  • Oncidium orchids, as well as their intergenerics, complex hybrids which include, Miltonia, Miltassia, Brassia and so on, have a unique growth patttern. If you are used to growing Phalaenopsis, oncidiums might be strange at first due to their pseudobulbs and way of growth. Once you get used to them you will see they are easy orchids to care for, so this is a presentation of their growth cycle.

    Finally--I have within the year branched out from phalaenopsis to dendrobiums and oncydiums. After blooming, I had no idea where new growth or blooms would come from. Your video was perfect, especially with the sequential growth stages. Thanks so much

    I picked up a Shari Baby about 5 years ago that had a few blooms left on the plant. For four years I had no flowers! Not one spike/or bloom. I recall my first spike with the swollen black blooms - I thought it was dead! In any event , In the last year or so, this plant has not stopped blooming! Spike after spike, double spikes, triple spikes and more from all over the plant! And when I pulled it out from the edge of my terrace from the sunny spot I had parked it in (according to some video I saw who suggested these plants like sun) I pulled out a MONSTER of a plant that had more than doubled in size! Which is amazing as I’ve always treated this particular plant as a “wet ‘em and forget em” given that she refused to ever spike for me!! Guess you never know!!

    I just noticed today a tiny little THING growing from my oncidium who has been appearing to struggle, this video with the different stages really helped Dani as I now KNOW it's the itty bitty makings of a new pseudobulb! Thanks for your extra detail!!

    I'm so glad I found your channel. I've been avoiding orchids for so long because I know how easy it is to fall into the orchid pit. I recently took a plunge and bought a brassada hilo sunrise and an oncidium rex. I haven't had them for long but I think they will survive.

    Thank you! My oncidium types all started new growth and I wanted to know what to expect as they matured. I found the explantion of what goes on after the sprout to pre-pseudobulb stage most helpful. Now I know why i wasn't getting any root growth until now. This video is helping me to stay patient LOL.

    Another Great video I started with Phals like you mentioned enjoyed great success growing Phals started with one and now have 8 in my three season heated porch here in CT, and then moved into Oncidium and yes it was in spike when i bought it , it bloomed and never bloomed again it outgrew the pot i divided it those never bloomed and outgrew their pots divided again, those never bloomed , However i looked a few days ago and to my surprise one of them has six flower spikes felt like i hit the lotto, I i have determined it must be a light and or fertilizer issue, thanks for all you do !!!!!

    This is a huge help to me. I was stressing about my Oncidium which has two tiny, flimsy shoots at the back. I kept wondering why the new shoots are not growing (I purchased the orchid with these shoots and thought they were new growth). I now realise that is because they are OLD BACKBULBS! So having read that the new shoots need space to grow when repotting, I potted the orchid leaving these old backbulbs extra space to grow, I really should have put the orchid the other way around!

      My oncidium is not doing well. It is one of those yellow ones. I bought it a few weeks ago with slightly shrivelled bulbs but respectable. It was put into the Orchid focus mix and is shrivelling fast. The roots are not great from when I bought it in a mix of what looked like soil with spagnum plug shoved up it - though I'm sure it had one or two OK roots and a few more "maybe" roots I decided not to cut at the time. I have one of those store-bought mixes with peat moss and bark that I used on my miltoniopsis which is doing good (mixed with orchid focus to stop it being too dense). I am considering unpotting the oncidium and using the store mix 50/50 with orchid focus to retain more moisture until new roots come. I am now watering daily in the plain orchid focus mix and the bulbs are looking more and more like those ones in your orchid ICU...

    Just found an oncidium (dancing lady) growing on the side of the road with so many beautiful yellow blooms, took a bulb with a flower spike home but had to cut the bloom stalk off cause it was too big to fit in my bag +the flowers were already damaged after the recent storms. It also has a new growth already. Hoping it either branches off and reblooms or the new growth roots well.

    Everything mentioned is true, according to experience. The psychopsis is a sequential bloomer that may continue using the same flower spike/raceme. Psygmorchis; trichocentrum, and other miniature oncidium-types do not have a pseudobulb (present) but may behave like the rest.

