- I live offgrid and am working toward living a hunter gatherer lifestyle combined with other bushcraft and homestead lifestyle skills. It's just me, my three dogs, my eight horses, two goats and eleven chickens out here in the sagebrush hills or at my farm property on a creek.
A few years ago I made the decision to finally live the life I'd wanted to live since I was young and these videos are of me learning, and practicing the skills needed for that lifestyle. Life is a whole lot better Over on the Wild Side!
I couldn't help but notice that when you sat down in that creek, you voice went up about three notes. I guess that just proves you're human. Nice video!
Haha! Yeah it was cold. And that was me being calm haha!
It's the title "cowboy camping" which caught my attention.
I was thinking I'm going to like it. And I did.
😊
Cool, thanks, I’m glad to hear it.
Great content bud! I followed you here from r/Survival
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback and the follow! I’ll keep making them.
@@OverOnTheWildSide thanks for letting me live my dream vicariously through you. :)
@@OverOnTheWildSide This was fun to watch, exactly what I was lookin for
@@bryson750 I’m glad to hear. I plan to get back to making more soon.
Cowboy camping for real, great stuff.
Not sure why this channel has not got a lot more subscribers. Thanks for sharing your trail, land, animals, time, and life with us all. Gods speed to you and your family. 👍🇺🇸
Thanks for being here!
Just came across this channel and I'm glad I did, just what I've been looking for!
I’m glad to hear that, thank you. I hope to get back to making videos soon.
Glad to found your channel.
Thank you, glad you’re here.
Looks like beautiful country
I think so, I love open desert land.
when I make my coffee from coffee beans. I put them on an piece of cloth, bring the corner together holding it with one hand. against a hard surface and beat it with a rock or piece of wood. you' re done in no time. works great!
I’m gonna give that a try! My method takes forever.
Chard... Burnt= horse no games so good luck with your lifestyle choices thanks 👍🥇✌️💯
Found you through your post at /r/survivalism. As a Civil War buff & camping nut I love this.
Awesome! I appreciate hearing that from a fellow living historian.
Awesome, enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing, keep looking up!
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Based on your name I’m guessing you found me through Born 100 Years Too Late, I subscribed to you back.
I really like your videos love the great outdoors the old ways , appreciate your support and information, keep looking up!
Just came across your channel. You're doin what I often daydream about.
Congrats on doing so good. Also awesome that you brought your goats.
I'm not sure why but I've always enjoyed seeing videos or especially actual TV shows with people screwing up talking and just saying it again instead of editing it out. It just shows that it's still real life
Thanks, I’m glad to hear that.
You are living the life… I am from Croatia but from young age I feel like I needed to be born in wild west age.. hope one day I will visit your country
I love hearing how the spirit of the West encaptures people in various parts of the world. When you make it over I’m sure you’ll love it. Btw you have a fascinating country as well!
Thank you can't wait to see more
All the way from New Zealand!
That’s awesome! Thanks! I’ll be making more and working at making them more and more watchable.
Vids awesome man. God bless!
Thanks! God bless as well my friend.
Came across your videos after watching waypoint survival and I'm glad I did. Very nice and VERY simple like how life should be. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Awesome, thanks for saying so. Waypoint is a great channel.
I like your videos, a lot. We're all learning. I wear wool almost every day and have been doing so for many years. One thing though, don't let it get wet. :) Dry wool is awesome at keeping you warm, especially when layered. And on warm days, a single layer of wool won't overheat you. But wet wool is no good. Wet wool holds water, making it very heavy. It also takes what seems like forever to dry. To dry it, ring out the water. Then lay it flat on a rack. If you hang it, it will stretch a mile. And then wait. So there you have it, as you discovered, don't get your wool wet. When wet, it's warming properties no longer exist. And never put wet wool in a warm clothes dryer. The heat will shrink it down to child size.
Very imaginative. Keep it up.
Thank you
There is a tent design called the Whelan that is open in front and has flaps or wings that extend on the sides .might give you room for the dogs.
I just googled it. It’d be interesting to see how it does in the wind. My goal is to have flaps that’s close in rather than out like wings.
That's know-how. I also recommend a 'soogans"--- canvas cowboy bedroll (from Cariola's, Elko).
Bedrolls are wonderful, the problem is that since I focus on 1860 I’m pretty restricted. No one I know has seen bedrolls show up historically until the late 1880’s if I remember right.
Just found your channel. really like what you’re doing. Keep the 1800 COWBOY contact coming
Will do! I expect it to be a year of lots of Cowboy Camping videos.
My man!!!! Living the dream... my dream. I wish I could detach myself to the day to day I've become custom too I could transition fairly easily but you went full bore I will be sharing and continuing to watch Grant content unfiltered
Thanks, I’m glad you found it.
Awesome video 👍..
Im from Virginia and we stayed a week in late fall hunting season camping and had to take baths in the river so I had to laugh there cause know how you felt 😁that water will take your breath away sometimes
That’s commitment! Thanks!

