Hey! Welcome to the comments. This is probably the most complex flashing method there is. I just posed a new version that is SIGNIFICANTLY easier and has nearly zero installs! ruclips.net/video/RxUmyFUajiE/видео.htmlsi=zDHGx_agU0emQlma Thanks for watching!
This shit is so damn cool. I don't have the patience to sit down and code anything, let alone learn how to code, but having such a thorough walkthrough will make this process of making use of something that i actually paid for so much easier. Thanks RipRod!
I installed Python, but typing "Python --version" into Terminal is giving me an error, and even after adding the 2 Python paths into the "Edit environment variable" window, my computer still says "Python was not found". Any ideas? I really want to install DeskThing
@@emmanuelekowarthur6688 I just had to go back into the Python installer, modify the install and check the "Add Python to environment variables" box. Now I just need to figure out how to install and use the apps in DeskThing, because the desktop GUI looks totally different now with v090 than it does in this video
(*Edit*) I got it! Thanks for the video! Coffee headed your way! :) -The Git step is throwing me, I'm not super savvy with cmd line so I don't know who to properly configure Git to work to grab the information in the cmd line in the video.-
When I first downloaded python and did python --version it didn't work, I fixed it by reopening the installer, clicking Modify then Next then checking "Add Python to environment variables" then clicking install. After doing that i was able to run python --version.
Awesome! Good to hear. I probably should've covered that in the video. Once v0.9.0 drops, I plan on making a more polished tutorial that runs through all the steps needed for the flashing process. There has been a lot of developments recently in the Car Thing hacking community!
Ay this video is great and all but I hope to see a better tutorial, my brain cant handle how fast you go. But again, no worries, looking forward to the 0.9.0 tutorial!
I think I'm a bit confused as to where you are stuck. Can you join the discord? I can probably help you better over there with screenshots n whatnot. There should be a new video dropping soon that covers the process though!
Having trouble attempting to extract the 8.4.4_adb_enabled-new.tar.xz archive file. It doesnt default give me an option to extract so I attempted to use 7zip and it wouldnt extract and show all of the .dump files that yours did. It just extracted itself back as the tar.xz file. Any help?
Yeah! Go to thingify.tools , it's the new home for the images. The latest image, v8.9.2, should be just a normal ZIP file. Good luck! If you want a faster response btw, I'm a lot more active on the discord
Great tutorial! I got to run Deskthing on my device, but can't seem to work with Spotify. Is there a tutorial on how to setup and configure the spotify app? Thank you!
There is a written tutorial in the discord! I'm still working on getting a Wiki setup along with a few more videos out about it - but until then the discord is the best place for stuff like this
Okay so apparently I forgot to include that you need to install git as well! The download link for it will be in the description. I'll prolly reply to this commend with other issues or fixes as they come up
Ive been having issues with it not connecting on start up and it randomly disconnecting during use even if ive been actively using it and im not too sure why but i do get like 70+ errors that vary from "music playback not set" even though it is or "Cannot connect to port" after its been in use and connected.
Very strange errors In the latest version, you no longer need the Utility app. Instead, go to Settings (server settings) -> Music and set the playback location to Spotify (or MediaWin) If you keep having issues, I'd recommend opening a support thread on the discord!
I got to 3:46 "right click on file explorer." and that's not an option when I right click. I'm on Window 10, not sure how that effecting this process for me :(
Glad we were able to work it out in the discord! To anyone who is seeing this later, I would highly recommend contacting me via discord (deskthing.app/discord) so I can get back to you quicker!
I mean, if your switch has a browser then it basically has DeskThing. There will hopefully be a video on how to set up DeskThing on non-carthing devices in the future For now, there are instructions on how at deskthing.app/discord
Yes, it does have to be open. If you go to settings and check “Minimize to taskbar” then you can close out of the GUI and make it a background task It takes 0% CPU and maybe 80mb of ram while in that stage
Yes! It should The softlock will make it so you cannot connect to the app anymore. This uses the Spotify REST API - so it should remain completely unaffected
@@byronlopez2189 I know this is a late reply, but yes! The death date should only kill the spotify functionalities for the stock OS. Then you can switch to DeskThing and continue using spotify but with the API instead!
I keep getting "Found a potential device that is not ready" when I search for a device after putting it in USB mode anyone else have this problem or know how to fix?
I've done all the steps and everything checks out it recognizes its in flash mode, flash it and no errors. but when I unplug it and replug it, it boots back into spotify. any ideas why?
I believe all you need to do is download and push the client (Client -> Client Downloads and then Client -> Devices -> Push staged Webapp) The image you flashed only enabled ADB, it doesn’t actually have DeslThing yet
I am stuck on the git+https step. I downloaded the software that you had listed and used all the default options. Tried to use the command again and it still says that ERROR cannot find command "Git"
No, but that sounds hype! I will def add that to the Trello board as an up and coming app. I'll probs post updates in the discord There's a poll going on right now with where to foucs development and it seems to be leaning toward stability first, features later. But "features later" will include apps like discord, OBS macros, launchpad stuff, etc!
Ok, I don't know if you will see this. I tried to follow the video only after I had gone through the burn and recovery steps that I am back at square one with the carthing app just saying that I'm at version 8.8.4. Any ideas why this may be the case?
Yeah there could be a couple reasons: When the car thing first boots after being flashed, it will boot into the default OS but with ADB and RNDIS enabled. You can confirm this by going to the DeskThingServer and seeing if it shows up under devices. If it does, great! It's working. Download the latest client, push staged webapp, and open ADB socket port. If it doesn't, then something went wrong with the flashing process. It sounds like it worked though, considering you're seeing 8.4.4 (I would assume thats a typo?). However, to diagnose you can try a new cable, unplugging and plugging it in, fully closing and opening DeskThingServer, and restarting your computer (try one at a time and check if it works - no reason to do all at once). If all else fails, you can always attempt to flash again.
hey when trying to enter burn mode i hear the device disconnect and reconnect, followed by a message on the console saying "Failed to enter usb burn mode!" Is this to do with my cable? im using a type C to type c cable which is connected to the back of my pc
EchoLWS is on the right track. The Car Thing is incredibly picky about what cable you use. Most people have had the best luck with a USB A - C Cable plugged directly into the motherboard. Sometimes a powered hub works as well.
If someone can get me a mac, I absolutely would! (I don't have access to one - so most of my cross platform stuff has just been guesswork, best practices, and crossing of fingers)
Check the video description! I have a link to download GIT in there because I forgot to include it in the video. I already had it installed from a project several months back and didn't realize it was using that.
Yup! It can work on any device that connects to the internet and has a browser. Phones, tablets, ipads, tvs, pis, etc all can run DeskThing! In the setup, you can open a QR code to make connecting to it easier - scanning that will open it on any device connected to the same wifi as your computer.

For Spotify, does the DeskThing desktop app always have to be open in the background, or can it run independently?
Yes, it does have to be open. If you go to settings and check “Minimize to taskbar” then you can close out of the GUI and make it a background task
It takes 0% CPU and maybe 80mb of ram while in that stage

Yes! It should
