    This is a super versatile router lift and storage cabinet built around the Rockler ProLift router lift that lives in the extension wing of my table saw accompanied with some t-track.
    Here's some of the intricacies of my design: The wider t-track was notched out to allow for the t-bolts from the fence to slide into the blue t-track. I swapped out the hardware that comes with the fence for some cam clamps. The whole cabinet is made from ½” aromatic cedar Purebond plywood that I had left over from my dresser build. The drawer bottoms are all made from 1/4” plywood and those function as drawer bottoms, drawer slides, drawer pulls, and even drawer stops because of the orange PVC piece mounted to the front that I plan on using to label the drawers. The drawers hold wrenches, feather boards, push blocks, and things like that. But most of the drawers are router bit holders, appropriately enough. Each of the holes in those drawers has a combined ¼” and ½” hole so each hole can hold either sized shank router bit. Rockler also makes plastic inserts that perform the same function if you don’t have a lazy millennial in your shop to drill all those holes for you. The door over where the router is located is made from an acrylic sheet with embedded wire mesh. This is a scrap piece that I got my hands on from Jimmy Diresta. It’s mounted using some spring loaded hinges that were picked from the trash, so those hold the door shut. I reused the legs that came on the saw, but drilled and tapped some holes into the side of the cabinets and bolted them on. It’s actually a much more solid solution than what came on the saw, but I’m getting off topic. The dust collection is combined between the table saw and router table and hooks into my small Dust Right dust collector. This is part of what has enabled me to keep my shop entirely free from duct-work. The smaller hose for the fence is held in place with a metal clip on the side of the cabinet and installed in the fence when needed.

    Sorry if either of these are repeats. I havent read all 170 comments: 1) what model saw is that? Id like to look it up and compare the dimensions to my saw. and 2) what are the main differences between your old lift and the new router lift? Worth a $370 upgrade cost?

    • @JackmanWorks
      @JackmanWorks  6 лет назад

      1. it's a sawstop PCS with a 36" fence
      2. I think the difference in cost between the 2 lifts is closer to $150, but definitely still a chunk of change. The new one is definitely a lot nicer and whether it's worth it depends on your situation, but for me it was worth it just for the aluminum insert plate alone instead of the plastic one which will sometimes flex with smaller pieces.

    ****Edit, this was a mis-post to another video I was watching. Not sure how it ended up here.
    I think I'm going to get beat up on this one, but here goes... I think I might like this video, but I gave it a thumbs down. I couldn't hear anything except the background music. As far as I could tell, the workmanship seemed liked something I would enjoy, but for old guys like me, I literally can't hear the voices over the music. Turning up the volume, or adjusting my hearing aids, just doesn't work. That's not the way sound works. Some day, all you young guys will understand.

    • @JackmanWorks

      That is so crazy! I've never watched this video! The video I meant to post to definitely had talking. Very strange. I might be getting old, but I've been working with computers for thirty plus years and I'm quite tech-savvy. I haven't the slightest idea what happened. I got rid of the thumbs down and gave it a thumbs up, LOL. I did watch this video now, and enjoyed it. Subscribed.

    Paul you did an amazing job on this build. I can’t even remember how many cool parts to this video there are!! One thing to me that stuck out of course was the router bit holders/drawers and then even the opacity (if this is the right word) of the door that has a glow of an amber bulb on the inside. Wonderful job Paul and who cares if it’s overkill....it’s what you wanted and that’s what you got! Thanks for sharing too!!

    We're living in a time where food costs more than ever, housing costs more than ever, and pay hasn't adjusted to make up the difference for the inflated cost of living, meaning that my younger peers have to work harder than ever to make ends meet. But by all means, let's perpetuate the stereotype that Millennials are lazy. That's fine.

    I dont know how to phrase it but at the begining when I saw the images changing at thd rythm of the music. I noticed that the framing of the action and the image compositions are very important. Because it's easier for the viewer to move their eyes slowly in a circle in the middle of the screen falowing the action while noticing the back ground.
    Hope you understand?😓

    • @simonlaplante7190

    You have a cnc, but decided drilling a ton of holes by hand would be more fun?

    • @JackmanWorks
      @JackmanWorks  6 лет назад

      "It's not all about knowing how to use a tool, but when to use it" - Confucius or something like that
      The drill was much faster. I didn't show it, but I used a v bit just to mark out the location of all of the holes (like a 1/8" dot) so I didn't have to measure them, then I drilled them out. To get perfect circles of that small of a diameter on the CNC I'd have to turn the speeds way down.

    Everybody does the holes in plywood to store the bits, including me, but I've found that over time storing them like that makes the shanks rust. It's been on my to do list to replace it with plastic for years. Just in case you wanted to redrill all those holes again.

    Nice but...I picked up a shaper. Routers can't take 3/4, 1" spindle/bits. And I've not seen a 3 or 5hp router. If you make panels, custom trim/beading daily, a router will not cut it (pun!). When you factor in all the costs you just demonstrated (oh, and you are using up the Sawstop table space), its not that more to get a 3HP shaper. Still, for those with a small shop, this video gives you a decent option. But not a production one. (Thanks to your videos, its been harder to find used pallets! LOL!!)

    I gotta say you used 2 word that are in my non-like column: Ultimate and Rockler. But I gave ur vid a shot anyway and am glad I did. (Meaning Thumbs up to you!) Ultimate because I find anything with that superlative is, well, NOT and Rockler because they on the very bottom of the cheap list if u get my drift. Good quality stuff most of the time though.
    You turned me on to how to make bit drawers - half way thru with 1/2" then finish with 1/4 and add bottom -SMART! Oh and the t-track idea was up there too.

    I am estimating that you would’ve spent close to $1000 or so out of pocket to buy these items from Rockler. Just for building a router cabinet and spending that kind of money seems a little outrageous…even for a professional woodworker. It also seems a little far fetched to have to spend $1000 for all these amazing tools and parts by Rockler, and still having to build it. If I spend around $1000 just for the router cabinet…best believe I ain’t building a damn thing for it spending that kind of money! Lmao great build though, and thanks for sharing!

    sorry if this has been asked but I couldn't find it readily...what material is your wing made out of? It looks like MDF as it's being routed but not sure if the top is painted or if there's a thin laminate. Just curious as I'm considering doing something similar. Thanks

    Bad ass router table and I really liked the bit holder idea. Great video editing also...

    Clearly this build was a labor of love, even if you are a millennia! Do U have enough router bits?, LOL! This old " hippy " appreciates the old school application in most of this build. I didn't see a single pointer hole on this or perhaps U did use some & I simply can't remember... Beautiful build here & thanks for sharing it...

    Nice video, and detailing on this. Where did you get your branding iron?

  • @LutherBuilds
    @LutherBuilds 6 лет назад +1

    I think the best part of the video for me was the use of your branding iron. I have one of my logo and never thought of making anything else with it other than branding my work. I could make drawer pulls, keychains or even brand pieces of 1/8" plywood to sell or trade in place of stickers. Awesome build as always.

      Yeah man! That thing pops up everywhere, super useful for my drawer pulls, and also in places where people will never see it 😄
