That whole sequence was masterfully done!!
-The shot of her putting on the facemask of her helmet and opening the outer doors, and we see the black void reflected in the glass.
-Naomi practically looking right into our souls before she turns and runs out the airlock.
-Her initial panicked "No!!" just after she's left the ship, before she gathers herself and starts signing.
-How she gave the line "See me Alex. See me"
-The shot of Naomi signing and drifting away from us
-The subtle explosion sound effect incorporated into the musical score when she makes the sign for "explosion hazard"
-the musical score for this sequence in general
-The tension when Alex and Bobbi finally spot her and have to find a way to rescue her. All while we know Naomi's on the clock as they spoke.
-The camera shot and sound staying in Naomi's point of view.
-As Naomi accepting that she was going to die, whispering "thank you", as her suffering will finally end
-Naomi feeling the need to apologize to Alex, like she didn't want to pass on and leave an insult, (she made in frustration) to one of her friends, standing.
Naomi's shock and subsequent relief when Bobbi arrives.
How the character of Alex basically dies doing what he loves, flying a badass spaceship.
-And in the end gives his life for his friend.

Holden complained of experiencing something similar to that each time he went through the gate, but Fred had no idea what he meant. If they hadn't gotten round to clearing up that proto-molecule on the roci at that point it could explain the difference.

Here's an excerpt from the books of the final scene of the season, from Sauveterre's perspective as they pass through the ring. There are no spoilers for anyone who has watched through season 5. It just describes the same event from the show.
“Approaching the ring, sir,” Keller said from the navigation controls. “Passing through in three. Two…”
Keller fell apart. No, that wasn’t right. Keller was where she had been, sitting as she had been sitting. But she was a cloud now. All of them were clouds. Sauveterre held up his hands. He could see them so perfectly: the ridges of his fingertips, the spaces between the molecules, the swirl and flow of his blood beneath them. He could see the molecules in the air - nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide all bouncing madly against each other, obscuring some more profound space between them. A vacuum that penetrated them all.
I’m having a stroke, he thought. And then, No. Something else is wrong.
“Kill the drive!” he shouted. “Turn about!” And the waves of his words passed through the visible but invisible air in an expanding sphere, bouncing against the walls, shuddering where they intersected with the cries of fear and a blaring Klaxon. It was beautiful. The cloud that was Mister Keller moved her hands and miraculously didn’t slip through the vast emptiness of her control deck.
He saw the sound coming in the rush of molecules before it reached him and he heard the words. “What’s going on? What’s happening?”
He couldn’t see the image on the screens to know if the stars were there. All he could sense were atoms and photons of the thing itself, not the pattern they made. Someone was screaming. Then someone else.
He turned and saw something move. Something else, not another cloud like himself, like the others, like matter. Something solid but obscured by the emptiness of material like a shape in the fog. Many shapes, neither light nor dark, but some other thing, some third side of that coin, passing through the spaces between the spaces. Rushing toward them. Toward him.
Sauveterre did not notice his death.

@@TealJosh It's better that they didn't try. The result would have been something like a weird render of what we in our macroscopic world think atoms and molecules look like up close, and if they had tried to render what atoms and molecules might actually look like - as clouds of "where exactly are the particles, and what is their momentum" probablities - no one would have understood what they were seeing. Not to mention that it would be quite a challenge to properly handle the scale difference between the human scale and the quantum scale.
I think that they did a decent job. The environment becomes translucent as the atomic bonds fall apart, and then the "Langoliers" come in to erase the Barkeith from our reality. While people might not understand what exactly happened, there are no doubts about the result.

@@BernardoPC117 That scene in the book is told from Sauveterre's perspective (The captain of the barkeith). So you see how he sees what happens before he dies. It's pretty great even if you don't read the books just to give an idea of what's happening.

The final flight of Alex Kamal. After signing off with Holden, Alex put the Razorback into a hard burn, but he didn't activate the Juice. Maybe it was an error brought on by haste, and maybe he had no choice. Razorback had been flying continuously for a very long stretch without being berthed. Her Juice reservoir might have been depleted. Bobbie took the stress of an unprotected high-G burn in stride because she's young and in outstanding condition, but Alex is more of a couch potato, proceeding on guts alone and this time it just wasn't enough.
He looked a bit rocky coming out of the burn, and at one point said he was feeling tired. (In season 3 Bobbie had told Crisjen that relaxing is what kills you in a stroke.) Once Alex decoded Naomi's "do not approach" message and Bobbie had exited the ship to rescue Naomi, Alex had nothing to do but wait, and it was then his platoon of guardian angels finally let him down. (At least they didn't let him get blown to smithereens.) Knowing he had accomplished his rescue mission, he relaxed, and then a stroke took him quickly and gently away.

