Kanye did this same type of shit with 808s, lotta people didn't like the autotune on it but looking back on it now people calling that shit classic. Same gonna happen for Yeezus after a couple years.
in my opinion, i don't think your familiar with this type of sound. if kanye had taken his time with this sound, then I would agree but his bars are simplistic, the beats are dismissive (with the exception of a few tracks) and it doesn't sound concise and cohesive to me. There really was no intent with this album TO ME. now if you want experimental music that is notable and worth listening to, i suggest el-p, death grips, Mr. Muthafuckin Exquire, and even the new Childish Gambino album.
what i meant by kanye doing the same thing with yeezus is releasing something that was completely different to what he did before. with 808s kanye never used autotune or drum machines and used soul samples instead and with yeezus this was completely different from mbdtf. really bound 2 was the only thing closest to pre-yeezus 'ye. this was really the first album i listened to that was of this style and for many others it is too. the average kanye fan won't know who those guys you mentioned are except gambino but his album was really different from yeezus and i listened to no love by death grips and gambino is different from them too. from what i saw many people's criticism of yeezus was the production and that's really because average hip hop fans (like me) aren't used to this kind of production but it grew on me
DJBIGGIG Man i'm getting a feeling that you genuinely like it and that's ok. like whatever you want to like. my problem comes into play whenever people are saying that this man is doing something revolutionary and that it's never been done. my point is that it has been done and done better but people are not looking hard enough for this style of music. i commend you for giving death grips a listen because some Kanye fans wouldn't give it a chance but that's my point exactly. the only thing i'll commend kanye for on this album is that he is the first mainstream artist to experiment with this sound and i have no problem with that. i just hope that he does a more cohesive job with his next project and emphasizes more on bringing the lyrical aspect of his music back because no matter what sound you go with, your lyrics have to be on par and Kanye downgraded with Yeezus in terms of lyrics to me.

