Is It SAFE? Traveling along the BUSY Coast of Brazil - [Ep. 74]
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
- We reach the busy coast of Brazil after almost three weeks at sea where we are used to seeing hardly anything for days at a time. Then suddenly we are in the middle of oil fields and large container ships and hopefully no pirates.
The radar alarm goes off, but there doesn't appear to be any ships around. So what's going on?
Kate discusses a technique she uses in the galley to conserve water while Roxy shoes off how comfortable she can get out on sea.
Finally, Curtis spots a large ship with a CPA of less than 1/2 a nautical mile. What we he do to alleviate the situation?
Please enjoy our sailing videos!

Music from Epidemic Sound: www.epidemicso...
From a crotchety old New Englander and an old Garcia fan, you both are very refreshing with a genuine mid-western approach to whatever you tackle, steady as she goes, keep on truckin’ and never give up…
Keep up the good work…
Thanks! Love your RUclips name by the way. We are glad you are enjoying the content and lucky we are able to share it with you.
As a Brazilian I would say; Brazilian coast is amazingly beautiful however, be careful where you stop and where you leave your boat unattended. Remote paradise sites can also be very dangerous. Remember, criminality in Brazil is huge and happens when you less expect or imagine it could! Have a safe trip! Cheers
Thanks for the tips Julio! We know all countries have their problems. Brazil is definitely a large place with lots to explore!
I think it is amazing you all have traveled from one continent to another, crossed the equator and did it all with a smile on your face. Of course, if I lived your lifestyle, I would always have a smile too. The hand signal banter made me laugh. Your editing skills are amazing. Fading in and out a good choice of music makes a great all-around video. Keep having fun and stay safe.
Everything about these is amazing !
Thanks Stubby! Through the challenges we've learned to keep smiling. It's not without it's difficulties but that's how you grow! Glad you are enjoying the editing and appreciating the hard work. 😊🙏 Many thanks and you stay safe as well 👍🏻
That's so sweet Neal thank you!!!
Welcome to Brazil. hope you're having a good time!
Lovely! 🇧🇷
Pretty Fish, Pretty Water, OK?.?. Can't touch the soulful beauty of Sailing.
All of it together is the best 🐟🌊⛵️
buddy!oustanding ~ all the best,
Thanks a lot!
Nicely told story. 👍
Thanks Satguy! That's the goal so we appreciate it 😁
Another very good vidio. 3 weeks and you are looking great even Roxy looks very happy. Stay safe and enjoy
Thanks Brad! The warm weather and clean water helps. We are super proud of Roxy!
Again excellent sailing content. Thanks and be safe.
Appreciate the positive note!
Love your videos! Leaving Hilton Head at the end of the month for Horta, planning to follow your track to Brasil, probably stopping in Cabedelo, JoAo Pessoa, going up the river to the Jacare Marina Village, heard it is a safe place. I am so excited getting to see the southern stars again, particularly the Great Megallanic Cloud.
Magellanic.
how do you read that GE in English?
because his name was Magalhães, so even if changing the name for some friendlier spelling to English speakers, the G sound should remain like in GAlaxy instead of becoming like in aGE
What are you sailing and do you have a Web channel, your passage sounds interesting .
Wow awesome plans Rauf! You definitely have something to look forward to! Keep an eye off the coast of Africa.. we aren't the only ones to hit submerged objects/animals over there. You'll love Brazil and we can't wait to hear more about journey! Let us know if you start a blog also! Don't forget some garlic cheese bread at Peter's cafe in Horta. Hilton Head is a beautiful place to start. Enjoy!
You did a great job on the video. I’m sure you’re ready for landfall. Great rendition of navigating other vessels.
Thanks!
Welcome to the land of good people amazing food and helpful people !Thank you !
So very true! Couldn't agree more 😁🇧🇷
Welcome to Brazil, I hope you have a nice stay in our country. Enjoy it
Obrigada Luis!
Brave stretch to sail. Crossing the Atlantic is quite a feat
Thanks for the comment Trevor. A super experience we will always remember.
Brazil has a coastline of about 7400 km. It can be divided into two parts namely the northern and eastern coast. The northern coast extends from Amapa province in the north to Rio de Grande de Norte in the east. It can be called as the North Atlantic coast.
That's a huge coast!
Yesterday you passed my Beachhouse 😎 Of course I waved 😁
Good footage of negotiating such hazards, particularly at night.
Not a lot of sleep but the end is near!
