I removed the broken spring without removing the deck. Procured a replacement spring and then could find location. This video gave the information I need to find the location. Removed the deck according to the video.

My belt keeps popping off the pulleys when I disengage the clutch, could this be due to this return spring being loose or gone?

My broken spring is the same thickness but longer than this. It is not the deck return spring, the torsion spring, the brake spring or the brake return spring. What spring could it be? (Craftsman L2000)

any videos on how to install the deck brake arm? deck brake linkage? spindle brake bar? it looks like the same exact deck that you're working on now. it's a Craftsman ys4500 917. 276642. somebody gave me a tractor brought all the parts and it looks like you install the one arm by raising the bar up inserted and laying it downwards and the other side goes through the actual brake pad with just one nut on the outside that you tighten all the way down? is there supposed to be another nut on the back side of that to sandwich the arm? how far do you tighten it up? there is not one video that I can find or schematics with directions on how to assemble it and how to adjust it. I can't even figure out if I need these brakes. but I didn't want to tear up something else by not installing them. maybe the arm that I have is bent but you have to tighten the screw all the way up for the inch and a quarter or so threads that are on the bar and it still sits there and flops around. I'm assuming that bar is there so that way the tension is even on both brake pads towards the spindles but I cannot get it to match up with what was given to me. I don't know if there's a piece missing or what. sorry for all the venting but this is getting old
