You should have named the shop Kevin shamed them
If you are in Playe De Las Americas I can really recommend the Chinese Bazaar just down towards the beach from the Columbus. Its next door to the Jersey Cow. They sell everything, I mean everything you may have forgotten. All great prices, no haggling or messing about. Great shop. you'll be amazed what they sell. Our No1 shop for everything.
You did the right thing making people aware of what can spoil your holiday
I experienced the same thing in Gran Canaria many years ago when buying a camcorder, it was horrendous, I endured over an hour of intense haggling with a very aggressive salesman
I eventually got the camcorder at the price I wanted to pay and it is still working to this day over 20 years later but I vowed never to buy anything other than booze and food again when abroad
Great vid
Cheers
Thanks
This takes me back! I lived in Tenerife for nine years and often walked along there.
Not just Tenerife, was in New York City and my camera charger lead broke, ( not the charger) Went into an electrical shop on Times Square wanted to sell me a complete charger and lead at $75, I said no just the lead. No he said its illegal to just sell the lead. I told him he was talking rubbish, and then got the security guard to escort me off the premises.
Went back to the hotel to ask where there was a reputable shop. The receptionist asked what I wanted, and he took me to a display cabinet in the foyer opened it up and there was the exact lead I wanted. Expected top price because it was in the hotel, but he wanted just $5. They even added the cost to the room bill.
Yip it's worldwide
I remember nearly getting ripped off when I was a kid. They would show a nice camcorder at a silly cheap price, then try and switch it for a cheap digital camera at checkout.
Great blog. You need to be careful. Lots of dishonest people everywhere
Thank you for your advice Kevin, it's good to know 🙂
Most, probably 99.9% of these outlets your are talking about, should be closed down by the police and local council, it is disgusting the businesses are still allowed to trade.
When you enter these premises remember you are a victim and not a customer.
Heyas Kev.I.N I have never needed to buy 'parts' for communications but a few years ago when cam corders were in vouge and I visited Gran Canary Jumbo centre the pricing was 'cheap' until the shop keepers started to add on extras like battery, cables etc which already came with the camcorder. A rite fiddle 🤔 Again most reception or holiday reps were the best to ask for bona fide shops 😎 Shops like Fude Grub for perfumes aftershaves and alcohol only sold the genuine article not like the knock off shops. The canaries are good for the real mcoy expensive goods from refutable outlets âs the islands are in a tax free area. Cheers DougT in Mancs
Well done , good advice 👏
Thank you for you video!
In the North West of Spain, around Catalonia and the Balearics, there's quite a few Chinese run shops that sell everything. We needed a charger and got one in there for €4:95, we use them every time as we can trust them. It's your money until you hand it over, just remember that. Be prepared to walk away.
yip defo be prepared to walk away.
Good video Kevin & a welcome warning as I have visited Tenerife many times & realise all you have to do is look in the window of the Electrical shops & they're out after you, trying to sell anything to you, yes there are some decent & honest ones but few & far between, good advice & have a good time!!!
Thanks
Did that in Lanzarote last December, cost me 20 euros for usb lead to connect phone to charger
That's totally unacceptable. I'm from Canary Islands and got to this channel because most of my mates are scotish and wanted to see how you think about us. Absolutely embarassing for us you had that experience in a shop. Normally where I'm from (La Palma) we've got just one price for everyone no matter where you come from. I bet they were indians or not locals. I know it sounds stereotypee. Sounds racist but is a common thing we've got in the islands. Sorry for that moment pal I really hope you have're having a great experience and come back more times until you feel like it is your second home.
P.S. writting from Bathgate!hahah
The Chinese shop opposite the los Cristianos bus depot has a large range of electronic stuff and much more . I picked up a packet of needles and an anchor last time I was there .
going to pop in there thanks.
thanks for the video
You're welcome
the thicker fast charging cables are 5 or 6 pounds here in the UK so 7 euros is about right. There is a big chinese shop in Los cristianos across from the bus station have a look in there it has everything.
planning a video in there Lee if they let me lol.