Thanks my friend! I was happy with what I woke up to, time to go make another one.
Just found this channel, I've been looking for a channel like this for so long! I can't wait for the next cowboy camping video!
I can’t wait to make it! There may be a cooking ep next though...
And yeah, I was looking for a channel like this myself and then decided to start making videos that I wanted to watch. I’m really glad other people are liking them!

Sitting in the creek gets a follow from me, love from the UK, great to see someone not cutting corners to be comfortable 👍
That went on the wrong video, but as I'm watching you now, that leather pack I've not seen one of them before.
Thanks for watching and following! Which leather pack? I’ll see if I can find the one you mean.
@@OverOnTheWildSide youtube is doing my head in, im watching your sleep system fail vid now, the leather pack is meant to be on another video 🤭.
Do you show what shape of the tarp that makes your tent anywhere?
@@munchh2007 oh gotcha, was it my shooting bag?
Both of my tarps are 7x8, I bought canvas by the yard and had it stitched up by an upholsterer.
Howdy partner. Great campin'! Keep up the good work pal. 👍🤠👍
I’ve been really enjoying your cowboy camping to the point I’m going to try it ! Plan on doing a hunting trip south Texas .
I’m glad to hear it!
Thanx a Mingo ol pard! I appreciate your being. Extremely motivational. As I can't fit into the mold modern society expects. This is a lifestyle I'm still working towards. It's amazing how powerful the matrix is. But to be able to completely cut ties with it...az god intended all the way around.
I wish you good fortune in doing so. I’m very glad to have broken free.
Good stuff! I'm jealous... I wish I had access to the real estate to do just such a trip! But... I'm stuck in the middle of the concrete jungle! There's plenty of people "camping" in the park down the street from my house... I've been really tempted to go over there with my shelter half and gum blanket and see if anyone notices!
Thanks for sharing your adventures, let's us urban-locked folks live vicariously!
Thanks Justin! That’d be awesome, get some pics haha! But seriously, if you’re ever in the area hit me up.
@@punjivr it's not an issue of worrying about what others think. I'm in a nice community in the Los Angeles area. If I were to camp in the nice parks (that don't already have a homeless encampment) I have to worry about the police running me off. If I camp in the parks that already have homeless encampments, and the police have given up on enforcement of any laws prohibiting overnight camping, I have to contend with the possibility of the homeless population realizing I'm an interloper, and may be put in a dangerous situation.
@@punjivr yes, but in order to get anywhere primitive that's not inundated with people trying to take Instagram photos, I'd have to travel pretty far.
I have that same carbon steel Lodge skillet. I bought a twig stove to use with it. Takes very little wood to boil water or cook bacon.
Yeah it works really well.
I want to go camping with a band of horses, 2 goats and 3 dogs! im curious how you would deal with bad weather if you didnt have the truck as back up. like survival tips on how to shelter in a thunderstorm on the steppe, having the horses with you ect.
At my place in the Wenas I have a willow cove that’s better than the open but yeah, if I were out in the open I’d have to roll up in my tarp and blankets and wait it out I suppose.
Would be awesome to lay out there at night with the fire going. So glad I found this channel, really relaxing and interesting to watch.
Very enjoyable videos. I applaud your desire to move to a more primitive, less tech.- driven (?) lifestyle with activities centered on the cowboy world. We are out there! I really look forward to seeing more practical, hunter/gatherer and cowboy outdoor content. Should be fun. I like your comment that you are learning as you go. Honesty...good! I loved seeing your "four wheel drive" horse transport; not always easy when on-the-trail. All the best, "pard", from Montana. P.S.: your clothes are spot-on. :)
Thanks a ton! I do look forward to more forage/eating in the videos. I’m planning one where it makes the majority of my food on my camp trip.
Great content. Being horseback is always a wonderful time!
That’s for sure!
There's something surreal about a modern day cowboy larping like an old school wild west cowboy by a campfire using period correct equipment saying "Life is good." A statement echoed by California inspired backpackers and thru hikers. I guess deep down, no matter what background you come from, we all experience the wilderness the same way, just with our own personal quirks.
Definitely.
Awesome content! (And Nice music by the way heheh). Found you in r/Survival too, keep up with the good work!
