although i was never a big fan of the 3d models, i've definitely learned to appreciate the ambition. also i think the fact that game freak was committed to giving the 3d models more personality through the walking animations in gen 7 is very respectable and i wouldn't be surprised if it came down to issues with implementation on the hardware.
I'm always going to be a big fan of the Gen 2 overworld/menu sprites, because I think that the abstraction is what makes them so charming to me, but Gen IV and V are very close in second place. If this was about menu sprites, I'd have to say Gen VII is my favorite, because it combines the cute chibi approach from Gen III onward but with more detail.
"otherworldly" is a great word to use for old overworld sprites. The overworld and the "battle screens" did feel like 2 different worlds due to the different in graphics and details, and always encouraged my imagination to think what these worlds would look like IRL or in 3D. The new games take away that a lot of that imagination, since everything is 3D and the overworld and battles are in the same world. I think not needing this imagination anymore is partly why Pokemon games don't hit the same in the 3D era
Ekans moves while coiled up... that should be enough to tell you how little they cooked. Let's Go had an ekans slithering animation used when following, just copy that over. Better than the snake equivalent of sliding in a standing pose.
It was seeing overworld sprites in early romhack machinimas that made me want to become game dev in the first place. 21 years later...I'm still not a game dev, but at least I have the experience with hobby projects 😅
I promise you, the 3DS games chug less because the 3DS is underpowered (even though it is) and more because Gamefreak is incompetent. Starting from the fact that they made future-proofed models with irresponsibly high poly counts for the 3DS, only to pretend to discard them in SwSh (they didn't), they also make a ton of questionable choices when it comes to, well, making the game. There's this infamous example that everyone likes to quote about how there's like 10 copies of Lillie's model under some maps loaded at all times for different story purposes lol. I don't doubt a more talented team, or at least one whose upper managment wasn't encroaching on them to release a yearly game with a relatively small team for how much the franchise profits, could squeeze a lot more juice out of the 3DS
The YOOOOUUUUU edit was genius, I literally bursted out laughing out loud whilst cleaning my table xD
Xurkitree prancing is so adorable, it gives way more character to this mess of wires.

I love and appreciate you, keep making these videos man
as long as pokemon exists, im not going anywhere😎
And then we have BDSP's which are just plain otherworldly and uncanny.
BDSP is just lame in general :/
Honestly I think we would have been happy if they just copied platinum into 3d and didn't even change anything, compared to what we got.

could have used “the overworldly charm” in the title
