    Both BODMAS and PEMDAS rules would be better shown this way:
    P.E.(D&M).(A&S).
    So many people just remember that 6 letter acronym they were taught, but forget that both D & M are the same order of operations and should be done together, and similarly both A & S are the same order of operations and should be done together.

    Super simple rewrite to multiplication and addition then solve with PEMA
    2² * 3/8 * 3/2 + 1/5
    4 * 3/8 * 3/2 + 1/5
    36/16 + 1/5
    9/4 + 1/5
    Final answer is 49/20 OR 2 and 9 20ths.

    3/8 times 2^2 divided by 2/3 plus 1/5 2^2 first
    3/8 times 4 divided by 2/3 plus 1/5 now do 3/8 times 4
    12/8 divided by 2/3 plus 1/5 'simplify' 12/8 to make 3/2
    3/2 divided by 2/3 plus 1/5 flip 2/3 and multiply instead
    3/2 times 3/2 plus 1/5 do that multiplication
    9/4 plus1/5 LCD of 4 and 5 is 20
    45/20 plus 4/20 = 49/20 which is one of your choices !

    3/8 x 4 = 3/2 and 3/2 / 2/3 = 3/2 x 3/2 = 9/4

    Huh? 3/8 of 4 is 1.5 since 1/8 of 4 is 0.5. Or you could just say 4/8 which is 1/2, then multiply by 3 which gives you 1.5. Next you divide by 2/3? No, you multiply by 3/2. Obviously. So that is 2.25. Then you add .2 and you get 2.45. I would say it took be about 1/10th of a second to see the answer and frankly I know I'm not a rocket scientist. It worries me that anyone would teach in such a way that you end up with 49/20 (which is, of course, 2.45).

    • @gavindeane3670
      @gavindeane3670 Месяц назад

      49/20 is the answer. What's the problem with that?
      If you find it more natural to convert these numbers to decimals then that's fine. 2.45 is obviously a perfectly acceptable way to express the answer too.
      But there's no basis for assuming everyone else necessarily thinks of the problem that way, and no justification for seeking to force them to do so.
      This question happens to involve fractions that are easy to work with as decimals, but not all fractions are easily converted to decimals. There is obvious value in being able to do calculations like this without converting to decimal.

    I can’t believe you wasted over 20 minutes on this problem, especially since all you did was confuse people. There is no PEMDAS necessary for this problem, the solution has nothing to do with order of operations, other than you add the 1/5 at the end.
    The first thing you must recognize immediately is you invert and multiply giving you 6 after canceling which you multiply by 3/8 which is 18/8 = 9/4, which you then add 1/5, which gives 45/20 + 4/20 after you find the least common denominator which gives the result 49/20.
    Notice I didn’t use PEMDAS, and I didn’t work it left to right!

      BODMAS and PEMDAS are the same - because D and M are same order of operations and you do them all in one step from left to right. Same with A and S, you do those all in one step from left to right, if a subtraction is the leftmost operation at that step you do that subtraction first.

      @@thenetsurferboy Given that I have a BS in Mathematics from MIT, I'm pretty sure I know what I am talking about when it comes to algebra. In general, if all you have is a string of multiplication and division, it doesn't actually matter which you do them in, but there can be cases where you need to resolve things left to right.
      Here's the official definition of BODMAS:
      "What is the BODMAS rule?
      The BODMAS rule follows the order of the BODMAS acronym, i.e. B - Brackets, O - Order of powers or roots, D - Division, M - Multiplication A - Addition, and S - Subtraction. The BODMAS rule states that mathematical expressions with multiple operations need to be solved from left to right in the order of BODMAS. Division and Multiplication are considered as interchangeable and depend on which comes first in the expression, as are Addition and Subtraction."
      Note that last sentence - D and M are interchangeable, and you solve them in the order of which comes first in the expression.

    • @ernesthakey3396
      @ernesthakey3396 Месяц назад

      @@thenetsurferboy here it is restated slightly differently from another source, but same thing D/M are resolved at the same time, left to right:
      "BODMAS meaning
      When presented with a number sentence containing more than one operation (such as 3 + 4 x 2), the operations cannot be completed from left to right, but instead in their order of “importance,” which is what BODMAS stands for.
      BODMAS stands for:
      Brackets
      Orders
      Division/Multiplication
      Addition/Subtraction
      “Orders” means square roots and indices (which you may know as square numbers, powers, or exponents)."

      @ernesthakey3396 Месяц назад +1

      @@thenetsurferboy note that PEMDAS puts multiplication first, while BODMAS puts division first, but both are legitimate - that's because in BOTH cases which one is shown first in the mnemonic doesn't matter because you do both during the same pass, just start at the left end of the expression and proceed through it, doing whichever one comes along.
      Obviously that pass is done after first resolving all sub-expressions in parentheses and then resolving all exponents ie orders.
