I lived in Aberdeen in the 60s.I’m English..still watch the white heather club every new year..loved it ..Would move back to Scotland tomorrow..lovely people..
I met Andy Stewart when he was performing at the North pier pavilion in Blackpool. Such a lovely guy and down to earth. Happy to pose for a couple of photos with my late Aunt and myself. Happy memories. 🏴
We went to see Andy and other popular singers of the day at a High School in Hamilton, Ontario. We were fairly recent immigrants and it was wonderful to hear the tunes we were so familiar with.
Came here on a trip down memory lane. My Nana loved watching Andy Stewart and I would watch with her. I didn’t realise at the time that part of it was probably because her husband (who died in 1937 when my Dad was 5) was from Glasgow. I think Andy’s voice may have reminded her of my Grandad. (She met and married him when he was in the RAF near Ameysbury, Wiltshire, where she lived). Such a long time ago now!
What a great find tonight. It brought back so many happy memories, why don't they replay this on New Years Eve? I will be playing it over and over, I also went to Arbroath High School where Andy's Dad was a teacher - happy days!!
Aye for sure ....... wight a meenit! New Year's EVe ? Far d'ye cumfae? Thocht it wis HOGMANAY ! Och it disnae matter ..... I ken fit ye mean. Yes Hogmanays aren't the same any more - just re-hashes of daily pop. Yes the muckin o Geordie's Byre - just been doin that myself - and often think of Andy - just one of those rural things.
As a child born in England from a Scottish family we religiously watched Andy every time he appeared on the box. New Year was the only time we were allowed to stay up and join the festivities and by brother, being black haired had to go out to the neighbours and bring them the greetings. Not at midnight because the neighbours may be in bed but 9 o'clock the next morning as back then people did not lay late in bed because they needed to get up to light coal fires.
Lovely to watch and remember as a wee boy in Edinburgh! As the last hour of 2020 approaches, I remember those New Year shows on the BBC. Now I see in 2021 in Kampala, Uganda. Happy New Year to one and all!
Great man , so much passion after watching this on my I pad I feel a real compassion for Andy . People might criticise him for not being around his family but look at the joy he did give them and the world!
I grew up listening to this SUPERB music and have fond memories of it all. WWII - and all its horrors/deprivation no doubt helped it succeed. Three cheers from this Sasenach! RIP Mr. Stewart.
Andy Stewart was part of my childhood and I will never forget ..... so funny that like me, all his chlidren, children of a Scottish father have English accents =)
Same here! My granny had the Andy Stewart records on the radiogram every Hogmanay. My grandad would be muttering away sitting in the chair annoyed that she was playing Andy Stewart.
The garage I worked at used to service his car. Only saw him there once but still recognise his wife. Remember his dad with great affection, "Granpa" Stewart was well liked at school.
A few years before Andy's very sad death, my wife and I were sitting in a restaurant at the Highland Show at Ingliston. We became aware of a couple and their children sitting at the next table, and realised it wss Andy and his family. Just a quiet happy family like any other, with a cheery smile in our direction, no prima donna airs and no acting, genuine and quietly friendly. A memory we treasure.
Thanks so much for having provided this. Remember how big Andy was amongst Canadian Scots diasporans in the 1960s. We who, after a century and half, were otherwise almost totally de-racinated.
It Is Early Morning In The USA At 5:54AM EST. I Haven't Went To Sleep Yet, But I Loved Watching The Video. I Remember My Uncle From Scotland That Came Over For A Visit To Ohio USA In 1973 And, Got Me Interested In Scottish Music, It Is In My Blood As A Part Scot! I Have Grown To Love Andy Stewarts Music Over The Years. I Love Singing Ballads Like Loch Lomond And Such And Have An Irish Tenor. Check Out My Karaoke Videos, Imagine If I Could Learn Some Of Andy Stewart Songs, That Would Be Something! My Most Favorite Is Scottish Soldier. R.I.P. Andy Stewart. I Loved The Music Since I Was A Young Lad. SingingTimberwolf-Phil-Lover-Of-Horses.
I recall when he took ill in the late 80,s it was said he suffered from a food allergy. Aberdonians stll miss him so much at His Majesties and the Tivoli ,25 years after his death although he,s not performed and starred at the Tivoli after the 1960,s due to its closure but I stand corrected. All my relatives loved his clean Scots humor and great voice as a top Ambassador who represented the kindly coothie welcoming image of Scotland to the world unlike these awful Brexit mob today.
I miss the fun of new year's eve watching this. Now they are so bloody serious and poe-faced. Talk about pretentious.... that's the useless BBC nowadays.
Andy loved Aberdeen and starred at His Majesty,s and the Tivoli in the 1960,s,the golden age of the White Heather club on tv too. The little film that remains is a treasure trove of great Scots entertainers ,hosted by Andy but unfortunately in those days, tapes often got deleted. He did take some criticism for representing the kitschy side of Scots music in his modern popular songs like Donald where,s your troosers, but 25 years after his death, partly due to the large amount of trashy music of today,he comes across well from a golden age 50-60 years ago.
Jools Holland said of Andy Stewart was famous for his New Year's show he was on tour in Scotland at the time and found out that he had died and to at we went to grave just to show his prestece

Stu rzstrom He certainly died at 59. Don't know where the lonely alcoholic bit comes from though. He died in his wifes arms less than 12 hours after playing to a crowd of over 1000 at Edinburgh's Usher Hall.
What a Lovely guy and a lovely family!

Me too. Miss Inverness where I lived for 27 years.

Thank you John Cairney for your fine words . Spoken from the heart .
I would have expected no less : knowing you as I do.

Always loved Andy from when I was wee girl. Loved the white heather club too. Just the best. Wish we could bring it all back especially for new year.
May you and yours look forward to each and every day of 2021
and your Mondays be as good as your Fridays.

Met him in the 80's in Aviemore, spoke a while and shook his hand..a nice man. I'm happy to have passed a wee while with him. RIP Bonny lad

Brings back the memories of Andy at Hogmanay.
The BBC would cross over to the White Heather club.
Fond memories.
Brings a tear to the eye.
Loved singing his songs along with my Granny and Mum.
Andy had a classic Scottish 'teuchter' face. I saw loads of guys with those features when I lived in the Highlands as a kid.
A few years before Andy's very sad death, my wife and I were sitting in a restaurant at the Highland Show at Ingliston. Total legend.

Ah yes, I remember it all very well.
John Cairney's appreciation is very beautiful
Glad she said 'Arguably " I would certainly argue with her.
Lovely singer
Wonderful
great seeing Robert Wilson too.
18:56 Kind of sad to hear what Ewan had to say in the way it was edited. I feel like there is a lot more context to it that was left out.
What a singer. Proud to be Scottish.
"Wind blow high, let the wind blow low, threw the streets me kilt I'll go"

Died a lonely alcoholic aged 59. Strange watching this, different times. Rip andy.
Really dumb ass WTF
Stu rzstrom He certainly died at 59. Don't know where the lonely alcoholic bit comes from though. He died in his wifes arms less than 12 hours after playing to a crowd of over 1000 at Edinburgh's Usher Hall.
He died of a heart attack following a charity concert in 1993.