I don't see why everyone hates this album.. It's 2015 and i'm still bumping this & MBDTF. Seems like nobody likes new kinds of Hip Hop that's actually original.
Because it isn't all that original. I also like the album but to think for a second he isn't trying to get on the industrial type music that artists such as Death Grips have been doing for years now is wrong. He is the first mainstream rapper to do this, no where near the first artist though. Also the lyrics are mainly pretty fucking horrible. Way too many types he just repeats the last word, that IN DA CLUB shit wasn't amazing, half the lines were corny, or just plain boring. New Slaves is the exception.
***** It definitely had a couple tracks I didn't like, but in a whole I liked it.. Lyrics were mediocre, but the production definitely makes up for it.
Didn't realize it at first but album yeezus is quite brilliant actually... this is a fair first reaction but there is a cohesive underlying story arc that went over alot of people's heads. Keep in mind that Kanye not only does what he feels when he makes an album but he also plays off society's perception of him. It's a combination. He wholeheartedly wanted to make the album 808's & heartbreak as an artist but it also gave him an excuse to make it in light of the passing of his mother and the break up of his relationship with Alexis who was his fiance at the time. So I'm sure the feelings were very much real, but at the same time he played off the public perception of the state of emotions that people would imagine he was in. When he made MBDTF it was the first time you witnessed him embracing "asswhole" type of lyrics in a more direct way. It allowed him to play off the perception of his Taylor Swift moment the year before when the whole world hated him. Yeezus is a character that he played to go with the theme of the project and the time period of his life and aspirations. He played a character. I understood this more when I went to the Yeezus tour and was blown away by how it came off almost like a broadway play on a Walt Disney stage, which was a mountain by the way lol. But anyways he wore a mask, which he takes off when Jesus walks to the stage, at that moment is when Kanye takes off his mask as if to symbolize his enlightenment. The rest of the show proved that because after that point he ended the show with his more happier songs. Now let's get back to the cohesiveness of the story in the album... Kanye had a theme of minimalism for the album yeezus. So while at surface value the lyrics definitely come off as maybe some of Kanye's most simplistic rhymes ever, the genius lies in the underlying messaging of the story that I found very entertaining. The entire album is infact an allegory depicting the tragic fall of the "Yeezus" persona, going from the strong hard hitting angry, obnoxious, egotistical tracks On sight, Blackskinhead, I am a God, New Slaves. Then, it shows the inevitable tragic fall, like something straight from Aristotle himself: Hold my liquor and I'm in it deal with Alcohol and Sex addiction in a way that shouts the typical glorification of the Rockstar lifestyle, whilst robbing it of its glory. "Had to stop at 7/11 like I needed gas/i'm lying i needed condoms don't look through the glass/chasing love and all the bittersweet hours lost/eating Asian pussy all I need was sweet and sour sauce". The distorted sound of the tracks and the uneasy schizophrenic sampling show the deterioration of the Yeezus persona as he "gets in too deep", The distortion of his voice throughout the song makes the listener realize the horror of what it is to embrace these aspects of life. Blood on the leaves is the climax of the album. Returning to the robot voice, to express the detached state that his sinful ways have led him to. This song is the Anagnorisis(similar to when Oedipus realizes that he's married his mother in the Greek tragedy). Yeezus has fallen low since he declared himself a god. Now you sitting court side/wifey on the other side/gotta keep em' separated i call that Apartheid/then she said she impregnated/that's the night ya heart died/now you gotta go and tell ya girl and report that/main reason cuz ya pastor said you can't abort that/now ya driver say that new benz you can't afford that/all that cocaine on the table you can't snort that/that goin' to that owin' money that the court got/all up in that alimony, uh, yeah - yeah she got you homie/'till death but do you your part, unholy matrimony." Guilt trip is a continuation of Yeezus' road to redemption, his catharsis(continuation of robot voice). It's Yeezus attempts to overcome his failed relationship and come to terms with his own fallibility. "Focus on the future and let the crew knock her" "if you love me so much then why you let me go?" (x3) Then, we get to the final stage with the last two songs: Send it up and Bound 2. Send it up is Yeezus coming to terms with what has happened and joyfully choosing to put it all behind him. "Reliving the past? your loss" is the beginning of the song, and it ends with Beanie Mann singing "Memories don't live like people do; they always 'member you/whether things are good or bad/it's just the memories that you had". At the end of Kanye's verse, he shows that the Yeezus persona has revived anew "Yeezus just rose again". Bound 2 is the happy ending of Yeezus. Yeezus, after that all he's endured: the greatness, the loss, the suffering, and the revival; he is now redeemed. He is no longer chasing the fame, the money, the superficial things, and he's found that "one good girl [who] is worth a thousand bitches" meaning that he has found a legitimate relationship with a woman, as opposed to all the bitchy girls that he's been dealing with. This girl gives him everything that Yeezus could ever ask for: companionship. The final lines of the song reflect their relationship. "It's not perfect but you know, ain't nobody perfect". They celebrate the small milestones of making it to thanksgiving and to Christmas; perhaps they can make it all the way to the altar, but first she's going to need to forget and forgive the person that Yeezus was. On the last two lines, Yeezus sums up the entire journey, on a number of levels: after this long-ass journey and transition that Yeezus has gone through, reflecting the verses of these raps and self reflection; or the verses of him against his demons; or the verses of the bible as they get married they're both tired; and sad for the way things are for people still living their life in despair; and in a metaphor and reference to the shortest "verse" in the Bible, they weep, just as "Jesus Wept." "Maybe, we can still make it to the church steps/but first, you gon' remember how to forget/after, all of these long-ass verses/i'm tired, you tired, Jesus wept." I wrote this long-ass comment in hopes that some of you may revisit the album yeezus, and play it straight through from track one with a open mind now knowing this information. It really is light years ahead of anything he's done thus far, even though personally late registration and 808's are my two top favorite Kanye albums, I understand the brilliance of Yeezus. Just remember to not take everything so serious because if it's one thing I love about Ye it's his ability to poke fun at himself in his music. He really hasn't changed, only progressed. In alot of ways "New Slaves" is a 2013 version of "All Falls Down." Same subject matter. And i never understood the fuss about him being hypocritical when this is not a new Kanye, he was hypocritical on his very first album. Acknowledging being hypocritical is one quality of being a conscious artist. You're human, humans are hypocritical. People forget that celebrities are human too and do the same shit we do only difference is that they're famous so they are judged more harshly. It's almost like you're a joke once you're a famous artist you lose the right to have an opinion... 2Pac was misunderstood by many to being hypocritical in a lot of ways, When you hear Kendrick Lamar say "I'm the biggest hypocrite of 2015" he's talking about himself aswell, not just to others. Kanye has always conveyed musically to me "hey guys, I'm one of you" He was always addicted to clothes... "things we buy to cover up what's inside".. Keyword "WE". Kanye has always been this type of social rapper. True concious artists relate to the people, and in my opinion Kanye has done that well for atleast a decade.

