  • Saturday at the Red Bull Ring was characterised first by the F1 Sprint race and then by qualifying for Sunday's Austrian GP. And it was Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen who dominated both. After an early-lap skirmish with McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris, Max comfortably won the sprint; and he was in a class of his own in qualifying, securing the pole by relatively large margin of 0.404sec. In this video Peter Windsor details the section of road on the short Red Bull lap that best showcased the talent of Verstappen - and compares the speeds there of Max's closest rivals. He also looks at qualifying as a whole and at the key elements of the sprint race.

Great analysis, Peter. I think Max's ability to extract every bit out of this car, when others are getting closer, says so much about his mental toughness and maturity. I have been watching Formula One since 1968, and he is already up with the all-time greats IMO. Let's hope he sticks around for another 5-8 more years...

Hey racing stewards! Show us the bloody photo evidence of Oscar exceeding track limits. How can you make such a crucial decision without backing it up with actual evidence. It looked to me that he did not exceed track limits as not all four tyres were fully over the white line at the same time. If they were... PROVE IT to the fans.
And then you go and reject the protest because it was not addressed to the correct official and did not mention the exact rule ie Article 13.4.1 ISC. What a bloody JOKE! And Oscar is right. Why have the gravel if you can still exceed track limits without touching the gravel? The distance from the white line to the gravel should be the max width of an F1 car. Just another typical F1 case of the faceless and overly pedantic and officious pen pushers with too much power. It reminds me of the Las Vegas fiasco when Carlos had his car and race ruined by a pit cover because F1 could not prepare the bloody track properly.

Exactly the question I wanted to ask mr. Windsor. Isn’t going through gravel enough of a disadvantage, losing grip & getting dirt on the tyres? Shouldn’t it be éíther gravel ór track limits, instead of both?
I was very disappointed, but I’m convinced Oscar will be multi WDC eventually anyway😉 At least, after Max retires🤣

@@Grammarlings-cf8ywdude, max was WAY more impressive than Lewis in 21. I’m not a Lewis hater at all, but no objective fan could watch that year and say that overall (despite the AD debacle) Max didn’t deserve that championship. I know generally speaking “luck” evens itself out but in that year Lewis got lucky on so many occasions, and max was unlucky. Go back and watch Imola, Baku, Silverstone & Hungary for example, there are others but those 4 are the big ones. Max made virtually no mistakes that year except for SA.
Imola - Lewis crashes out, red flag appears and he can unlap himself, finishes 2nd.
Baku - Max tyre blow out while comfortably leading
Silverstone - I don’t even need to mention what happened there.
Hungary - Bottas decided to play ten pin bowling with the red bull cars.

@@AugustusCaesar88 No. Max doesnt deserve 2021 and Lewis is the unofficial 8-time World Champion. Lewis had no business winning the title with 5-laps to go. Max took Lewis out at Italian GP. Lewis won last 4x GP's on demand including Abu Dhabi until Michael Massi gifted the title to Max. Max's only defense was driving into Lewis on multiple occasions including Silverstone. Max banging wheels down to Brooklands is cute, but neither he or his feminine fanboys can hack Copse. If you turn in on guy on inside then you live with consequences. Max expecting everybody to back off every time is dumb. At some point someone will push back, and Lewis did just that. Lewis overtook Norris and Leclerc into Copse on the same afternoon: thats just a man handling his business instead of crying a river, like you.
What has Max done other than win 2x chips in the most dominant F1 car ever created and beating Perez?
Lewis has beaten World Champs in identical cars: Alonso will drive until hes 99yrs old because Rookie Lewis showed him what real pace looks like. Rosberg. Button.
Lewis has 7x chips and 1x stolen championship. Max will never be as legit as Lewis. Max is the most privileged F1 driver ever: imagine being gifted a title? We dont have to: Max was gifted a title by Massi in 2021.
You can fabricate fantasies all you want, but facts dont care about your feelings. There's video evidence of the entire 2021 season ffs.

