    In the 80's that performance might just get you a blue belt, total shambles.

      I trained in the 80's. Slow and stiff karate in the west. I think you are looking back with misty eyes.

      Yes it was interesting, called up grade by grade (lowest to highest) and you only had to do the requirements for your own grade, the kata for that grade and then kumite. You only had to do extra if you were borderline. In essence it was very easy to prepare for your own grade a few weeks beforehand and pretty hard to fail unless you are particularly unprepared or lacking in something they are looking for. Totally unlike another style I used to do, where my grading was 6-8 lots of 2-3 hour sessions over the weekend at a camp ... just shows how it varies from style to style.

    I have one question. How much time does it take to earn a black belt in karate? Just first dan. If you train 3 times every week and you start as a beginner???

    • @widsonbcadet5630
      @widsonbcadet5630 3 года назад +1

      3 years at least! But the correct time is 5 years!

    • @DoomGuy-kf8fv
      @DoomGuy-kf8fv 2 года назад +1

      If you want to be good at least 5 years. Don’t focus on time focus on quality. When I got my shodan I was mopping the floor with other dojo’s sandans etc. experience and intensity trumps rank

      @angelopepeskordos 2 года назад +1

      Everybody progresses at a different speed, so it really depends. Consistent training (also at home, not just at the dojo) within the major organizations, you are expected to progress and reach shodan level within 4-6 years. Many take longer, most quit…

    3th dan? My God what a shame.

  • @markwalker4142

    I wouldn’t award them sandan. Their basics are sloppy and in a grading there is no room for mistakes. The stances are too high and vague. It is their instructors fault for allowing them to grade. Sandan is meant to be the hardest grading you do . I recall mine being brutal. Extremely physically demanding. I was graded by the WKSA under Sensei Shirai. Everyone grading was well prepared. Unfortunately, this is a modern disease and linked to the crap that is the WKF.
    I certainly do not believe these guys would have passed under Shirai. They simply are no where near ready and it’s not fair on them .

      We need to bring back true karate. It has become too relaxed, too feelings oriented. The idea of do or die is all but gone.

      I totally agree. I am brown belt and I think even I can do much better. Our grading was brutal. And no one is allowed to record

      I had 2 sessions back in that dojo in London in mid 80's. I wasn't impressed. I had just come from Japan after 3 months training. It was stiff karate. Of course there were no videos so we cant be critical. Good on these guys for giving it a go. All power to them

    Too little kime, and i my eyes not very "sharp". Timing is a bit "off".
    Stance too high (I think), but know that many JKA clubs are happy with high stances. Probably also much healthier in the long run (I have had hipreplacement in both sides).
    Kicking combo. Try and keep the kicking leg closer to the body when retracted.
    Ushirogeri is done with the kakato and not sokuto!
    Just my 5c :-)

    wtf is this total shambles, this hurts to watch that they're black belts not only black belt 3rd dan. In my karate this is max 4th-3rd kyu level