The Laconia exposition this episode is literally just the tip of an immensely scary iceberg. If you go back and check S05E02 (back when Alex visited the Martian War College), Sauveterre wore a unique yellow patch on his left shoulder that none of the other Martians wore afaik. That patch had a black Spartan helmet. Sparta back in the old days was in a place called Laconia.

They were disintegrated by the beings that defeated the Protomolecule/Gate builders. We first seen them at the end of season 4.
Marco is that simple. But, this wasn’t his plan. It was the plan the rogue Mars faction, that saw the opportunity with those structures that they found on Laconia, which will have big consequences later on.

That whole sequence of Naomi's rescue was masterfully done!!
-The shot of her putting on the facemask of her helmet and opening the outer doors, and we see the black void reflected in the glass.
-Naomi practically looking right into our souls before she turns and runs out the airlock.
-Her initial panicked "No!!" as the enormity of what she's done , before she gathers herself and starts signing.

So at the end, it pretty much is that simple. It's implied that the Martians at the end aren't acting in the interest of Mars, they're defecting wholesale, taking their people, pissing off through the ring and boobytrapping it behind them to be their own thing on "Laconia". They needed protomolecule for whatever they're doing and the price was ships, which they were willing to pay because they could just steal them from Mars on the way out.

Was wondering how they were gonna end alex's story since i saw a news about him not returning for season 6. For those who don't know, the actor who played alex in the series was accused of sexual assault and it wasn't just one person. As a result of that, his character was killed off the show. Forgot to add this. His death was handled horribly though, that might be the most unemotional death of a main cast in a series that i've ever seen.

Yeah I read that he had been approaching women at fan conventions etc and there had been an independent investigation as there were a number of complaints, hence he was killed off in the show unlike the character that is in the books, Fred in the books was killed by a stroke under hard burn so I suppose they had to have him shot instead to accommodate Alex stroking out.

    Hint:
1.The final scene is related to the destroyers of the Protomolecule species. The Protomolecule specie was a hive mind, they communicated to everything in their whole civilization. They were wiped out by something or somebody between the spaces, and all their infrastructures became lifeless. The stuff in the Sol system was a dormant seed sent in an asteroid through the space for milions of years with the purpose of building a portal, colonization, so it was preserved from the destruction. It's the Intelligent component that the alien planets need to function. The Martian defectors needed the stuff to make their recently acquired alien planet to function.
2.The purpose of the planet Ilus was to be one of many power generators for the alien civilization (in the book 4 Miller explains to Holden). Laconia was a ********...that thing Martians love the most. To see perhaps in the next season, though I don't think they start explaining book 7 since it happens decades after.

So intense this season 5 of Expanse and gotta say that i am so grateful for the pure timing for this season is SPOT ON!
1st thought: Phillip’s arc is going in the direction of taking over the cause from his father (Marcos) in a dramatic and violent way. Remember that Marcos said to him “you are nothing without me”.
Phillip will be more to fear than Marcos come next season.
2nd thought: Marcos talked about the master plan being all about commanding agriculture and being independent and better than earth. He played the earth’s with the rocks but the end of the finale showed that he played the Mars squad. He said “you have your system and we have ours”. I think they got played by Marcos and got bit by the proto molecule stigma that got the ring system shutdown.
    Playing with some serious fire.
The hope is now in our heroes, as it always has been, for the sake of humanity to prove that WE can do better/the right thing in the universe.

    Here's your new status quo:
    1. The Free Navy now controls the Ring Gate.
    2. Mars is hobbled, has lost a large segment of their fleet to a rogue faction.
    3. Earth is hobbled by a global humanitarian disaster as they try to recover from the asteroids.
    4. Drummer is a ship without a port in the Belt. She can go to Tycho at best but Marco has sympathizers everywhere. She can't ever relax. Plus, Tycho and every station is in survival mode. Plus, it probably is on Marco's target list.
    5. The Roci crew is at the moment: Holden, Naomi, Amos, Bobbie (I hope!), Clarissa, and Bull.
    6. The beings living inside the space between the gates are lashing out. So now gate traversal looks perilous.
    7. Laconia, where they're playing with protomolecule because sure why not, looks to be a problem if they succeed.

Ships don't operate indefinitely, and if the attack on Pallas does anything, it reminds them how perishable their support chain is.
Marcos has lost the support of the Martian renegades. The UN still has a superior fleet to Marco's /reliable/ vessels.
The situation of Drummer's faction is probably common among the Belter factions and crews--no real loyalty to Marco. Earth's best bet would be to offer sanctuary and resources at Luna to any Belter factions willing to defect from the Free Navy. The UN could also take and guard Tycho and make it a sanctuary.
At some point, the remaining MCRN is going to get its act together as well.
Ceres isn't going to last long without water...and that's also under UN control.
Marco's entire plan relied on a quick capitulation by Earth. His plan fails if they deny it. That was pretty much the plan of Imperial Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.