Evidently, McLaren and Mercedes have come closer, but today's qually showed that it isn't over until it's over. So, I look forward to seeing the race tomorrow and the next 3 others, to see if Red Bull really found something to get ahead.
Perez, however, needs to seriously step up. While Perez is fighting with Alpine and Aston Martin, Max is trying to stay ahead of Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferarri. While Max won the Spring, McLaren gained the most points. It's unacceptable to see Perez perform like this.

Good analysis. @peter, Would have liked to hear your opinion on the deletion of Oscar’s second lap in Q3. The gravel is there to penalise going off track. So what’s the point of having that gravel if you can still go off without touching it? I feel for Oscar in this situation. My take is the gravel trap should have been closer to the track by the minuscule distance Oscar was supposedly off.. this particular lap deletion isn’t good for anybody, including the FIA. Hope Oscar can get on to the podium today💪🏽

A popular dispute against Max’s greatness I’ve been seeing recently is “so you’re saying he’d win in a Williams” nobody in the history of ever is winning in this Williams so that’s moot. He’d be winning in Ferrari and Mercedes the last couple weekends, let alone the McLaren. Max gives you 2 tenths minimum over any driver no matter the car, per everyone in the pit lane. Last couple years he had it easy because RB was the only team to produce a viable car, hence 30+ sec victories and checo in 2nd. This year? Checo full on ghost job, nowhere to be seen, and Max alone at the front fending off quicker cars. Max is the difference every time. Take every driver to ever drive any automobile, and stick them in the RB and I bet Max beats them all. He’s in his prime, the regulations are about to be maxed out, the cars are closer than ever and over the course of this year and next, he answers all the questions, removes any doubt, and will have dominated the horrible British media into submission. The greatest yet most under-appreciated champion thanks to the media infrastructure. The reason his RB is so fast is because max is the only one who can handle that aggressive of a car/setup. At the end of the day his skill is the reason he’s winning. All the drivers are intimidated by him on the track, they know their only shot is to not be faster that him but to disrupt him like lando tried by pushing him off track. On the track He’s a machine, methodical, cold, and as close to perfect as you can be, there are countless examples. The Dutch national anthem, and the number one on Maxs car each year, just about the only things predictable in formula1 these days

What been done is create a gravel trap big enough to cause singe seaters to wheel spin or under-rotate wide if they’re off track, but small enough to cover-over with kerbing for the bikes. The *quid pro quo* is the single seaters are have another half metre of track to play with which is really hidden (black painted) kerb & brick track edge. It feels just the same from the driver’s seat, but looks very different from the cameras so the 1,000s of off tracks generated by F1 in 2023, should become a few dozen literal black & white decisions that can mostly be automatically dealt with. Great compromise with the reality of racing around that part of the track and clever use of AI technology with basic paint and metal work.

I feel that max has become the most precise driver in F1 at the moment but to infer what he's doing in T7-T8 without telemetry data is just speculative at best. max still has the best car in it's sweet spot today. When he didn't have a car that he liked he couldn't consistently pull out this type of performance. I still believe that he is the best right now. Lewis either has lost a step or something is wrong with his car, but incredible to still perform at this level after 17 years in F1. George, I'll say it again, is the fastest or top 2 fastest in F1. Oscar deserves a reversal of his demotion

I think McLaren are a little bit harder on their tires, aren't they quick in their preparation but pay a price later? If something causes early pitting they could benefit. Is Ferrari in a stall or slipping? Wasn't there a nightmare here with times deleted for driving out of bounds. I understand the drivers welcomed the gravel because they couldn't stay on track on their own, is that some kind of avoiding responsibility? Great show.

A bit silly this, there is not a lot to be won in a fast corner since you spend less time in a fast corner. It might be interesting to compare the speeds in that corner but on the delta the gain Verstappen had to Norris is only around 0.07s. It is actually the last two corners where Verstappen gained 0.17s on Norris. The other main one is corner 3 where Verstappen wins 0.1 on Norris, but that's the slowest corner on the track followed by a straight, so it's not that big of a difference.

Perez is missing in many of the "the Red Bull is really good in this..." analyses. No top speed. No analysis on that left-right switch. It would give that bit of background if it is the car or the driver. The other option is that perez is just that much slower making him not be on those lists: then you have the answer I guess