Except no. It was a horrible album. There were great parts to it, but to get to those parts you had to suffer through an ocean of shit. The pacing sucks. the lyrics suck.
archologyzero It wasn't about lyrics, it was about raw emotion. If you didn't pick up on it, it doesn't mean you're wrong but it does mean I feel sorry for you - you're missing out. If you're gonna attempt to prove me wrong, please make an argument better than "DUR HURR FIST IN HER LIKE A CIVIL RIGHTS SIGN DUR HURR"
Eamonn Lahey RAW EMOTION? WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? this album is SHIT on all levels. shit, it's even on shit level shit. i wont give you any argument, i will give you advice to improve your music taste or you will be defending shit shit lvl of shit music your whole life. you know what raw emotion in music is? when pianist, doublebassist and drummer sit down and play some jam. now, that's some qulity RAW emotion that you talkin about. DUR HURR
this isnt a new sound. The Album is a pop version of Death Grips and theyve been doing it since 2011. and Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson have been around for how long? Noise Hop, and Industrial music isnt new. But i enjoy the album.
Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that he's absolutely jamming like crazy on the first listen before saying he doesn't like it afterwards? It's like someone was holding a gun to his head.
"New Slaves", one of my favorite songs, actually says a lot about today's society. Don't just listen to a track, try to understand it. Don't be a puppet on the string. You weren't put in this world to imitate. Create your own, be your own. People need to open their eyes and see the real shit that's been going on. Don't be fooled my friends! Always question, argue and discuss... don't take shit from anybody.
It does. Kanye continues that topic in interviews calling it Classism. Though it has to be said rappers have mentioned it before Kanye, but obviously Kanye has a lot of celebrity power, No rich ($200M+ net worth) celebrities speak out on it so his message will be looked a lot more from New Slaves which is highly necessary.
YourRoad2Awe Illuminati is just something to make the mass go blind on other stuff. Don't you realize how obsessed some people with the whole Illuminati thing are? But the real problems are what makes us, the people, suffer. How about the Ebola epidemic? You think it just occured? Out of the blue? Man-made, brother. And it didnt kill the rich, but the poor. And it made America send troops on African ground, where there weren't any. Think about that.
Wow it aged so well, feels like the album just came out. Noone was ready for it in 2013. Just like the lyrics said, "he will give us what we need, it might not be what we want", from on sight.
i think the era of innovation and albums like yeezus, mbdtf, graduation is over. its sad but i am happy that ye is finally happy. his golden years are over but he definitely gave us a really fucking good run.
overrated*.Yes it has mixed reactions from his fans but it has an extremely high score of 88 on metacritic and many of his fans claim how if you didn't like this album then you don't Understand or appreciate art and some go as far as calling it album of the decade or even century. No the album wasn't bad, but it does not deserve all that acclaim at all it was just solid, but lazy and one of Kanye's weakest
Shain Issa the album lyrically is perhaps Kanye's worst and production wise it was lazy and could have been better, definitely not a highlight in his discography

