  • Quick check of a known good CAN Bus.

    Here you see the Astro Meter that I have been using exclusively for the past 6 months, its a great meter for the price. The OTC DLC break out box is pretty sweet as well.
    Having some questions about tools that I use, and I want to show how quick and easy to test the CAN bus so I made this.
    This was on a 2016 Ford Fiesta

      The meter is a cheap one, the break out box is not absolutely necessary ( I have been getting by with out one until a month ago LOL) I am trying to show that you dont need a $300 meter to test things.

    Funny thing is that I bought that meter from amazon about a month ago because of you,lol...
    Especially cause it has that nice big screen and is just as good as the expensive ones.

      I have 3 of them that I use for hands on training, 1 for me personally. No problems so far, I have sold 4 to techs and no complaints yet

    That OTC box looks great, but it is over 3 times more expensive than generic breakout boxes on Amazon. The led on each pin and system voltmeter are not present in generic boxes, but I'm gonna guess they aren't necessary to do the task. It looks like the OTC box is fused as well, though with care and understanding that may be unnecessary....

    • @BrianMann216
      @BrianMann216  4 года назад

      That is correct, OTC box is more expensive. I am looking at other brands on amazon to purchase a few for the classes that I instruct. FYI the activity LED's can be misleading, just because they light up / blink does not guarantee the circuit is operating properly (IE the CAN bus LED's will blink when the bus is at 8 volts and sloppy signal) .

    As I go through your play list I see you have quite a few videos using the breakout box. I have one from AESwave but the OTC one seems to have a few more features. Thanks Brian ❤️

    • @BrianMann216
      @BrianMann216  4 года назад

      I am not aware of the differences, one thing for sure is the data activity led's will light up even if the signal is bad sometimes. So in my opinion I dont trust them. That's why I use the scope to verify, my pico was on bench at home working on another video project .

      If you keep watching I hope dont get bored! I make the videos to show any one interested the process and systems. And as you will see very similar. I want to teach people that there are many ways and paths we can take, and developing a strategy of their own is priceless.

      What is the problem make it yourself? There are a few cables, a few banana plugs female, an odb2 cable with the male adapter and a female odb2 plug. The leds and power display is optional because hey, you have a multimeter at hand.

    Thanks Brian Mann, Do you know what these baud rates are used for 500K, 250K, 125K? Every car has a gateway circuit board that all the modules connect to. The gateway circuit board converts the CAN signals into SAE J1850 signals, ISO9141 signals and ILS signals. How does this gateway circuit board work or what does it do? I'm not sure what SAEJ1850 signals and ISO9141 signals are used for and have you used them to troubleshoot car issues?

    Thanks, any reasons why a short in a car it called a Parasitic drain, what is parasitic in the car?

    • @BrianMann216
      @BrianMann216  5 лет назад

      Any unwanted current draw from the battery is considered a parasitic drain, draw , or load. Generally speaking aprox 50mA or more is bad.

    • @BrianMann216
      @BrianMann216  4 года назад

      The less will not light If a ground is not present, now the question is how "bad" can the ground be and still have a green light!?

  • @billwilliams6338

    Yes thanks, do you know why they call it a parasitic, what is parasitic is it the car wiring or load?

    • @BrianMann216
      @BrianMann216  5 лет назад

      The unwanted / or non engineered current draw is the "parasitic" load. The load that is unwanted is the "parasite"

    BRIAN MANN, When measuring a CAN High and Low signals how can you tell if its CAN buss 2.0A, CAN buss 2.0B or CAN FD? how do you know what to set the Baud Rate to when you don't know what CAN signal you have? If you want to Upgrade from CAN 2.0A or B to CAN FD, all you have to do is replace all the CAN 2.0A or B transceiver chips and replace them all with CAN FD transceiver chips? the CAN buss harness and CAN modules can stay the same only replace the CAN transceiver chips

    • @BrianMann216
      @BrianMann216  5 лет назад

      Bill it sounds like you are on a different level than I am have not yet replaced any CAN transiever chips, I have toyed with some ideas of playing with CAN chips and arduino boards.

  • @billwilliams6338
    @billwilliams6338 5 лет назад

    Normally cars parasitic drain is 50mA, but where or what is causing this 50mA of parasitic drain? the cars is turned off it should be zero i would think not 50mA

  • @billwilliams6338

    • @BrianMann216

      That is an idea. The most common faults I see are on 1 , 2 , 3 , 6, 11, 14, and ground problems between 4&5, and blown fuses for no B+ @ 16.

    Won't own an expensive meter. I'll buy a $25 one and when it burns up, oh well. I got good at electrical working for a Caddy dealer in the mid 90's and you just don't need a fancy one except if you want to do hertz but other than that, eh. I'd use a free one from Harbor Freight but they just quit working HA HA HA

    Do u think its worth the 200 $ price tag?

    • @BrianMann216
      @BrianMann216  4 года назад +1

      It is not cheap that is for sure. I do not have the lesser expensive units to compare to. I am going to purchase a cheaper version soon for a class that I am instructing and let you know. The one thing that I wish they did with the data bus activity would be to make It so the indicators do no light unless withing a " normal " voltage range. I have had can activity lights blinking when bus was way high and the high voltage was issue. Now that I said that it is up to us to understand what good in bed is so having a breakout Box allows us to probe into the DLC. The quality of the otc unit feels good will let you all know when I get the cheaper version.

    Care to explain why you see voltage from ground to can BUS high side for voltage drop??? You show and state it but don’t explain why you have the readings you do! In order to be a good teacher you need to be able to explain why you get the readings that you get! Not just say what you expect to see and call it good