Santos and Guaruja are the best place for repairs. Another place are the Marina VEROLME in Angra dos Reis. Depends what you need to do! Take care, many will try to rip you off! Always get a few estimations, quotations
Thanks for the tips Mar! We've definitely learned a few things since being in Brazil.
Hard cheese like cheddar lasts a very long time!
Excellent Man!
Thanks Man! Appreciate it!
Autopilot & Wind reading - have you solved it by now? Did you try, at the time, to power off all electronics in the chain of this system? Some software is notorious for its bad memory management and if they used an operating system that I shall not mention then you need to have planned cold reboots at an interval that keeps you happy.
Thanks guys!
Thanks Trev!
@@SailingSweetRuca was surprised that’s the first Ray you have seen, i live in Western Australia, they are everywhere.
I know alot of channels don’t watch each other’s episodes but I actually live where the Cruising kiwis are at the moment by episodes, the next episode will be Penguin Island, that’s where I first told my now wife i “love you” 34 years ago.. she was 15 i was 18 years old.. a bit of my history. But they Rays are very shy, they will eat some bait, if you drop it and leave it to them, just any sudden moves they are gone..
Very cool! Thanks for sharing! We try to watch when we can 😎
Love you content, cograts. Welcome to Brazil. Boia means Buoy and watch out, most of the nets are not marked with AIS signals. And most of the fishing boats belongs to artisanal fishers and have no equipment onboard besides a VHF radio. The best tip is to get as far as 30, 40 even 50 miles off the cost for a safer navigation especially during the nights.
You have the same issue in Central America. In response a common practice is to sail by day (when you can keep a good look out) and simply drift at night.
Thanks for the lovely comment and kind words! Thanks for the advice as well! Definitely good practice!
Thanks for the tips. We practiced this navigating lobster buoys in Maine but could plan our sails for more during the day. On these passages you don't always have that option. Night can be a long time to drift in a current going the wrong direction sometimes!
@@SailingSweetRuca There is no perfect answer. In Central America you can sometimes find the nets 10 or 20 miles offshore but mostly they are off obvious fishing communities.. So much depends on your underwater profile but cats seem to get caught out most frequently mono hulls less so. My wife has lazer sharp eyesight so have managed to mostly avoid them and the one time we got caught we were able to reverse out of trouble. May need to carry a big knife/machete and be prepared to get underwater if necesssry but hope you can avoid that..
Watch for the reefs that run along that coast !
Thanks Jan! We will indeed!
Hope all is well there. Keeping a close eye on you guys. Got some gnarly looking weather all around you but you’re safely in Montevideo. Nice place. I’ve been there…a few years back. Took a ship from Buenos Aires over to Montevideo. Very cool place. Are you guys going to visit Buenos Aires? Miss hanging out with you guys back in St Croix. Stay safe out there. Will be with you in my thoughts.
Wow, hi David!!! Long time no see!!!! How are things? Hope all is well! We hope to visit Buenos Aires on the way. For now just hiding out a bit and catching up on boat work and work work.
@@SailingSweetRuca Doing great. All is well here. Still fishing and diving. Well don’t work too hard. Keep making way. ⛵️
👏👏👏
Fishing nets with AIS tags - the next innovation would be for the nets to have echo signal warnings to prevent whale/dolphin-likes to get entangled. The commercial fishers would care less about these losing their lives, but to them its the economic value of their nets.
Is there a synergy in here?
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice work team 🎉 ✨ 🌊 💨 ⛵️ 🏝 👙 🌞 ✨
Thanks Richard! 🤙🏻
@@SailingSweetRuca. Welcome S/v Sweet Ruca. ✨🌊💨⛵️🏝👙🌞✨
bouys ... boys.... but those are bouys ~ longline fishing
It has been cool to learn more about the different fishing methods.
You guys still doing OK haven't seen any up dates for awhile..I hope alls well..
Heya JOJO! All is good here, still shooting, just haven't had time to edit. Lots of sailing and boat work.
@@SailingSweetRuca good, glad to hear your still in business..you guys are my favorite wayward sailors..stay safe....
👍🎣🌊⛵💯
Thumbs up Vincent!
Missing your updates hope you ok
Hi Jeremy! Glad to hear from you. We are OK :-) Lots of sailing and boat work to catch up on, we are still videoing, just not enough time to edit. More soon!
Did I miss the explanation of damage from the mysterious collision?
Not exactly. We didn't discover the damage until later so we are trying to keep the videos in real time as much as possible, as when we found the damage. Sorry to make you wait! It wasn't fun for us to find later on either...
@@SailingSweetRuca Just wanted to be sure I hadnt passed it up somewhere. Thanks!