Now you sitting court side/wifey on the other side/gotta keep em' separated i call that Apartheid/then she said she impregnated/that's the night ya heart died/now you gotta go and tell ya girl and report that/main reason cuz ya pastor said you can't abort that/now ya driver say that new benz you can't afford that/all that cocaine on the table you can't snort that/that goin' to that owin' money that the court got/all up in that alimony, uh, yeah - yeah she got you homie/'till death but do you your part, unholy matrimony."
Guilt trip is a continuation of Yeezus' road to redemption, his catharsis(continuation of robot voice). It's Yeezus attempts to overcome his failed relationship and come to terms with his own fallibility.
"Focus on the future and let the crew knock her" "if you love me so much then why you let me go?" (x3)
Then, we get to the final stage with the last two songs: Send it up and Bound 2. On the last two lines, Yeezus sums up the entire journey, on a number of levels: after this long-ass journey and transition that Yeezus has gone through, reflecting the verses of these raps and self reflection; or the verses of him against his demons; or the verses of the bible as they get married they're both tired; and sad for the way things are for people still living their life in despair; and in a metaphor and reference to the shortest "verse" in the Bible, they weep, just as "Jesus Wept."
"Maybe, we can still make it to the church steps/but first, you gon' remember how to forget/after, all of these long-ass verses/i'm tired, you tired, Jesus wept."
I wrote this long-ass comment in hopes that some of you may revisit the album yeezus, and play it straight through from track one with a open mind now knowing this information.
+Adversary lol I feel you
+Adversary Sounds like a bunch of bullshit to me. Shit was bad to me...
+BrothaGoneBased cool, really compelling comment you made. I honestly have no comeback for your super insightful opinion.
+Rich E. Rich There shouldn't be a comeback... Sounds like bullshit. Loved Every single album. Till yeezus. Read through all the shit you said and it just sounds like excuses for mediocrity. Idk, shit was asss for lack of a better word
+BrothaGoneBased again you are really wowing me with your ability to break shit down, yes just completely dismiss all my points, no problem. Keep it moving then.

Yeezus is possibly the worst rap album of all time no joke
I Fucking Love Hold My Liquor
Agreed, Kanye's verse is straight fire, lyrically it is very emotional and the flow fits perfectly to the song. Easily my favourite track on Yeezus.
+Eric Legend same and I love the way he just gives one verse and just lets justin vernon and the instrumental to the song just continue to bless the song
A fuckin master piece my favorite song from the album
Yesss
Coming back here in 2023 and I can say with absolute certainty that Yeezus is definitely a masterpiece and one of the best albums of all time. stopping to think it's a 2013 record ???? certainly a work of art that has aged and will continue to age like wine !!!
W comment
Yeezus is a 10/10. Fact.

I want Anthony Fantano to do a review like this.
Lol that would be funny
Imasoleman23 You don't know Fantano.
#TaskForce
his taste in hip hop is too broad
121Jmp Why? Because he gives an opinion that is not like yours?
I think that if i don´t like it I´m in my right to say it

Bob Thes yeah the reason I personally love it is because I like multiple genres of music and seeing him bring multiple genres together was really interesting to me.
"I am perplexed" 😂😂😂😂😂💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 lmaoo

Trust me! It grows on you! I had to listen to it 3 times! One of my favorite Kanye Album!