I know exactly where you got ripped off same thing happened to me years ago never buy anything from the electronic shops. People in them are rude and very false full. I was bitten never again! WATCH OUT. Good to see your back. Keep em rolling,
The bigger supermarkets sell usb leads, chargers etc so may be safer than the pushy electrical shops
Sound advice their Kevin, i always make it a rule to take 2 phone cables with me incase 1 goes belly up, electrical wise like buying a new phone, i dont do it for the simple reason its way to far to return it lol. Unfortunately there will always be shops in tourist areas that will try it on, on another note there's a scam going round if your at a cash machine where they spray some sort of white liquid on your back and offer to clean it, while another will try and grab any valuables, so its not just shops you goto keep your wits about but also out and about!! stay safe to everyone going out soon or already there!!
Thanks for the tip
Try the big Chinese shop in Los Xris if you just need a cheap USB lead or charger. All prices are clearly marked.
I had the same experience a few years ago Kevin, I forgot my razor lead and the shop I went in tried the same thing but I knew what they do with the prices and knocked him down but still paid more than I wanted, I was told by a friend of ours who has an apartment in Santiago three which shop to use they are supposed to be fair, it’s just down the escalator facing you on the right in Santiago three I can’t remember the name but you can’t miss it
thanks Dave.
We had same problem in port de Carmen shop well now for ripping people of wouldn't go in any anymore 👍
yip shame.
I've been to many hard sell time shares in the past on Tenerife ,which can go on for a few hours
I always stay in Parque Santago 3...not saying the pool is cold, but the Lifeguards wear Jumpers and Balaclavas lol
Lol
Hi Kevin just arrived in best hotel maybe see you walking about
Enjoy hols , I am not in tenerife at moment but might be soon.
You went past the best shop for chargers and cables Ale-Hop. Its a large chain of gift stores that sell all those little things for very cheap prices. I got a charger cable with 3 different plugs on it to charge different makes of mobile and iPad for 3 euros
Appreciate this information - another great vlog 👍🏻
Thanks
Thanks Kev, I have also had this happen, you would think as you say Tenerife everything was cheap so please be careful. Cheers Dave
Looks, like there is an opportunity for honest foreign businessmen in that case. I mean the tax advantages the islands offer are pretty damn good.
Good advice you have to be careful. Tip from me though ALE HOP sell leads for 3 or 4 Euros. ;)
We were nearly conned into buying a tablet in a shop under the stairs in Puerto Colon a couple of years ago. We soon realised it was a scam, and learned from a forum that there's never any backup, and probably wouldn't work at home. You should have gone to Ale Hop for a lead, there's a few of them around
thanks Les.
I think it’s good to give the heads up Kevin , as you say…people that aren’t sure, it’s not fair to get ripped off 👍🏽👍🏽
First thing, how you feeling Kevin. That is valuable advice you have just given, think the msg there is don't forget to pack a lead and also a spare.
Thanks David feeling good .
Absolutely right to give out a warning! Similar happened to me in a supermarket type shop near the little beach in Costa Adeje. Went in for a can of juice and while paying for it the guy offered me a brand new electronic gadget for something stupid like €20. I of course accepted and was directed to an office in the shop where the "IT expert" would set it up for me. Kid in a shirt and tie then asked loads of questions about what I would be using the gadget for and basically that I would be better buying a €500 gadget for my needs. I'm an ex sales manager so knew what I was in for from the get go. I wasn't in a hurry and it was actually quite fun knocking him back. But yes, you definitely need to be on your toes.
ah thats a common one thanks i need to do a longer video than this !
