  • DR. WYNKOOP’S KATHARISMIC HONDURAS SARSAPARILLA NEW YORK.1855-1865. Open pontil. We’ve handled a few of these larger than life cobalt sarsaparillas and each one seems to have their own identity. This is a deep baby blue with the lettering completely readable which isn’t always the case. The pontil is about half-dollar size and quite crude. On close inspection the bottle looks to have been professionally cleaned evident more on the reverse than the front. Typically, these bottles are overall quite crude and exhibit the many years since it was made as this one does. The Wynkoop bottles come in different variants including a behemoth half-gallon size and they are occasionally seen in green and aqua. One of the earlier medicines, according to Peachridge Glass, Wynkoop copyrighted the words “Dr. Wynkoop’s Katharismic Honduras Sarsaparilla” on November 16, 1847. A terrific example that because of the cleaning and reverse panel scratches grades an 8.8 and displays like a 9.5. Some of the lettering is double struck.
