  • The Nissan 300ZX was among the elite Japanese luxury sports cars for sale in the US in the early 1990's, alongside the fourth-generation Toyota Supra and Mazda RX7. But they can be a pain to keep running in the long term, and so LoJ Innovations makes a kit to inexpensively swap a GM LS engine under the hood. So how does that make the car drive?

    Thats a tidy swap. I dont know why so many people are getting bitter about LS swaps - its literally saving these cars from being scrapped. New Zealand has a bunch of these cars and most of the twin turbo ones are for sale, very cheap with issues that obviously aren't worth fixing. Giving them a new lease on life with a shitload more power can only be a good thing!

      Theyre an absolute bitch to work on. Back then, the Nissan dealers didnt know how to work on them so the choice was too work on them yourself, or take them to a Z expert who was backed up for a month with work. I got the factory manual and worked on it a lot myself, swearing the entire time. I remember spending 3 hours getting a house clamp off because the factory had turned the screw for the clamp so it was behind the engine and not accessible.
      I'm glad they're putting LSs into these. Theyre still great looking and could've definitely used more power. After a few basic upgrades you needed to pull the motor to get to the next hp level and most guys weren't going to do that.

      They don’t cry cause it’s ls specifically they cry cause it’s not original engine, I agree with both sides of the argument. Sure you wanna keep it original but if you blow up the original engine it be stupid not to ls swap some cars it’s just much cheaper. Sure it ruins value but it’s having an engine is worth more then no engine

      If its still the Z32 trans, the car might have originally been NA. The Turbo trans won't fit with a bell housing adapter kit. I just cant believe someone would throw all that money on a build and then buy TSW wheels. Might as well have a cereal bowl for a wheel.

    Love Docs Z32, such a gorgeous build. BUT, for somebody who claims to have never even driven a 300zx you kinda talk smack about the vg30dett. Now VG's are in fact extremely stout, trustworthy and reliable. Thing is a bolt on TT on e85 would be pushing out about 100whp more and a decent amount of torque more than this LS. Please try a VG Z32, feels a lot like a mk4 Supra but with torque down low and less boost lag. The only time VG's become a pain in the ass is when they've been neglected in the past.
    This is still a great car owned by a great guy though!

      +Some Body i believe those motors weigh much more than a 455 Buick engine (7.4L)... on top of that, the car is built around the motor, so you don't have much work space in the engine bay since everything is crammed inside... it's a real pain to work on the motor, honestly

    • @vishS14
      @vishS14 8 лет назад +4

      +Paul Rodriguez absolutely right , i own one, and it's a nightmare to work on. But, if you do it right it, you won't need to do it over. If you take out the engine to put in a V8 , you might as well rebuild the VG and put it back in. A complete rebuild kit with forged internals will cost 2500 @ Z1. Maybe a 1000 for machine work. And if you need the extra power, 1800 for larger twin turbo's, 500 for fuel and finaly about 300 for Nistune ecu. 6200 total, a lot cheaper then what these guys are talking about, and will make between 5 and 600hp for a really long time. A V8 might be cheaper to buy , but then you have the headache of fabrication to fit it all. Don't get me wrong i love V8's , just not in Z's , RX's , Supra's. Would love to own a late 90's Camaro.

    • @xXxXcrosbykidXxXx
      @xXxXcrosbykidXxXx 8 лет назад

      They dont weigh more than a 455, not even close. They weigh about the same as fully dressed rb26's and 2jz's. And thats only because they're iron blocks with forged heavy internals built to handle boost.

But instead it increased by 12.5% so obviously inflation has very little to do with it. Not to mention I put more kms on it, It got one year older, and I added no parts to it except for oil change/ maintenance etc

      eh, rebuild it when it blows up

    • @DavidMedlin
      @DavidMedlin 9 лет назад +5

      +Jake Stumbaugh It wasn't grinding due to the power. It was grinding because these transmissions have a known synchro issue, although that's usually second gear. There are a few things that could be done to reduce or almost eliminate the grinding if it's not too bad but they do handle quite a bit of power. When I do my swap I will likely go with the t56 to get a 6th gear even though there is some massaging that needs to be done on the transmission tunnel to make it fit correctly. It also saves almost a grand off the conversion kit.

