    I haven't watched the full section, but I can totally get behind what Pat said about the depreciation of the self due to the inter-connectivity of the world.
    I am an Engineer that uses a PLA 3d Printer, and while I can make my own designs, I am discouraged to do so as when I look online, there a thousands of free ones that work or have been worked on that are better than what I can do. This is leading me to not put the effort into not improving my 3d modeling skills so I cannot design the high end textured figures I want but cant find. Heck every person doing game design has to ask "why should they play my game if already exists".
    There is a documentary on Netflix about the Steampunk sub-genre, and one of the reasons given why Steampunk is traditionally set in the Victorian era (dispite the inherant racism/sexism of that period of history) is the fact that it is considered the last era in the last couple of centuries where technology was advancing slow enough for a not-genius person to be able to master a technological skillet (steam engines, blimps, etc) and not have it become obsolete near instantly after mastery. Just look at the number of people that don't use current Windows products because they just learnt how to confidently use the last set.

      GBDupree
      So here’s the thing, in July there was a rebroadcast of the moon landing for the 50th anniversary.
      I was watching it with a friend and some of the stuff they were showing said “simulation by CBS” in the corner but we didn’t notice it at first until I had said something and he was like “Okay, yeah I was about to say that looks fake, and I didn’t even notice that little disclaimer”
      Sometimes it would just say “simulation” and sometimes it would just not say anything… but audio transmissions from the actual moon landing were still going on
      I said “So the media may have eroded thousands of people’s trust in the country all to do something flashy to get more views”
      My friend replies, “Business for them as usual I guess”
      Also, there was some “rehearsal” and “pomp and circumstances” for the ACTUAL footage of the moon landing because they weren’t 100% sure the moon would have a solid walkable surface and they didn’t want to show the deaths of astronauts to the entire country as they sank into the moon like quicksand…
      So they landed, got out, walked around, made sure the cameras were good *THEN* redid them exiting the module for broadcast
      One thing that’s funny is the American flag was blown away and knocked down by the lunar module lifting back off into space, which is why the first moon landing has pictures of the flag much closer to the module but all the later landings have the picture.
      NASA kept that fact to themselves until people started looking at the surface with powerful enough telescopes and was like “Wait how did the flag get knocked down when there’s no wind?”
      NASA: Uhh… well you see…

    For once Pat actually has a clear and understandable thread of logic. What he’s basically saying is that conspiracy theories are as a response to nihilism. Our insignificance is frightening, and therefore we manufacture a significance that does not exist to combat that which is sublime. For anyone who doesn’t know, it’s not exactly a dictionary definition, but sublime basically means that something is greater and/or more terrible than we can possibly understand, and therefore it invokes strong and nebulous feelings, like despair or euphoria. Thusly, conspiracy theorists reject the idea of our insignificance as a defense against the natural progression of the sublime to that nihilistic feeling.
    Tl;dr: Not unlike religion, conspiracy theories counteract the despair that comes with the realization of our insignificance and/or an absolute, unavoidable end. Whether correct or not, the fact is both provide comfort, and so long as we do not delve into madness, both are healthy, as they let us find value even in this infinite nothing of our universe.

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 5 лет назад +3

      What? Most conspiracy theories INVOKE feelings of insignificance, like the government controlling you, or how there is nothing you can do about alien probing or whatever. In reality it's likely people need to be nihilistic that causes it, in opposition to religion's to needing meaning.

    • @StellaStarfall

      Yeah that's what's strange, most discoveries of long ago were first conspiracies, only to be found true. So while flat earth is obviously not true, who's to say what other conspiracies are true though? To say "you're wrong", is to be just like the flat earthers back in the old days, "you already believe something, so why change it?"
      I thought the fluoride being basically poison thing was believed, and verified, by everybody 10 years ago, now its healthy again? I mean if someone said they put mercury in the water no one would drink that, because that'd make you sick, so fluoride making you sick would make sense in that context. Obviously the crazier theories about it are surely fake, but most people don't believe those anyways.
      Basically, I think that no matter how much you don't believe something, don't disregard those who do, because if it becomes true, then the whole time you denied it you were no different than the flat earthers who stick their fingers in their ears and deny all evidence. And in a way all the evidence you can find that shaped your beliefs, the other person found equal evidence for theirs. You may be right, but in their life they have all the evidence, or were told all their life it was true by everyone even the news sometimes.
      No one is infallible, or knows everything perfectly, you might just get one detail wrong, so could they, who really knows. We all know gravity exists, but the way it works is still regarded as a theory (I'm pretty sure anyways, maybe I should have used a better example) so no one knows truly.

