What topics in development economics do you find interesting?
I’m struggling to come up with a topic in development economics that I can find data for my research honours 🙏🏿
So many: labor economics, returns to education, returns to health, gender inequality
Structural change and globalization, inequality, technology adoption and innovation, private sector involvement in the agricultural sector of developing nations, development finance. I am doing a master's in Agricultural Economics. I am also interested in using other social science disciplines like anthropology and history to better understand the issues I mentioned above, especially within the sub-Saharan Africa context. What do you think?
“ when you study economics it’s about making people’s life better “ nothing can be more motivating to study this subject
Absolutely
As an economics undergraduate its frustrating how little exposure i've had to other fields of economics even as I enter into my higher level courses. Without this channel I would've never known there were so many varying schools of thought.

Thanks RUclips for bringing me here. Sometimes even I don't know what I need but algorithm does.
Thank you, this was a beautiful video (how you structured it, the storytelling, your enthusiasm)!!!
Thank you, professor, for offer us an easy access way to clarify our doubts in economic research. Its been a great pleasure to find this youtube channel. I watch your videos every morning after I wake up just to get the sufficient motivation in order to continue with my researcher formation. Big hug from Mexico!
Thank you for this awesome video. I'm currently studying environmental economics and public economics but health economics in developing countries has always been my favorite.
Thank you so much sir.. you've opened my eyes to a whole new way of seeing development economics..I've always loved this topic..but I've not seen it so simplified in the way you just did... Thank you so much!!🇳🇬
Hi Craig.
A WONDERAMAZING job you're doing.
I'm here in Nigeria and I'm learning what I've never heard or seen before in Economics, thanks Prof.
Please do a video on SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.
Thanks for this fascinating video. I’m currently studying development economics and this video motivated to delve deeper into the world of development economics.
Your ideas on economics are incredible and humane. You’re awesome! 💪🏿
Thank you so much for this powerful video! I have relatively recently started to approach development economics and your videos about it are playing an important role in my understanding of the field and motivation to dig deeper into it. My interest in the area has grown to the point I want it to be the field of my undergraduate dissertation. So I have an important question for you: could you please tell me what you think would be the most interesting country to write about?
This is awesome, starting my postgraduate degree economics this year (acceptance pending- holding thumbs hahaa), the university offers development economics as an elective module, definitely going to take it 💪
Thank you for sharing!!
Great and compeling video. The area (rural or urban) where an earthquate hits should be taken into consideration when counting the number of death
Thanks for the video! Great example of a problem that a developmental economist would solve
the great escape was my first real ecomics book. It showed me that the world is very complex (and not so simple like they teach you at school) and that I have to read more, or rather want to read more
Congrats for 10k subs. Please do some interesting concepts in Agricultural Economics.
Thanks! I'll have to research agricultural economics more before I do a video. I'm not saying no, but it won't be next week!
That's a very interesting study..i absolutely like this tropic 💜
I love this channel!
It depends on how you look at the data. Someone looking at average schooling against gdp per capita (not their percentage increase between time periods) will find a stonger positive correlation...i think.
Data can be presented in several ways...one can manipulate it enough to support an opinion sometimes
You are doing amazing work here. Very engaging your videos. Thanks for choosing to do this. You are perfectly located.👍👌☺
Thanks! I'm just trying to produce the greatest value!
Thank you for this video! I’ve been thinking about applying for a PhD in Developing Econ and this feels very inspiring. Also, I am Chilean, and I can confirm that buildings here are earthquake-proof, they moved along with the Earth as it shakes.
I was worried a Chilean response would be, "We didn't forget the earthquake!!"
The Earthquake in Haiti was closer to the surface according to my research and being closer to the surface this made it more destructive than the earthquake in Chile. But you are correct to say that infrastructure in Chile is more advanced and the standard of living in Chile is higher compared to Haiti. Personally when I talk about Economic Development I like to mention Disneyland, Disney World, Kings Island or even Seaworld Orlando. Bermuda is one of the richest islands in the Caribbean - perhaps the richest island - with income from tourism and offshore insurance as their main industries. Bermuda is a British Island Territory.
Your energy says it all :)
thank you so much for this video, that is exactly what I needed now. i am going to start undergrad economics next fall (international student in the US), and coming from a developing country myself this field of econ is incredibly interesting. do you think that development econ as a research field has more potential than other areas?
Could you make a video on career outcomes in development economics? I really like the field but I'm afraid I wouldn't manage to score a good job after college.
Where's the teacher absenteeism index data from? Id love to find a full report :) so interesting, great video!
Thanks for this video. Aspiring development economist here (completed my Masters a few months ago). I’ve seen it’s not the easiest sector of economics to enter if you don’t have a PhD. Any advice to get my foot in the door?
It all depends on where you want to make your career. There are tons of organizations that would hire without a PhD. The doctorate opens doors at the World Bank, but organizations in the country are starved for talent. Look at a country where you want to work and see what's available there.
Thank you
Hi. I loved this video! I have great interest in development economics especially since I live in a developing country- Namibia. I would like to know, where do you find the articles or studies you refer to in your videos. And what are some sites etc you would recommend to keep up witn economics around the world.
Thank you
A good place to start is voxdev.org/
Professor, thank you for the great educational videos. You inspired me to choose a thesis topic from the development economics field. Could you do a video about career paths specifically for the development economists with Master degree besides academia¿ Thank you¡