Thanks a ton!
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who rides out with a goat entourage.
Goats are wonderful
You're an inspiration. I'm at a crossroads in my life right now and I think I've found the direction I want to go. Thanks Wrangler.
I’m glad to hear it.
New subscriber here from singapore. Goodluck buddy and stay safe
Thanks! Btw I got to visit your country for an afternoon once, it’s beautiful!
Absolutely loved the video! Before I ask a question, just wanted to let you know it comes from a place of curiosity, not criticism.
In the video, you had a bonfire going near some fallen leaves. I'm not familiar with wild camping regulations (being from Korea and all), but I'm really interested in trying cowboy camping someday. For campfire safety, how did you make sure the fire stayed contained and didn't spread?
Thanks again for the awesome videos!😄😄😄
Thanks!
The wood I was burning doesn’t throw sparks, also it’s a pretty small fire that had rocks around it.
High winds can make it more dangerous or if the wood throws sparks. So the key is being familiar with what you’re using and being as safe as needed. In my opinion.
Just found your channel brother and subscribed I love this stuff
How did you restart your fire after coming back to your campsite?
I had a couple of hot coals so I put some tinder on them and blew it back into life.
Looks like a lot of fun, guess there are no chiggers and ticks.
We get ticks here but no chiggers. So far I haven’t seen any, last year I only had four or five on me and probably 100 on each dog for the year. Still not too bad.
interesting modification to the diamond fly. i can see how that would work well as long as the wind isn't blowing directly into the open front of the tent. in my experience the advantage of wool over cotton or synthetics has mostly to do with the moisture the body produces while being active in the cold. it insulates and reduces that chilled clammy feeling on the skin that makes ya shiver and shake. as far as direct immersion into cold water, it'll keep ya alive longer than cotton but probably not comfortable. i enjoyed the video.
Thanks man, good points. Where I am the wind mostly comes from an expected direction. Cause yeah, otherwise it’s a balloon.
Good point about the wool in cold weather conditions.
Enjoyed your video.
Nice vid! Looking forward to more. Interested in learning more about tent set up, cooking, etc.
I appreciate hearing that! I had a lot more footage about the tent but I cut it. I’ll talk about it in another video. I’ll do more cooking demos too.
kinda weird question but were did you find your boots? I’ve been looking for a pair like them for a while
I got them from C&C Sutlery. They aren’t the greatest quality but they’ve been good for me since I’m mostly riding when I wear them. They’re also not completely correct for the era but for the price they’ve been great. If you want some high quality and 100% historically correct they’re about $400 and I can get the companies name for you.
This is gonna sound crazy but I wish I was born in the olden days. Back before internet or social media. Anywhere from the mid 18 hundreds to the 1970s.
Yeah that’s not so crazy.
Always amazed me how well goats and horses get along together
Pretty cool , thanks for posting
Thank you
So for those of you who were as confused as I was regarding his mention of the wool match test:
Light a thread of the fabric on fire with a match. If it briefly burns with a yellowish white flame and smells like burnt hair, then it's wool. Leaves an easily pulverized charcoal-like ash residue.
Good clarification, thank you!
If I were younger, I would move into a ghost town and hope others would follow.
hey buddy....just subbed ya !
This is the first film of yours for me to see ...... LIOVE it !!! Music is good , maybe add some fiddles as well - From Canada
Haha! Yes some fiddle would be great!
I plan on doing a very similar thing my friend!
Historical camping?
@@OverOnTheWildSide Well i want quality items so my gear will be old-style. Theres another plus by not supporting the petroleum industry by buying all that weak synthetic stuff. Gonna try and make my own oil-skin-ish/waxed canvas and hit the appalachian trail on foot, acquiring food along the way rather than bring it, as a test run. Gotta come back to my grandmothers next spring to get the garden right. Full on hunter/gather nomad eventually. Everything i own carried on my back. Ive come up with some workarounds in order to make it work for me and not bother anyone else. Full
freedom.
@@ericmartine902 I love it, I’m working on my daily life in that way- I want all natural and hand made items only. I’ll probably still have a truck and a chainsaw but maybe not. I’ll see how far I can go.