    As someone who's in a FB flat earth group (it's supposed to be a flat vs not flat discussion but all the admins believe it's flat, so I'm there just for human behavior research)
    I've noticed there's 2 big groups of flat earthers, and then one that's kind of disconnected
    One group are the religious, pretty self explanatory: god said it's flat in the bible, so it is
    The second group are the anti-religious, anti-authority: a lot of them were raised in christian/religious households, and when they came to their own truth, their truth being that "god don't real yo", they came to the conclusion that ALL authority figures must've been lying to them - teachers, scientists, the government, you name it, all of em. A very small minority of this group tries to do experiments to prove that it's flat, but they usually contradict each other
    And the third group are the kind of undecided, which are the minority: they look on it I guess from a more philosophical approach of "it looks flat when I look around, but I can't be bothered with doing experiments and shit, so it IS flat in my mind, but I'm not gonna push it on anyone else" - this group is probably the best approach, at least they're not loud about it
    Also a huge problem in the community is that they can't agree on why it's flat or why it's being hidden, and how the various mechanisms of the flat earth even work (what about the sun, is it a big spot light, or does it go around, orbiting the earth? is the earth a disc, or is it on a plane and surrounded by ice on all sides?). The obvious reason being the religious vs anti-religious groups

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 5 лет назад

      the reason we are the solar system is because our star is actually unnamed. there is no official name for our sun. everything in this system is in a solar orbit, an orbit that is relative to the sun, so this is the system relative to the sun, the solar system. if our sun had a proper name, we would call our system by that name too, just like we do to every other star (the betelgeuse system, etc).
      and some might say "well, we call our star "the sun", so that's its name", but it isn't. we just call whatever the local star is "the sun". it's not a name, it's a signifier for it being the local star, different from the other, further away stars. there is no official name for our star, just a classification for what it is. and to be fair, this solar system will probably always be called "the earth system", since that's the important part, so it's unlikely this star will ever get a name from any human.

    • @remobothic
      @remobothic 5 лет назад

      Because it is a system defined by its relationship (-ar) to the star Sol. Sol's system. The Solar system. In the same sense that it's called the Lunar surface, not the Luna surface.

    You know, I've prob enjoyed everything woolie and pat has played, watched, same 90s up bringing , dived into the same Carl Sagan books and jargon, loved science planetary stuff. Did the Gurren lagann, Kamen rider, ff, tokusatsu, RE series, Silent Hill, everything on the fandom list, and well, I don't know how Woolie came to deciding to leave his family's faith, but I guess I'll say this here. .
    I had a dream and I met Jesus face to face. this was after a harsh combination of some sort of terrible vile darkness kept gnawing me down for weeks.
    Up to this point it was always, 'MY WAY 'Science' or the highway!" I still do love science, nothing wrong with it. However life got dark along the way, you can say I felt like my mind was always being attacked by something menacing, thoughts, perhaps it was a neurological problem, or mental illness, as if I needed to get on some pills right away to make everything right, etc. But doctors couldn't help me, medicine couldn't help either, now I was messing with a lot of bad juju then, and it felt like dark forces just trying to beat me down to the point where I was fleeing from friend to friend, house to house, state to state, just get away. I finally arrived at the very end and simply collapsed, I gave up, who else was going to help me?
    I told him I knew he was there, Jesus, Mary, everyone really, (was I wrong to ask, was I a fool to attempt this act, I was at my wits end, what do I have to lose?) I prayed and slept.
    I was hit by a gold pillar of gold light; glittery and misty. The darkest snakes and insects scattered out of me. Then out of this light came out three angels blowing long trumpets in their hands. Quite.. crazy but what isn't normal or logical always is. I had then become a child in the dream.. I was in an old stone house, a table of tools on one side. There was a door before me, the latch was missing on it so I could see through the hole.. There was a sunset with a field of tall grass through that hole, and what sounded like children playing.. I pulled on the door but it was locked. The door wouldn't open, but then something came through the door, it transformed, swirled open with Jesus coming through it. Within his hands he was holding his heart which was on fire, he then handed it to me..
    I took it this fiery heart and placed it inside of me. The feeling I felt from this exchange was a happiness that blinded everything, imagine every triumph, goodness, the birth of your children, love for your parents, your girlfriend, wife, whomever, everything happening all at once, now multiply that by a million, that was the feeling, nothing mattered at all, except this burning feeling which was of unconditional love.
    HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART and what changed my perspective, and would change the most hardcore atheist or agnostic immediately if they experienced this same experience.
    I never had read the bible up to this point in my life.
    JOHN 10:9 "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture."
    EZEKIEL 36-26 "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."
    REVELATION 3:20 "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with him, and he with Me."
    So as you can see I had no prior knowledge of the bible or these scriptures but there they were. As always, it's up to you to decide what you want to believe, but there's no price. I can promise you with 100% certainty, he will talk you in your dreams and show you things if you're serious, and some forces will interrupt you and tell you differently. But you have to drop the curtain of logic and walk through it with open eyes, "Here I am, my guard is down for you, this one moment, let's talk." I feel God all the time now, imagine if we forgot air existed, and we forgot about it every 5 seconds we remembered, that's how reaching out to God is, Jesus the man himself, he's there, but don't forget this time.
    Woolie your bro loves you, your mother, everyone, maybe they gave you enough prays, and Pops above is using me to tell you this, but its all true man, everything in that book is 100% damn true.
    Thanks for reading, a long time fan.