      Think the funniest part is they kept the only part of the Z32 that all Z owners try and get rid of for something better. Guys with Stock block, turbos, manifolds, intercooler piping, rear diff, etc are making 480+whp/500+wtq. Transmission is always first thing we have issues with. He wasted all that money. Could have made that power on with injectors, dual intake, exhaust, clutch on everything else stock.

  • @forszhen7
    @forszhen7 8 лет назад +6

    It's funny he said you can't rebuild a vg30dett for under $10,000 then started naming parts that added up to the price of the ls swap. $3,000 for turbos, eagle rods and wiseco pistons $1,000, and cams (which most z owners don't even bother with) $1,000. This wasn't low balling at all either. You can easily find a quality turbo kit for less than three grand. You can put together a reliable 700+ hp build for about 8 grand give or take.

      +sahiel5 it's sacrilege that some people can be so blind and bias. Swapping faster motors into a car has been being done for almost a century now. It's called hotroding. Some of the greatest cars in history have come from simply swapping the engine. Just one for example is the shelby cobra. Dont be a blind loyalist to one type of car. it just makes you ignorant. I drive a muscle car, but as soon as the BRZs get down to near the $12K mark Hopefully i will be able to pick one up. And best know im going to be looking to do a v8 swap into it. That car to me would be the perfect sports car if it had a v8.

      I mean I know it is technically 1080p, there are 1080 vertical lines but it's so blocky it doesn't look like 1080p on other channels - maybe it's the youtube compression, especially considering the whole frame is constantly changing (this requires very high bitrate)

Everything I've read says the LS mates to the stock Nissan trans perfectly (w/adaptor, like stated), and handles the load. Boring only because every other engine platform has become insanely expensive yet also less reliable and efficient. In other words, the LS has grown to dominate everything else on the market. Pretty sad when a 16-valve pushrod V8 delivers better fuel efficiency, reliability, durability, affordability, and max output power output than those "highly advanced and precision engineered" JDM engines. Yeah, really boring.... for the JDM shops that don't know how to build an LS.

In a sense your seeing an evolution of the hot rodding tradition... at one point people mixed and matched parts for 20s and 30s coupes in the 50s and 60s... now their doing it with Japanese cars from the 90s in the 2010s... get over it.

    • @jeadelmann90
      @jeadelmann90 9 лет назад +2

      Nippledozer I'd say that the LS series is a testament to my sentiment... roughly similar in weight and dimension to many JDM blocks from the period and vastly superior in most ways... in addition to the hordes of '90s JDM owners who swap out their older mills... for you guessed it... LS engines. Of course my heart will forever reside on the hot rod side of the fence... so I could care less what engine somebody sways for what ever... as evidence I'd like to see somebody swap a 90s rotary engine into a relatively late model corvette... c4 or c5.

    • @Nippledozer
      @Nippledozer 9 лет назад

      jeadelmann90 I love LS motors but i fail to see how the good qualities of an LS make things like rotary engines or turbo 6 cylinders bad. For example, a stock 2jz with nothing more than a turbo upgrade and a new head can push 1000hp. Mitsubishi and Honda also put out many great four cylinders, and nissan with turbo 6s. Mazda engineered a 4 rotor engine for the first time that put down crazy numbers. The Japanese cars of this era are legendary for a reason.

You know it's not about the more power you'll get from either one because they both are reliable and can with stand abuse with power but the LS is cheaper for the owner and just fits their life style. Preference is involved when choosing a engine but the build has so many other components being moved around and what not.

    Interesting comment about lack of room. I'm smidge over 6 foot and I fit fine with plenty of room to space in 2+0 and the seat isn't even all the way back....
    Also when my engine went (not a reliability issue, was a bad install of a boost controller from a shop cause it to boost only one side of the engine) I got my engine rebuilt with parts imported from America for 8k (AUD so 5.8k USD) , ACL Rods, Wisco Pistons etc. putting out 320kw at the wheels (430hp) and had it for 5 years with zero problems.... so no reliability issues at all. So I guess I've experienced the complete opposite of what is being said in the video.
