truly priceless.
Chemistry is awesome! We're all chemicals!
Black Rod just say no 🤣🤣🤣
The way stephen looked at the end is more menacing than brian cranston in breaking bad.
This woman's energy and charisma are intoxicating, great segment!
She is absolutely DELIGHTFUL! We need more of her!
OMG 😂 she's adorable and this is the most Fun i had with any of Stephen's guests in a long time !👍🏻👌🏻🍻
If she was my chemistry teacher, I might have enjoyed the class lol. Super cool
I just fell in love with Kate - this was great!
She is really awesome and this was very satisfying to watch.
".. or not" hahaha
Maddie’s reactions in the background 😂 she’s so cute
I want to love my job that much. She's adorable! You can tell she loves chemistry a ton.
Omg she is absolutely adorable!!!! Please have her on more!!!
Colbert the Smaug
We need more science teachers like her!
The cornstarch thing "what does this demonstrate?" I'll tell you: it demonstrates how certain hydrocarbons that appear nonflammable can become very flammable when they atomize and if they're in a contained environment can be dangerously explosive (flour in silo fires has been known to cause massive explosions). These hydrocarbons include flour, cornstarch and non dairy creamer. "I can have so much fun at Denny's now" -Jason Murphy on The Modern Rogue
It's so cute how even tho these are such simple science experiments Kate still gets so excited and giddy. Bless her. And I'm with her on the whole pyromaniac thing, fiery science is the best science
I love her energy.
She looks crazy.
Someone should give this woman a show.
The right kind of crazy.
IMMEDIATELY LIKED AND FAVORITED
She was, great, so much fun! Have her on often cause i never ever miss an episode of you!!!!
Get her her own show.
He is finally living out his Tolkien fantasy. He is breathing fire.
Love her energy!
I love seeing people really excited about their field! She's so cute
she's so fun and cool
Ms.Frizzle!
She is clearly passionate about what she does and loves sharing it. Her enthusiasm is fantastic
She's the best late show guest I've ever seen I love her so much
KATE is so amazing!
Nice to see someone from UT, the campus is 5 minutes from me right now....
I love her! Passion is always so cool.
I absolutely love her. She knows exactly what is going to happen and she's still so exhuberantly excited.