    Thank you Danni! These growth stage videos are fantastic. It is hard to find this kind of information and you explain it all very well. I have also been looking for a video on the various sicknesses that can come about and what they look like on different orchids, for example I have a Vanda Miss Joaquim and one of the segments on the stem has turned yellow but I seem to have new growth on the top and I cannot find information on if it normal or sick or what I should do, there is actually very little information on the Vanda with terete type leaves. I also live in the Northeast most of the videos I come across are from warmer climates or greenhouses. Could you possibly create a video or direct me to the right place where I might find out if my orchid is in need of a rescue? Thank you so much and have a Merry Christmas. Nichole

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 лет назад

      +Nichole Coutant Hi Nichole, well I am not sure first about your Vanda, did the leaves fall and the stem appears dry? if this is the case the stem might not be dead, it is just covered in the dried remains of the leaves. Not sure exactly what type of info you are looking for, I would direct you, but you can send me a pic here in a message maybe I can tell if you have a problem. just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)

    Thank you for this video. I feel like you skipped over something. How do you care for the spikes?? I was given a large Oncidium orchid, I don't know what type it is yet. In Dec it started growing 5 flower spikes. They quickly grew very tall, then stopped. It's March and they haven't changed in 6+ weeks. They are still green so I think they are alive but I don't know what they need. Should they be misted? Should I use different types of fertlizer? Is it just a waiting game now? How long until they start forming buds?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 лет назад +1

      Hi, I think you might refer to an old backbulb? In time pseudobulbs can lose their leaves and remain bare. There are also deciduous orchids that lose all their leaves in winter, so the canes remain bare.

    Hello Danni! I'm Eugenia from Athens, Greece. I received a huge oncidium as a gift for my son's birth two and a half years ago and it is blooming every year since then with flower spikes! I have it outside the house all year long, I water it eekly and I have trimmed its leaves because they were more than meter long! I have fertilized it maybe twice a year with whatever I put in my all other plants and in general, it is growing in auto mode :-). My question is: should I repot it since I have it for so long? what medium should I use? or will I disturb its peace??? this is going to be a huge project.... Thank you for all your wonderful videos and tutorials!! xxx

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 лет назад

      Hi Eugenia, that sounds like an awesome specimen :D ok with these orchids things are different. The more and bigger structures the orchids have, the stronger they are. I am not sure how much medium it has left, it might all be roots in there. Whatever medium there is, even if acidic, the orchid doesn't care as it continuously puts out new roots. If you damage the root system you might set it back yes, but it might bounce back fast. If you don't repot it it might be ok, it could already have its habitat there with bugs and micro organisms from outside that keeps it in good shape. It might also one day decline. So it has to be a judgement call. Old big orchids lose their medium in time as roots grow and bark desintegrates. I personally would try to read the orchid and if you want to repot it, wait for new root tips to start growing ;) good luck!

      +Milena Farias that's a great idea, thanks for suggesting :D about your orchids, the Miltonia is not an oncidium, it's actually a species orchid but it does take pretty much the same care. The Beallara is a complex hybrid that has Oncidium in her genes as far as I remember.. needs the same care as oncidiums basically :)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 лет назад

      Hi Renee, well I think there are 2 possibilities. 1 environment shock, if your environment is very different that the store one the orchid just needs time to adapt to it, thus less energy devoted to spikes or even total cut of resources towards the spikes 2. the orchid has some issues, an inspection is good. Check the roots, leaves pseudobulbs, see if there is anything wrong with it. hope this helps :)

  • @artistenoire

    Oh gosh, one more question.
    When I repotted my oncidium-type orchids today, their new growths were only very weakly attached to the mother plant.
    So weakly attached were they, that I felt I could just effortlessly pull them off and put them in sphagnum and start a new plant. Obviously I did not actually do this, but is it normal for the new shoots to come up and be so loose from the mother plant?
    Especially on the nelly islers (who I decided to repot for fear that their roots were dying in the store mix, and to eliminate any pest problems in the roots as they already have scale :( ), the new growths almost didn't seem to be attached to the mother plant at all!

