Hey great to see someone else with an older 6S truck in 2021. I haven't had mine long but it's an old truck, I put in a max6 but I've been running 6S and killed front and rear diffs. Hopefully the newer 8S ring and pinion makes a difference but I think I'll have to do the centre diff. It currently has a slipper eliminator which won't be helping. Have you done anything else to run 8S? Cheers!
Yes everything has been swapped over basically. I might have one or two of the 6S dog bones and drive cups on it still. Yeah the 8s heavy duty diff gears are much better than the 6S ones but I was still stripping them especially when I was doing any type of jumping. I haven’t had any issues since putting the center diff in. Well worth the money 💰
Great vid, but anyone doing this that finds a bad bearing and damaged feet on the diff (or anywhere else) try to be patient and snag some new parts to replace the damaged stuff. I know it sucks, but ripping the truck down again sucks more. I’m in the same boat right now. I was given a 6S X and found the same problem. I am on hold until my new diff and bearings arrive. Thank god I have an 8SX I can bash while I wait.
Awesome video. Changed out mine but it is not gripping with the pinion gear. Would the pinion gear need to be changed to a different ‘teeth’ amount possibly?
Esc would be the biggest tell…otherwise you can take the spur gear cover off and see if it has a Cush Drive or the 6s Slipper Clutch…also 6s didn’t originally come with a wheelie bar
hello , question i have an issue when i put pressure on the xmaxx or lets say i block it for the tires to just spin on the ground sometimes the rear tires don’t turn , is that a commun issue ? and need the diff to lock ?
@@RCKnockout no what i do is that when i put it on the ground i try to do a burnout and sometimes the front tires turn but not the rear ones , and i already replaced the diffs and doesn’t lock so i don’t know if thats normal
@@mariorojas758 the rear should still be trying to turn if both are fully in contact with the ground? I suppose the center diff could unload some of the power to the front
Good point……but if I can get another run or two out of it before if fails completely…..why not? Not to mention it’s not very difficult to get back into the diffs….that’s the way I look at it anyways
Thanks! The center diff makes a huge difference for bashing. I haven’t stripped a differential gear since swapping it over. Before that I was chipping teeth almost every run
@@ljhobbylife definitely a good idea. Max 6 might be a better setup to run though unless you’re running a serious setup. I have a Max 5 and Max 6s in my xmaxxs. The Max 6 will fit in the VXL8s location. The Max 5 won’t. You’ll need an aftermarket Mount. I have mine sitting on top of my receiver box on an aftermarket mount
@@RCKnockout Very helpful I have a 6s and want it to be 8s upgrades are crazy the only thing I have not done is the center diff probably going to run the stock 6s gear until it breaks which I'm hoping if I adjust the slipper right it might last for a good bash or two!!!! Diff a arms tires all 8s ready!!! We shall see...🤞
F the center diff id keep the gear it diffs out on 8s to much. I want wheelies give is good plastic will strip you can get a steel one. I dont like the diff all the power goes to the front to much ya i could thicken oil but idk. That solid locker spool is crap get that out there bad they are for very loose dirt only thats it. Me id do rear diff thick oil front diff thick oil center gear no diff. Then that dumb cush drive im putting the slipper back in cause 8s can be brutal and id rather have some give like a slipper will give. That cush drive has no give. The slipper just tighten it well it will work.
Yeah I just run the center diff in mine now…it works pretty well….having that locker spool just broke everything in my front and rear diffs….the center diff is much better suited for heavy bashing
I am building a Xmaxx and this video really helped me understand the center diff and whether or not I needed to install one.
Awesome video..
I’m glad you found it helpful…it’s definitely something worth spending the money on if you plan on doing any bashing
The area by the bearings is called the channels.
Thanks for the info 👍😉

Thanks! That’s very true…it’s been replaced since then though
What is the part number for the new bearings for the new bulkhead?
Not a clue….I typically buy a whole new Xmaxx 8s bearing kit and change them throughout
Awesome video. Changed out mine but it is not gripping with the pinion gear. Would the pinion gear need to be changed to a different ‘teeth’ amount possibly?
I’m not sure what you mean? What isn’t gripping the pinion gear?
How to know if xmaxx is 6S or 8S without disassembly?
Esc would be the biggest tell…otherwise you can take the spur gear cover off and see if it has a Cush Drive or the 6s Slipper Clutch…also 6s didn’t originally come with a wheelie bar
Locked center diff cost me hundreds in diff parts before i figured this out on my talion. Land with front or rear wheels off the ground and SNAP.
Yeah unfortunately locked diffs really aren’t good for bashing or jumping of any kind
@@RCKnockout I bash hard too, need all the toughness
Great presentation my friend 👊. Very helpful, especially being new to the platform. 🍻😎💪👊👊
No problem….glad you found it helpful! 👍😉
Can you tell me the part numbers for the things I’ll need to do my center diff
7727x is the rear bulkhead you’ll need. Not sure what the actual part number is for the center diff itself?
hello , question i have an issue when i put pressure on the xmaxx or lets say i block it for the tires to just spin on the ground sometimes the rear tires don’t turn , is that a commun issue ? and need the diff to lock ?

🙋♂️ do you think it’s okay not to add diff grease to the center diff? Will it cause more ware this way?
You definitely want diff fluid in the actual center diff……I wouldn’t worry about the outside gear though…..that’ll just attract dirt and dust
@@RCKnockout perfect. I added silicone ear plugs to the center diff but didn’t grease the outside of it. Appreciate your response.

Every time I do this, the center drive shaft moves back a forth, is that bad or is it ok, and when it rolls I hear like a Knocking sound
Yeah there’s usually some play…..knocking doesn’t sound normal though
@@RCKnockout ima send it away to some professionals and get it fix🥲 I won’t have my truck😖
@@2004DodgeRam whatever works best for you……personally I would learn how to fix it myself….since it’s definitely gonna break again in the future

I would have replaced anything that had chipped teeth. You had it all taken apart, may have just gone down and picked on up a new upgraded one

Cush drives where always intended to run with the center diff aside from on road (xo-1). They just don’t have enough give on their own for bashing.
Does the xo-1 have a center diff in it?
Yeah I’ve broken quite a bit on my Xmaxx so this seemed like a good upgrade
@@RCKnockout iirc the xo-1 is the only one that has a cush and no center diff.
@@dylanwhite6539 gotcha. I guess that makes sense since it’s an on-road rc and it’s not really made for bashing