@@ScotsmaninTenerife 9’
Our "home away from home" is always PS3. Have stayed there 9 times. And the shop-people in/under PS3 are horrible. Spec. the camera/phone etc -shops. But after all these years, they have stopped bothering me. Some years ago I had a "tantrum" to one of the sellers in a photoshop on the street-level. We had to pass him x times a day, to go out and in to our aptm. After that, no-one bothered us!! The year after, when we arrived, he was very nice, said hello and welcome back - but never asked me to buy anything. And neither did the others :D :D So now we havent been there for a couple of years, I'm looking forward to tell him to xxxxx - if he doesnt remember us, and askes if we need memorycard, lenses, phones etc. :D :D Ps. Loves your videos.
thanks
Great advice Kev. A lot of them show Samsung tablets for €80-€90 and when you ask about it they start with the bs and tell you it hasn’t got wi-fi and the cost of a phone contract but if you buy this unbranded tablet for twice the price you get it all. Then comes the sting they ask for a €50 deposit and ask you to come back later because the person who sets them up isn’t in. When you go back the heavy sell starts again pushing up the price. My advice is DO NOT BUY electronic items from any of these shops they are ALL THE SAME. HARD SELL. Be warned
Yip tablet scam Well known
Anytime you holiday makers need USB leads/chargers or pretty much anything try the shop under los Dorado by the Columbus great prices and no hassle at all, great vid by the way
Glad you done that vid. Had a nasty retailer in an electronic shop in benidorm. Yet went into another one and they were great. Am not easily intimidated but as you said it annoyed me for a few mins thinking about it.
yip its a pity for the good ones, I will do a video showing some good ones one day.
Good advice & video Kevin - those shops were ok 20years ago when car cd players were a rip off here, wouldn't trust them now.
Go to the big supermarkets or Ali Hop.
Great advice Kevin, pretty sure I know which shops you mean by the PS3,I'm on a lot of Tenerife Facebook groups and have read many posts about elderly folk being taken advantage of with electrical products, if it's being overcharged or sold a cheap alternative.
Yip need to be careful.
Another good video Kevin with good advice 👍
Thanks 👍
Chinese shop next to the beer garden, got nearly everything....nearly.
Agree definitely Chinese shop, probably get a USB under 5 euros
We got a cable from a supermarket and paid next to nothing for it in supermarket. Small Chinese shops usually have cables too at a cheap price. We never go in electronic shops there.
Wouldn't the hotel has these cables that others have forgotten. Great tips nevertheless.
Thanks for the warning Kevin
Wow !!! That’s terrible 😳 Hope you’ve got over the dreaded Covid now Kevin 🤞🏻
thanks I am doing ok Angela.
@@ScotsmaninTenerife great soon be back on your walks again 👍🏻👏🏻😊
Yes, keep well clear of these electronics/photography shops, so common in ANY touristy resorts almost anyplace (Gran Canaria, Miami Beach, etc.,etc.) in the world. They know you are keen to buy a filter/spare battery/additional lens for your beloved hobby the second you walk in, in a feel good mood on holiday. Resist with all your might and in the USA for example use the couple of very well established honourable shops/websites who sell to professionals. We are fortunate to have the WWW nowadays to sort the ripoff merchants from proper, highly thought of sources of almost anything.
yip can imagine before internet would have been lot easier for these guys.
So true some are not very honest
Smashing it ,. Thanks Kev
Thanks
It’s the same in Fuerteventura and the perfume shops too, you need to be careful. They charge a price just a few quid less than the real thing and they really aren’t. They are just cheap fakes. One thing I didn’t come across this time in Fuerteventura, but which was really common about 20 years ago, was the time share scammers. They give you a scratch card, which of course always said you had won a prize and you had to go with them to collect it. All you got was some hard sell timeshare salesman wasting your holiday time. Quite aggressive too.
There is no need to go to Tenerife to get fleeced you only have to go to P C World in the UK
Just had an ice cream there 1 hour ago x
I will be there soon Megan, enjoy your hols !
