How To Fix The Holley 1920 On Your Slant Six Mopar (Throw It Away!)

  • Today on Dead Dodge Garage, I show you how to fix everything wrong with the stock fuel toilet found on gazillions of slant six powered machines like the Dodge Dart, Plymouth Valiant, and even Dodge trucks. What you do is, you unbolt the Holley 1920 carburetor, slam dunk it right into the scrap pile, and replace it with a random Carter BBS from eBay. It’s just that easy.

    It might help if you said which carter bbs to look for. there are a lot of different models. I tried following your advice. There are exactly zero bbs carbs on E-bay for anything newer than "61. And every one of them are sold as parts only. In other words, junk. Will one listed as being for a late '59s to early '60s 225 work on a '73?
    I thought parts for a slant 6 would be everywhere, they made them for so long. NOPE. Carbs are nonexistent. Can't even find a new or rebuilt 1920. They're everywhere cheap for fords. None to be had for a mopar. Not interchangeable either.
    A word of warning for anyone getting into vintage mopar slant 6. GOOD LUCK. Parts are a bitch. I had to get valves from Australia. None in the US.

      Unfortunately you’re right. At the time I made this video, there were many listed. As you can see, this one showed up shiny and new in a box. Other commenters have informed me that this is no longer the case. There isn’t much I can do about that. No, an early to mid 60s carb will not attach to the 67+ linkage. It’s a problem.

    One of the problems is a 1920 has a metering block that can get dirty(and hard to clean). Plus, I don't like the leak point either. That's a very late BBS...they used those on 70-71's.

    Back in 1993, I had a 1920 on my 225/6 in my '73 Duster. It was kind of a weaksauce, power limiting carb, but it got good mileage, around 18-20. That winter, we got temps down to -22 F, and I had the fast idle adjusted JUST RIGHT. Even on the coldest day, I could go out to the car, pump the gas pedal once to set it on the fast idle cam, and crank it up. The Slant would start out idling very slowly, around 500 rpm, due to being so cold, but over about 10 minutes, it would warm up to around 1200 rpms, then I'd tap the gas once to take it off fast idle, and drive away! And no, I didn't wait in the car that whole time, it was too frickin' COLD!

Key here is mopars dont like holleys. Unless we are talking like something that needs a trash can with 4 holes in it. • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  2 года назад

      Whether Holley makes kits or not, aftermarket has them so it’s definitely still possible to “rebuild” them. Which is the same as cleaning, plus new gaskets and small pieces, so I’m not really sure I understand your point. Personally I think the BBS is better, and trying to make the 1920 idle is a waste of time. Every slant six car I’ve ever owned had a 1920 and had idling problems, usually requiring the choke to stay partially closed. Every 1920 (but one) I have ever dealt with had this problem. Apparently not everyone else has had that experience. I accept that, but stand by my point.

      I have seen a couple that work fine. I have seen many that will not idle unless the choke is partially closed. I know there is a lead plug that can be removed to clean out the idle circuit, which can then be covered with epoxy or whatever. That’s way too much trouble to make something kinda sorta work again for a while. The BBS is a direct bolt on swap and is so much easier to work on.
