This proves a point that i make to my students (I teach drawing and storyboarding too) that a great director is a communicator. He will even hand some of his expression to someone else in his talent pool (to an artist, in this example) for the end goal of getting what he imagines on the screen.
it was one of these videos that REALLY set it in stone for me to become a filmmaker, when Speilberg said, "i want every director to be an animator first".....well currently in college for animation :)
He kinda remembers me of young Steve Jobs the way he communicates very complex ideas in a simple way as if they prepared their whole life for the answer
sure he looks a bit nerdy here, but damnit he is as great with words then as he is now.. a great communicator, lots of respect for him, he's one of my personal heroes
Ya you have to determine the character's appearance as the first step. First in your head, and after on paper. And you gonna change some of them and make more detail, untill its all makes sence and are perfect. It's all worth it! Ps. I Wanna Be A Director When I Grow Ups. Steven Spielberg is my role model!
I am just having a conversation with you, that is all. What I meant was, his too big hits, up to the point when the video was made. The first point I made was this, (without calling you any names) sometimes a director can have a vision of what they want to portray onscreen. But, sometimes once it has been filmed, they realise that it doesn't work, so the scene is removed. As we've seen with the new Star wars films. Being able to do anything because of CGI, isn't great.
Spielberg answered the question off-the-cuff as a professional as a young turk --six months storyboarding on thousands of drawings that are just thrown away...
"...CGI lowers those costs...." This is not always true, and It can depend on which effects house you use. ILM would cost a fortune obviously. And if you go somewhere cheaper, the effects may not be convincing. Sometimes it IS cost effective to do things for real, that depends upon the budget. BTW: Speilberg went OVER BUDGET on his two big hits JAWS and CE3K. That's probably why he couldn't afford to do certain things in the movie.
Not really. Just because you are able to create something for a film, doesn't mean that it will work in the film. CE3K Is great as it was made. Speilberg didn't even want to do the Special Edition in 1980.
Anyone else feel like Steven Spielberg has looked the same for the past twenty years? Like if it weren't for his voice you'd almost think this is a different guy. I dunno its just wierd- the transition between this Spielberg and, well, Spielberg just seems nonexistent
Man I would love to see close encounters shot again with modern CGI and high res filming ...if there was ever a film that needs a remake it's Close Encounters
I respectfully disagree. All of the "in camera" special effects that were shot would have lost their warmth and originality filtered through the mechanism of CGI.
That would ruin the movie. You never touch a great film. Just because the effects aren't like they are today doesn't mean there not great. The fact that their out dated makes the movie more magical
his voice will NEVER change!!
Correct!
For all his amazing talent and success hes such a down to earth person . He's so natural. That's what I admire about him
More like down *in* the earth
Jaden LaFrance links are being took down everyday for information not to spread Especially in big platforms RUclips Facebook etc
I'v been into filmmaking my whole life and this guy is my hero. Whenever he starts talking I'm instantly inspired.

I love that steven spielberg sounds like he does now as he did back in 1978
He's my favorite film director because he makes "fairy tales", I'm always gonna be a kid at heart.
it was one of these videos that REALLY set it in stone for me to become a filmmaker, when Speilberg said, "i want every director to be an animator first".....well currently in college for animation :)
How did it go?
He kinda remembers me of young Steve Jobs the way he communicates very complex ideas in a simple way as if they prepared their whole life for the answer
Brilliant filmaker.
Unparalleled in Hollywood, I don't know if he's the best but he's unparalleled.
I can't do storyboarding. I usually find the shot on scene since the visuals come so easy to me, but it does help a lot of people.
There is no better feeling than walking onto a set with boards - knowing exactly what you're about to do.
best director ever
Believe it or not, this is the FIRST time I EVER see Steven shaved......
sure he looks a bit nerdy here, but damnit he is as great with words then as he is now.. a great communicator, lots of respect for him, he's one of my personal heroes
Awesome stuff, Thanks!
oh he is so adorable.
I think I see Michael Bay in the far corner trying to pop a firework
STEVEN SPIELBERG IS SO AWESOME:)
Freddie Mercury attended AFI?
the guy that was asking the question was BORAT lol.
I wondered if he storyboards. Thanks for this

@F1brawfa Thank You for putting Stanley Kubrick up their. He deserved an oscar. Truly a good director. :D
Thisi is the first time ever I saw Spielberg with no beard...
who are all theses guys asking questions?
What did he say about today, at the end?
He was jokingly stating that had he decided to do the "glowing cubes sequence" he would still be shooting today.
He looks so beautiful in this video >:D
the guy who asks the question looks like ben stiller with a schnauzer
Now I know.

@Massemassimo so that explains it!
@MrSkinnynerd03 ...greetings from a fellow animation student.
Is it me, or does young Speilberg sound like a J.J. Abrams whom doesn't stutter?
agreed
Terrible Claw
That's where the similarities end
@mitchqqqqqq AFI Felllows (students)
1, 2, 4 ok I see 7 borats in the audience.
High Five!

Look at those mustaches
@lucciinthesky
lmao
In another AFI video there was an Arnold look-alike too
George Jetson??

the cuboids are now in super 8!
Bearing in mind when this was, these were probably Rubik Cuboids!
He's very attractive to me 🗿
The scene he was describing about the cuboids. Is possible today.
People moan about CGI. Who wouldn't want to see the scene made a reality?
@TomVCunningham lmao! *High 5*
Hmm?
lol!!
Borat 00:13
lol, Steven talks to cartoons
@mitchqqqqqq ;P

It just looks really aged now . When I mean remade I mean exact same movie only high res ..better special effects and done by Speilberg
That would ruin the movie. You never touch a great film. Just because the effects aren't like they are today doesn't mean there not great. The fact that their out dated makes the movie more magical
Nick Bernier
Maybe to you.. not to me ...agree to disagree
Nick Bernier I couldn't agree more!
My top 3 best directors are 1 Kubrick , 2 Polanski , 3 Spilberg , sorry Steven you just make to mutch fairy tales