R u here in tenerife right now kevin .if so might c u x
This is a problem in the Canary Islands, and many others places world wide. It's a case of hit and miss between lets rip of the tourist mentality or not. In fact, the Canary Islands are doing themselves no favours here, the only answer are laws to significantly fine local businesses for overcharging. Laws to make it illegal to trade without clear pricing. They need to have consumer inspectors posing as tourist to catch and prosecute anyone who engages in this crap until the rip off culture is replaced by honest and decent trading. The grass root problem is that the Government and locals don't care. Even the tourists themselves, do not care, because most of them are one time visitors, who expect to be ripped off and do not see the value in complaining or wanting everything to be proper and correct for the next person coming along behind them. This is the critical part of what I am about to say. The fact that nobody cares about the greater good and only about their own particular situation and nothing more.
This is a major part of exactly why we are where we are today, around the world in so many countries. It's the tip of the Iceberg across the whole spectrum of service and receipt of that service, from absolutely everything, from the medical profession, our politicians and especially the main stream media, who absolutely neglect to tell us the truth rather than bare faced lies and government propaganda. So long as people get their money, they operated on a buggar you, I'm bulletproof basis. You have all seen exactly the same attitude from Authorities and law enforcement, abusing the people, world wide. It is all connected in the hive mind, to accept everything thats dished out and only a minority questioning and standing up to the BS. The above story may seem very remote, but if you really think about it, you will comprehend that it is indeed symptomatic of everything that is rotten in todays world.
Hi Kevin, just to let you know the Ale Hop (certainly the one in Corralejo) is reasonably priced for phone accessories. Think your lead may have been cheaper there, worth checking it out. Thanks again for your videos.
Thanks
He's in Tenerife NOT Fuertaventura.
@@cabottaxi There's Ale Hop in Tenerife!
Is that Tenerife? Never been. Looks different. Can’t wait until Covid’s over and we can all travel safely.
not only the price some stuff. some items are fake,s. found that in gran cannaria
True
Most of what those shops sell are fake too,I wouldn't chance buying anything from 99% of them & you're right the salesmen are very aggressive when you decide you don't want to buy .Stay out of them .Very good informative vlog 👍
Thanks
Yes Kevin it’s good to point out the other side of things, I bought an apple charger €29, proper apple packaging, he pointed out that a guy across from him sell fake but his is genuine, think you know the ending to this……..won’t be scammed again.
Hi Kevin due to arrive Saturday afternoon whats it like for restrictions now...Been great watching your videos and seeing places we can visit when we there will be 1st time there...thanks
thanks stacey, I am not currently there but by time you arrive there will be virtually no restrictions apart from masks indoors. Maybe in theory no dancing but doubt thats enforced much.
@@ScotsmaninTenerife thanks Kevin i won't cry about no dancing shame ur not there was hoping to bump into you lol
I paid 25 euros for a USB lead in Puerto de la Cruz afew years ago. It was the first day of my holiday and my brain wasn't quite engaged. He also distracted me by talking about Southall near where I once lived. It was only once I left the shop that I realised what I'd done to my horror and shame!!!
All been there lol
Best to ask the hotel to recommend a legit shop for electronics, sunglasses, designer perfumes etc.
Some horrific stories on Tripadvisor.
Thanks for the tips!
Glad you posted the video Kevin, there are dodgy liquor stores as well, scary that youngsters might buy and drink.
Lol, you were possibly the 101st person that day telling him it was a rip off!
Lol
A lot of electronic shops around the canary's have crap sales people in them pulling stunts like that. They deserve naming and shaming / drumming out of business.
👍for the info Kevin
The People in these Spanish shops have been pulling tourists pants down for years........since the Asian stores arrived in the last 20 years they're going out of business and this vid is a classic example of why! Nice one mate.
Avoid Doctor advice shop in Los Cristianos charges 20 euro for everything in the shop product was 4.30 euros on Web rip off
I wouldn’t buy anything expensive in Tenerife if anything goes wrong with it when you get back home how can you take it back
You book another holiday! 🤣
yip true
lol
You can get phone chargers in ale-hop, really cheap and they last.
Thanks
You lucky thing. We would all give our eye teeth to be over there too.
