The greatest trick Stanley Kubrick ever pulled was convincing the world he could make good movies. 2001, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, all have terrible endings. There’s no conclusion or salvation, they just stop. It’s almost as if Kubrick got bored. If that was his intention for the audience……. mission accomplished!!!!!
Overrated? Nope. Not to the people who really loved the film.... Think of it as art, rather than just a movie. It forces you to fill in what's not spelled out.... Now, some folks loved this... while other folks loathed this.... And, this was true ever since the premiere of "2001" in 1968! ...OK, OK.., if it wasn't your cup of tea, then OK. There are many, many other movies for you....
Where are we going as a society? JK this is just in my opinion. This is one of my favorite films ever in my opinion. People can have their own opinion and I’m fine with this, but when I saw this to be honest, I did kind of lose some faith in humanity for a sec.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
As a movie and tv show enthusiast, I always try to watch highly phrased movies from every decade to be thorough, So after hearing all the hype about Space Odyssey, I recently watched it from beginning to end, And I can adamantly proclaim that this may very well be the most overrated movie I’ve ever watched, and furthermore it’s not even close to even being Kubrick’s best film! A very boring movie overall.
I agree that the film is overrated. I didn't mind the slowness, but I did hate the psychedelic sequence at the end. A filmmaker is supposed to be telling a story; that's why you go to see a movie in the first place, but it feels like Kubrick couldn't be bothered at that point. This argument that the viewer should work it out for himself is, for me, lazy. But also, the dialogue is so wooden; there was nothing interesting about any of the characters. When Dr Floyd addresses the team on the Moon about the monolith nothing passes between them to indicate that they are looking at the most important human discovery ever made. You'd think Kubrick would have put a character into that scene who could have expressed that. It looks to me like he saved money on the script to spend on the FX. And then there is the editing. I have freeze-framed and watched any number of times the moment when Dr Poole goes outside to fix the antenna to try and understand what sent him flying off into the space and I still don't know how HAL did it.
It does the tell the story just in an elliptical and abstract matter. The dialogue is intentionally wooden. It's about how humans have lost their soul and sense of wonder. They aren't in awe of what their tools can do. He even intentionally cast bland actors like William Sylvester. That's what makes the ending so moving.
This film isn’t overrated. It’s rated highly because a lot of people clearly love it, which makes it rated exactly how it should be. A better way of saying something is overrated would be to say that you simply don’t agree with the general rating and that you don’t like it as much as other people. Personally, I don’t understand why people like this movie. Maybe I ‘just don’t get it’, or maybe I ‘just had to be there at the time’, but to me this movie is a complete bore. So much so that I couldn’t even make it past through the last hour. I get the impression that a lot of people, especially of the younger generation, only ‘like’ this movie because they feel as though they have to; and that not liking it would discredit their taste in classic film. Personally, this is a 2/10, but that’s just my opinion. Really boring, however I do think the style and cinematography is great. That doesn’t make up for how uninteresting it is.
I haven't seen all of the film, but I liked it. I had two friends who read the books at they bashed the story, one them hated the last book because they pulled an Independence Day.
Remember overrated doesn't mean bad and this is only my opinion. What do you think about the movie?

You're right; it's overrated. It is a psychedelic drug trip. I really didn't like it at all.

probably the worst film I've ever watched. The entire thing infuriated me. legit, a 5 year old could make a better film.

Fifty year old movie isn’t cool? Seriously? It was cutting edge fifty years ago, of course it’s over rated now. FFS.
Movies arent just about effects
2001 is not for kids, by the way.