Where is everybody 🙏
Heya Bug Bunny! :-) We are still hanging around!
What was the conclusion of the underwater damages?
We didn't discover the damage until well after the collision. We will keep the conclusion in line with the videos as they progress. Unfortunately the videos aren't exactly in real time, so you'll have to wait to find out just like we did! (But also there are real time updates on Patreon if you are so inclined 😊)
I loved this video....(New Sub here). Stay safe.
Thanks Porkchop! Glad you enjoyed and thanks again for coming along!
It's been a while since the last video; does anyone know if they have run into any problems?
Hi Douglas! Thanks for looking out for us. We are safe and sound, just lots of boat work and sailing. Hope all is well for you! Both laptops are fired up right now, so more soon!
*BRAZIL BEST COUNTRY OF WORLD 🤩🇧🇷 IS BEAUTIFUL 🇧🇷🇧🇷*
I agree! Been everywhere and think Brazil is the best.
@@stephenburnage7687 REALLY?, WHERE OF BRAZIL?? 🤩🤩🇧🇷
@@gustavo75285 I love Rio but the Northeast is best
@@stephenburnage7687 *WOW, GO TO THE SOUTH OF BRAZIL TOO, IS BEAUTIFUL AND COLD🥶❄️❄️🇧🇷🤩*
Can't wait to start our Brazil episodes!
Dude I am literally laughing out loud at the made up sign language!! That was amazing.
We had more, I should have left them in!
Is it worthwhile putting a protective cap on the heater exhaust outlet to stop or diminish any water ingress?
Definitely worth it.
Birds - seems you need a super-soaker water gun
So how would you get there if you are leaving Florida, trying to figure out the best route, thanks 😀
Hi Ken, in the conventional routes you really have two options. Upwind via the Thorny Path and W.I. -> Brazil or downwind following the Portugese trade routes Florida-> Bermuda -> Azores -> Brazil. Grab the big old world sailing routes book and start from there.
Why no cameras at the mast top?
We would love to have one of those!
How do dogs fare on a boat? Peeing, pooping, walking and sea sickness??? Hé looks so happy.
All dogs are different and experience boats in a different manner. We've even seen many dogs not make it down a dock for the spaces in the planks freak then out! I'll need to make a dog video to talk about Roxy some day! She loves life on a boat and never gets seasick so that's good!
Are you guys OK. 19.06.22
We are OK! Thanks for asking. :) Videos will resume in a short while. :)
Put a cone shaped hat on the radome to keep birds off.
Interesting idea!
How many gallons of diesel total on your crossing?
We need to get out reciepts and check :-) Good idea to incorporate this into a video!
Have you worked out whether you can cruise the Brazilian coast from North to South? I had heard that the currents require you to start at the southern end.
É possível a qualquer época do ano, sou brasileiro e acompanho canais do RUclips locais, eles sobem e descem o ano todo.
You'll noticed we skipped the north east coast and because of that reason indeed! It's one of the reasons we didn't go straight to Brazil from the Caribbean 😁
The best season to go up is during the winter using the fronts.
updates, please!
Hi Rodrigo! More soon :-)
The drift nets are gillnets, you should interview some of the other interesting boats that inhabit that part of the world, it's not just yachitie ocean
pretty sure they encountered long liners ,
Great idea
Jesus, you didn’t make a single landing in Brazil… Salvador, Porto Seguro, Cabo Frio, Ilha Grande, Paraty, Florianópolis. So many places.
We enjoyed Brazil, and toured some more by motorcycle and car. Impossible to stop everywhere.
It's pronounced "boy ya" (boia) float or buoy.
Thanks for the tip
gotta love the bikini thumbnail... because of you are sailing down the Brazilian coast, you will soon be using winter clothing as you approach São Paulo state and then further South.
Squeezing them in while we can 👍🏻
@@SailingSweetRuca don't know how long until you are around latitude 30 in the Brazilian coast, but it will be sunny with morning temperatures around 2 - 3 celcius on Thursday and Friday in Porto Alegre. On the coast probably a little higher
🥶
Buoy = boia, not that different
No lo es
A veces que no!
How come we never see the woman in the thumbnail? Or is she just clickbait, someone from another sailing channel?
Hired model so we can fund our trip
Get a water pistol to scare away those pesky birds on the radar and save on the voice😎
That's a great idea! 🔫
Drift nets snare fish and other creatures in their webbing. No need to fold them over into a "bucket". These are very BAD devices! Indescriminate destruction of everything.
Appears to be so
Motoring? I thought you were sailors? 😂
I guess not