Surely if they put normal prices on things they would get more people in the shop instead of relying on ripping off the odd vulnerable person..
unfortunately Jason they can make a lot selling tablets etc
Con men we got done years ago x
usb leads best price in tenerife is the Ale Hop shops ,very cheap
Ale-Hop do chargers.
If I could give advice don't go in any electronic shop seriously 😒
What nationality are these bandits..?
I think you are right to warn people Kevin, its not right to try to intimidate people and rip them off
It's because they think we are all sodding millionaires from the UK. Tried to sting me in Cyprus for a small pair of nail clippers .......€4.50, would cost you 50p in uk......they are at it everywhere and that includes the uk
It just isn't worth the hassle, it's fatal showing any interest looking at a phone/camera/watch in a shop window "they" are like vultures and they won't let go, if you check prices at home they will be more than likely be cheaper. You mentioned the San Ugenio, stay well clear of the shop opposite the cheap Wine/Spirits/Tobacco shop, they are like leeches if you aren't streetwise in Tenerife, it can ruin your Holiday , stay safe !!
very true can ruin a holiday if its high price item.
😎👍🏻
All electrical go to pasarela centre los cris
My daughter got conned buying a camera in one of those shops. I stood outside telling everyone not to go in until they refunded her.
Name and shame Kevin only way they will learn.Did you get the one that asks where you are from and he just happens to have a relative that’s there
lol he didnt use that patter Alan you can probably guess it wouldnt have worked lol , theres so many ones to mention might be better doing a video on the trusted ones.
your exact life is in beverly hill las Américas Tenerife dear kevin. it shows that you love him lol😎😌😉🌅🍻
Great work as usual 🔥What camera are you using?
Thanks , Samsung galaxy s21 or a12.
I'd rather do without than go in to those rip off merchants.
Currently in peurto del Carmen. Avoid the chinese souvenir shops. We have been short changed every single time in every single shop. One of two euros not a big amount but thd principle far out weighs it. Beware in PDC!!!
Wouldn’t buy anything from those shops, don’t trust any of them, same in Gibraltar 🇬🇮 wouldn’t buy anything electrical there either, thanks for sharing Kevin xxx
thanks
We had a very bad experience many years ago in Gran Canaria over a Travel Iron believe it or not! and because of the guys aggressive behaviour towards us I even got the police involved (advised to call them by hotel reception but I thought I was getting banged up as they seemed to be taking the shopkeepers word against ours) We have never stepped foot in another electrical shop overseas since!!!
Yip police not interested .
Yep police are in on it they take a cut
I never trust them shops
Hello Kevin is there any change in Spanish locator form when are they likely to get rid of it
Not heard anything , would think they will get rid soon can't see point at moment.
@@ScotsmaninTenerife ok thanks Kevin I'm off to magaluf on the 12th may and I've booked the Columbus again had a great time there in January and February I'm there 21st September until 5 th October hope to see you then
Are you out in Tenerife now??
My parents are out there and my dad was hoping to spot you whilst they were there. They go home Friday!
I've been living in the canaries for over a year and the south of Tenerife since July and the one thing that sticks out to me here the most is how low class the locals are compared to Madrid, although Madrid has its own challenges. The Spanish in Madrid are very closed so regardless of how long you've lived there or your level of Spanish you'll never be accepted like a native and the women are very ethnocentric! But Tenerife is a working class environment with the locals and the foreign residents. In other words don't ask these people for their opinion on any topic from politics to the war, to climate change etc, because not only do they not know anything about anything, they don't want to know anything. These people just float through life only concerned about their immediate needs! And by the way I'm fluent in Spanish. I've been in Spain since the late 80s and have managed to accumulate ZERO Spanish friends over all those years!
Don’t go guys. You can’t afford to be in the EU.
Never ever go into these shops they will rip you off every time. You can take that to the bank.
Ale hop shop
Thought you had COVID ?
this was filmed on last trip Patrick.