      Hi Astrid, well I don't find it very normal, but I might have a different perception on things, any way you could share a picture? or make a video? and by the way, good thing you didn't separate them! they wouldn't have made it alive ;)

      Hey there!
      I made a quick video to show what's going on.
      Now that I have been looking, I am starting to wonder if maybe the nursery took out an old pseudobulb that the growth should have been attached to, and that is why it is kind of alone?
      But really it doesn't make any sense the more I am thinking about it.
      I also don't know what to do with this horrible scale insect- I might just buy a new nelly from a more reputable grower if these don't recover.
      How will I know when the scale is all dead, anyway? These shells won't come off at all!
      Here's my video, and thanks for taking the time to watch and to answer my numerous questions!
      Loose new growths?
      Forget missorchid Girl, you are more like missorchid Queen! haha!

      ***** ow I hope it didn't go into the spam section, it usually does this when someone shares a link, I have to review the comments but some get lost :( here is what I wrote:
      Hi Astrid, you sure those are scale? doesn't look like it me, looks like the plant has some blisters. Here is an article on it staugorchidsociety.org/PDF/EdemaonOrchidsbySueBottom.pdf The first small growth looks like it's coming from that little psb, as far as to why it is detached it's a mystery, it might be mechanical damage, maybe they just stuck it in the pot when they repotted the plant at some point. The big new growth is plain weird, it shouldn't be completely detached from the mother bulb. If it still holds on to the mother bulb it's ok, it can be fed, but if not, I'm not sure what will happen to it. Keep them together, if they are still attached all is ok. I wouldn't buy another Nelly just yet, have some patience to see how these girls are doing :) and regarding when an orchid will produce flowers and new growths, it's not an absolute rule so you could have flower spikes and big growths at the same time ;)

    • @artistenoire
      @artistenoire 9 лет назад

      Well, I wouldn't mind buying another nelly isler- they have very quickly captured my heart!!
      However, I think I will save my christmas wish orchid for something new like the psychopsis or my first paphiopedilum or the miltassia "sweet señorita"- I can always make cute eyes to my boyfriend on holidays until he buys me an orchid haha!!
      Thank you for the suggestion about blisters- I never would have guessed it! Because these spots are basically impossible to wipe off, I will assume they are blisters rather than scale. I feel very relieved thinking that it's just blemishes rather than an infestation, though!
      Maybe it would be helpful to other people if you made a video comparing scale and blisters so people will know the difference? They do look similar at first. That article on blisters is great, too!
      Thanks again, and have such a wonderful day!

    so I got my Oncidium Orchid in February which was doing really good, but now (a month later) the blooms are wilting off. Is this a normal duration of time to have blooms?

    • @MissOrchidGirl

      +Devany Eastman hello, yes this sounds normal, a month is an adequate time for an Oncidium to drop blooms, depends how much it stayed in bloom before you purchased it as well.

    I have an Oncidium orchid which I purchased about 3 months ago. I noticed that I have a new growth but it looks like I have LOTS of new air roots as well which are growing about two inches above the top of the pot. Do I just let it continue to grow like this or try to re-pot it? I'm wondering HOW to repot it since it looks like I'll never be able to get it in a pot without the old pseudobulbs being planted underneath the medium which I'm sure is a no-no. I have looked at several videos about care and re-potting but haven't seen anyone's with as many air roots as this one. Those air roots look healthy but I'm just not sure how to re-pot or if I even need to re-pot at this time.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 лет назад

      +dig2gro Georgia Hi, well some oncidiums do have the tendency to be climbers (pseudobulbs grown higher and higher) and they are always tricky to repot. But maybe you would find it easier to mount it. With these types of Oncidiums I usually cut away the older pseudobulbs, especially if they are tiny and old and just repot it normally (I don't cut everything, I leave at least 3 psb on the orchid, or more). Usually they produce some aerial roots but some roots which go into the pot as well. You could just mist the aerial roots from time to time. For now if this orchid needs to be repotted due to old media, pests or if it was never repotted, you could mount it or try to pot it, but offer maybe some more sphagnum moss to the side which is up. You can also DIY a sort of a basket, it is particularly useful for these Oncidiums, here is a video from Brad with a cute design for a basket ruclips.net/video/PGCdEZHKN10/видео.html

    would you say Oncidiums are slow growers in relation to Phals or other type of orchids?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 лет назад