I can't tell if in his reaction he hates Bound 2 or is blown away by it. What does that facepalm mean!!
this was not a kanye west album this was a yeezus album meaning kanye expirementing how ppl would react to a new sound and it was a good album
Except no. It was a horrible album. There were great parts to it, but to get to those parts you had to suffer through an ocean of shit. The pacing sucks. the lyrics suck.
Except that the sound has been done before.....by smaller alt hip-hop groups.
archologyzero It wasn't about lyrics, it was about raw emotion.
He's so positive it's so great
Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that he's absolutely jamming like crazy on the first listen before saying he doesn't like it afterwards?
She's the tellin the truth
You're talking about a man who is the illuminati's bitch.
Yeezus REALLY grew on me since it came out... Like I love YEEZUS now & in 2013 it was whatever to me.
YourRoad2Awe
Illuminati is just something to make the mass go blind on other stuff.
'The fucking speakers broken?'
It took me over a month of listening to Yeezus almost every day to start loving every song.
Guilt Trip ft Kid Cudi was probably the best song on the ablum
Do you still think so
The fact that I was sipping my water when he said "Chug that shit" and we made eye contact kind of scared me... lol
His reaction to I’m in it was 100% me. I was so confused but not in a bad way but it definitely grew on me

Wow it aged so well, feels like the album just came out. Noone was ready for it in 2013. Just like the lyrics said, "he will give us what we need, it might not be what we want", from on sight.
Seeing someone's reaction to "On Sight" for the first time is just hilarious LOL
I've literally come back to this 10 times to watch your reaction to the Blood on the Leaves beat drop
Everything I listen to YEEZUS this video came up go my mind 🔒 Thank you for this man been a follower since back then 🔒
Dawg mad props for being the only person i could find that posted a reaction to yeezus when it originally dropped, 2013 was a different time.
0:01 DAMN! I guess that means Floyd Mayweather can't watch this video.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH! a masterpiece... 10/10
His reaction to On Sight will always be hilarious lmao
Guilt trip has that 808s feel
He made this album for the future, 10 years later people think its kanyes best album and one of the best albums of the 2010s
I'm back at this video trying to imagine if JIK could possibly get better over time like Yeezus did, but I'm not seeing it.
Word word
i think the era of innovation and albums like yeezus, mbdtf, graduation is over. its sad but i am happy that ye is finally happy. his golden years are over but he definitely gave us a really fucking good run.
Jesus is king has been amazing since it dropped though idk why it gets so much hate
Jik isn’t on yeezus level but it’s definitely not a terrible album. But when you’re focusing on religion not everyone is gonna fuck with it
Blood On The Leaves Kills this whole album, get's me hyped every time i listen...
this album is so underrated
overrated*.Yes it has mixed reactions from his fans but it has an extremely high score of 88 on metacritic and many of his fans claim how if you didn't like this album then you don't Understand or appreciate art and some go as far as calling it album of the decade or even century. No the album wasn't bad, but it does not deserve all that acclaim at all it was just solid, but lazy and one of Kanye's weakest
+marco bazan solid but lazy? dude, next time you decide to comment please make sense
Shain Issa the album lyrically is perhaps Kanye's worst and production wise it was lazy and could have been better, definitely not a highlight in his discography
this album has aged the best of all kanye albums imo. at least on reception from release to now. even more than 808's
You're easily one of my top 10-15 Rap album review and food consumption youtubers.
send it up and im in it was dooope you tripping quint
Loved this album when it was new. Still love it now. It’s aged beautifully.
Ye always ahead of its time
honestly its hard to believe he made all that in 2013 he really is ahead of his time with those amazing beats
Guilt Trip is one of my favourite Kanye tracks of all time...that shits banging and the sample is just great.
F. Lashby travis put those amazing drums on there
Larren Green I don't even talk about the drums. The sample from Pusha's track, the Arp sound from Sonic haha. Kudi's verse too.
He was dancing to Black Skinhead just like in the music video. This man really had it figured out back then, it took me a year to appreciate this back then
2020 and people are finally catching up! i’m glad!
7 years later, this album aged like a fine wine
By far your best review hands down big homie. That instant riot shit had me dying lol, keep pumping out the good content man. Much love.

So glad this was suggested to me almost 9 years later this is awesome
crazy how this album can be considered the father of today's music, we wouldn't have whole lotta red and utopia without this