8:10 I propose you name that spot "WOOHOO CREEK"
In honor of that woolen, burlesque review.
Haha! That’s a good idea

Subbed from “ born 100 years to late” good content man
Awesome! Thank you
Really love these videos! How much would you say the dogs keep you warm? Would you change much about your shelter if you didn't have them along? Also, where do you go for your research info? I didn't even think about green unground beans pre-Arbuckles! All the little details are great. Thanks for the awesome content!
The dogs aren’t doing much for warmth right now. I’d like to get them used to sleeping right with me because I think it’d be a huge help. Then I’d probably do a design that I could close up completely.
I appreciate the feedback, thanks!
I mostly get my information from some really good Facebook groups and books. My favorites are the firsthand accounts written by frontiersmen.
Great video, thanks 👍
Outstanding!
I never seen Matt Dillon or John Wayne camp like this 🤣🤣🤣

I wish you the best, it’ll be an adventure you won’t regret.
Good stuff. Living life your way.
Sure do enjoy your videos. Not just because I like primitive camping myself but I like the cowboy persona you portray. What's best tho is watching the dogs, horses and goats follow you around.
Quite a little band you have there. Nice calming videos and I can't wait for the 4" of snow we have to go so I can get out again.
You really are living a great life. That river bit had me cracking up 😂.
Haha thanks!
Love the video. Quick question where did you get your boots .
I got them from C&C Sutler online. I have since learned they aren’t the most historic but they’re certainly way better than modern boots and the price difference is very significant. I think these are still around $150. Vs $500 for the correct kind.
Awesome show. New subscriber, sharing on fb and linkdin. Great content and delivery!
Thank you, I really appreciate that! I’ll get back to making videos soon.
Thanks for sharing. Modern society thinks glamping in a 40' diesel pusher rv is "roughin it"...lol.

Hello Marius

Awesome! Thanks! I have a new one going live in the morning.
Just found you and subscribed. My grand parents lived in the west, and that's all I think about. I hope to return out there again, and get back to what I like to do again. Hunt, fish, prospecting, and roam around.
I hope you get back to it, my big regret is not doing it years earlier. Especially if you like prospecting! I hear it’s realistic to make a living off of that. (Assuming you’re living inexpensive you)

Baking soda
Potatoe starch to stick it all together