      +Chevi D well depends.. with Phals you don't see them grow necessarily, you see them make leaves, with oncidiums you see them make new pseudobulbs and take over the pot :) they don't have fast growth rhythms though if you compare them to other house plants :P

    Is there a way to separate the pseudobulbs of oncidium in order to create new plants?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 лет назад

      Hi, yes you can divide the plant. Each division should have at least 3 psb though to get a decent growth speed. Separating individual bulbs will most likely set the plant back a lot. Here is a division tutorial if you are interested ruclips.net/video/1kACzEUoCfg/видео.html

    Hi Dani!
    This video was very informative! I recently purchased an Oncidium Turtle Shell Orchid and have been reading up on how to care for it. Quick question: Did you create the support system you have for your oncidium, the one at the end of the video or did you purchase it? I really like how the wire goes all the way around, keeping it very neat!

      @veematamoros 9 лет назад

      Yay! I'll give it a try this weekend.
      Also, I repotted my oncidium this week, but not sure if I added too much bark because the medium feels dry. I watered it on Monday. Would you recommend adding more sphagnum moss or watering more often? I've never owned an oncidium orchid before and I'd hate to kill it :(

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  9 лет назад

      Veronica Montemayor Hi Veronica, well bark can work as well for Oncidiums, you just need to water more frequent. When the media is almost dry, it needs a drink. Moss can make your life easier, but you need to provide ventilation holes on the sides of the pot if it's plastic, to avoid complications. So it's a matter of trial and error, just need to figure out what works best in your environment. I personally use a mix of bark and sphagnum, but never only sphagnum. Good luck!

    Hi Dani,
    Thank you again for your advice to my previous questions, they were helpful. I was wondering if you could help me again. I have just bought a Miltassia Dark Star "Darth Vader" and a Miltoniopsis Vexillaria (pansy orchid) which could be the water. I fed them with the orchid food that "promotes flowering" as they are currently in flower. The Darth Vader has slightly wrinkled pseudobulbs but otherwise the orchid looks healthy and there is no funky smell from the medium when watered. The pansy orchid has a couple of accordion-like leaves but according to the vender, it was due to the varied weather changes. They both came in small pots and wondered if I need to repot them. I could never tell if the pots are too small compared to the size of the plant. I hope you could let me know what I should do.
    Also in regards to identifying the orchid names it was really hard to identify what my pansy orchid it is as I tried to google it with the description of my orchid and I even went on Pinterest to see if there was a similar picture. Unfortunately the difficulty I faced was that there would be a few pictures that looked like my orchid but they had different names so it is very confusing! What do you think? Am I able to send you a picture of my orchids to help with my dilemmas? I would love to hear from you. Thanks heaps :-)
    Christine

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  9 лет назад

      Hi Christine :) well I always advise people to repot new orchids, not because the pots are too small, but because the media might not be appropriate, it might be broken down or might have pests. After enjoying the flowers I do suggest you repot them just to see the state of the root system. regarding identifying orchids, it is sometimes impossible, I have a few that will always be nameless :) you can upload a pic to photobucket or another site and sen me the link here in a comment :) good luck!

      Thank you very much for your advice. I do have another bud for my pansy orchid that will bloom soon so should I wait till this one finishes flowering? And with the "Darth Vader" orchid, should I cut down the spike when it finishes flowering? Do they have similar characteristics as the phalaenopsis in regards to new branches for flowering? Sorry to inundate you with these questions!!

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  9 лет назад

      Christine Cortes hehe no problem :) yes you can wait till the flowers drop, they don;t last too long anyway :) with the Darth Vader it is safe to cut down the spike after the flowers drop, in 99% of the times the spike will dry and there will be no more branches ;)

    Hi Danny, my new pseudobulb was the new growth of a healthy pseudobulb and was having new leaves of its own until it got the black rot. I asked you about it before in a different video. It finally died but the old pseudobulb still looks ok, just a little bit shriveled. Is there any hope for it to put out another new growth, which will have a spike of flowers? Here's its picture. I noticed the bottom of the old pseudobulb is smooth, does that mean it still healthy?

      +Nam Tran CMyers Hi, that looks pretty good actually, just make sure you keep this orchid in a ventilated area and avoid water on its leaves or inside the new growths. I think it has chances to bounce back and look s like you did a good job on potting it :)