Here is a question I have been thinking about. If innovation is real, then why am I taking notes on an Ipad when my econ professor is writing on a chalkboard? I took a three dimensional calculus class and it would have been way more insightful if the professor was able to show the shapes and the areas in three dimensions.
I think the Ipad is one of best innovations for a student going to school. For me it is my most prized possession.
It is an amazing innovation. He uses a chalkboard because he/your school is considered a late adopter of that innovation. I have heard it referred to as the diffusion of innovation.
Great video. Can you tell me the name of the economist that did the study in Guinea-Bissau, please? Thanks.
Please upload more often if possible your videos are greaaat
Right now the opportunity cost of posting is high, so I'm posting as frequently as I can.
I'm interested in "Sustainable Innovation", and it's a self-directed learning process based on a self-directed curriculum, so if you have any resources/books/questions/insights/people/projects on this gigantic topic, I would love for you to share it with me, thank you (in reply or video form)! I only ask because I trust you (your expertise, your philosophy) :) Love from London from a 23 year old!
Have you looked at Roots of Progress? It's a great website with well-researched articles. He'll start you down the path of the history of innovation.
@@MarketPowerYT Thank you for the recommendation, I've read a few articles from Roots of Progress, they're fascinating!! Deffo added to my list.
Hello Craig... Happy to connect!!!...You deliver awesome content... Thanks for that! Could you please include International Economics in which could you also please explain the difference between International finance, International Trade, Monetary Economics and Financial Economics? What is your opinion on choosing between International Economics and Development Economics? And at last, may be as a part of this series, could you also include emerging field of economics like Environmental Economics, Space Economics, Neuro Economics, Cryptoeconomics etc?

Hey question! What type of internships should I be looking for as a second semester sophomore Econ/finance double major? I would like to pursue graduate school after undergrad and get a PhD. My GPA is in the 3.7 range.
Thanks for this. I just took a course in this and have been thinking of specializing in it. It's very interesting!! I just am not sure how many career prospects there are outside of academia. I don't think a Ph.D is very feasible for me. On another note, I saw your video where you suggested getting something published during undergrad is important to stand out. I have started working on some research on my own. I'm wondering, though, is it even possible to publish something (and where, google scholar?) while still being in undergrad without a faculty member signing off on it? I don't know if I have the relationships with my professors to get someone to help me with it. Especially because of COVID, it's extremely hard to build those relationships while never even seeing each other's face. Thanks for any tips! Love the channel.
Not a economists, rather I am stem student with minor in econ, you can submit your research to a double blind journal, so the relievers of the paper won't know if you are an unpublished undergrad or a noble laurate. However do your research before submitting your paper to a journal , because there are a lot of predatory journals out there. Feel free to share your discord if you want to ask sometimes else.
Just self-publish. Start a blog and share your findings. When you apply for a job, you can point to your blog as proof that you think about these problems in your spare time.
Hi, i study economics and have watched your videos about the fields of economics. It was very beneficial. Thanks a lot.
And i really want to know your opinion about agricultural economics.
can you estimate or prepare a video about agricultural economics and its future aspects?
Can students choose this fiel? Is it good or bad?
Thanks for your attention in advance.
Love devecon. What is your opinion on Angus Deaton's critique of RCTs?
RCTs are a tool with limits. But we don't stop using screwdrivers just because they can't cut wood. Tools contribute to different solutions.
I heard that Levitt call out.
And the upside-down Australian classroom. Really good bits in this video. Great content embedded in great content.
I am a Physics Masters graduate from India, looking for a shift to economics, sheerly excited by the potential of doing impactful work in Developmental Economics (I have read Poor Economics and was very much influenced by the ideas discussed there). Any idea how I go about making a formal career (academic) here?
As far as I know, having very decent mathematical background and good academic performance already helps to get into the Econ PhD programs. What you would need now is probably a very good statement of purpose with the specific topic or subject you want to research. This applies to US programs though, this might differ in EU and Asia.
I just have one question how much math you employ in subject of devlopment economics at academics level
No more math than the typical economics field, and even less in some cases. A lot of the math is about learning why you do certain things. I never do "serious" math in my work.
Prof, why did you use log for gdp/capita?
Taking the log transformation tames the outliers and makes it easier to compare the relative size of economies.
Greetings big bro. I am contacting from UAE(came here for greener pastures) but a Cameroonian by nationality. I have a degree in Economics but would love to go further into studying Development Economics.
Could you please advice me on the course I have to take.?
How can I find a job in development economics? Lots of companies on handshake and indeed are more into tech and business.
I am very interested in developmental economics, and I would love to make a career out of it. However, I have been warned against it because of the lackluster pay. I’m not saying that I need a huge salary, I just want to be financially stable. Do you think dev Econ is a safe career path?
Loved the video by the way - very interesting and informative as well as enjoyable
The typical organizations tend to pay lower, but there might be opportunities outside of the development groups. Take fintech. One of the biggest challenges is getting money across borders. Fintech companies might provide careers where you help poor countries and still make a living. Or SpaceX is trying to bring broadband internet to poor countries. That's another place where you're pursuing your goal but at a company that will pay.
It is so nice to see how passionate you're about development economics! :)
Iwho are noted, development economists? besides Dreze, Duflo, Deaton, Banherjee, Christopher Udry, Amartya Zen,....?
Lant Pritchett is an underrated development economist.
"We're not focused on silly questions like 'do Sumo wrestlers cheat in their matches?" LOL subtle dig at Freakonomics
Greetings my able Professor. I'm a Cameroonian living in my country and I'm applying to study a MA in Development Economics and I'm required to write a strong letter of intent. Please could you direct me on how to go about it?
Thank you.
